Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@lawandgin that sounds like a great approach ☺️ I'm trying to do similar really. We are thinking of putting our house on the market and moving to the countryside, and I've said to my OH that if that's what we end up doing he will have to take charge of it all, as last time I dealt with the estate agents and solicitors etc and it was so stressful 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm up for moving, but only if it doesn't impact my wellbeing ha. It's probably easier said than done but I'll just have to keep out of it all and keep focusing on the healthy eating and general destressing! I guess if your job is stressful it's worth trying to implement ways to counterbalance that, like yoga, more time to relax like a nice hot bath, reading etc :) x

@MintGreenLife yes I think low AMH and high FSH together can indicate menopause, but I'm not sure about high FSH on it's own - possibly the same because the body is having to make more FSH to trigger ovulation? I'm not sure though, it's a minefield and I still have a lot to learn! I think at the moment I'd be better of focusing on reducing the stress in my life (not easy with my job) and generally looking after myself :-) x

MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 18:31

@lawandgin ah I see! I thought FSH had something to do with egg reserve and menopause etc, think high FSH maybe sugguests approaching menopause? To be honest the clinic you're thinking of using sounds like a great start, as probably best to have a go without unnecessary drugs to start with ☺️ X

@TheDaydreamBelievers if it makes you feel any better I'm fairly certain I'm in the same boat! Just for whatever reason I've been getting 'break through bleeds' which can happen when you're not ovulating. I'm not seeing any more than a few temps above the coverline each cycle x

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 28/07/2020 18:11

I know that makes sense - because if I had ovulated i would have then had a period - but it still makes me sad

TheDaydreamBelievers · 28/07/2020 18:10

Thanks @Juno231 - in that case I dont think I have ovulated at all since March. No 3 temps above the line at any time. Typically only one at a time above the line. Only one positive OPK and that only came with one temp above line.

lawandgin · 28/07/2020 18:09

@MintGreenLife an AMH test gives an idea of the egg reserve - it can be used to diagnose menopause, low egg reserve etc and is one of the ways of predicting how many eggs are likely to be collected in an IVF round. If you have normal levels of AMH, you are less likely to need a higher dose of stimulation drugs (which is why it is one of the criteria for my clinic because they use a very stripped back approach to drugs - hence the lower cost) I know I am going to be very nervous getting the results of that test - when I actually have it!

I think you are right though - all we can really do is focus on good health overall and hopefully the rest will follow!

lawandgin · 28/07/2020 18:04

@Juno231 I think it's one of those things that maybe isn't widely accepted - but because it's one of the criteria for the clinic I am looking at, I am too scared to get it tested just now, in case the pill has had an effect (albeit hopefully temporary). I think the articles I read suggested it would go back to 'normal' in no more than six months...

MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 17:27

@Flowerkm it's definitely good to stay as positive as possible :) think remembering that getting super stressed won't help with TTC and having the wedding to focus on have stopped me having a complete freak out. My nipples are sensitive this afternoon, which happened the last two cycles a few days before AF was due. Think this might be my body finally giving up on the idea of ovulation and that I will see AF in the next few days xx

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 17:26

@lawandgin thanks so much, I can hope ha, but it's not looking too positive the way things are going at the moment!

I've actually never heard of AMH. Think best you can do post pill is focus on healthy eating, regular exercise and just generally looking after yourself. Maybe consider a multi bit, or a prenatal, but might be a bit early for the later. I found that book really helpful in terms of understanding what a huge difference egg quality makes and how a few small changes can help. I was already following a lot of a dietary advice because it's much the same as the advice to help your body along post-pill, but good to know a similar approach will help improve egg quality also :) I switched to a prenatal supplement recommended in the book and take ubiquinol daily too x

@Juno231 it's so hard not to get stuck down a rabbit hole isn't it! I swore after last cycle I wouldn't end up obsessing over individual temps and googling endlessly, and yet here I am having probably spent several hours over the last few days looking up things like 'fall back rise' and 'EWCM after ovulation' etc...nightmare. I've made myself feel a bit crap I think.

My nipples are feeling sensitive this afternoon, and that happened my last few cycles a few days before AF arrived. Think I most likely didn't ovulate (again) and this is my body now giving up and getting ready for AF. Not sure when I should start to worry about the fact I'm not ovulating :/ was so hopeful the last few days x

Juno231 · 28/07/2020 15:45

Btw I forgot to say that I looked at my day 21 test results yesterday and all of it has come back in a normal range. Not sure what's affecting my cycles in that case! My prolactin was on the very highest end of normal but that's it.

@lawandgin that's really interesting about AMH! I had mine tested in May/June last year and it came back on the lower end of normal for my age but I was on the pill back then so would be interesting to see if it's different now? Tbh I thought AMH is what it is and that there's no way to improve it.

lawandgin · 28/07/2020 15:25
@lawandgin thanks, I started out so optimistic ha. I've surprised myself in that I'm not feeling entirely deflated or too worried, although it probably seems like I'm worrying a lot! This is certainly my focus at the moment, but I'm still holding out hope that it will sort itself out in the next month or two and that it might just fit in with our postponed wedding...probably wishful thinking ha.

I know, to be honest I think it's awful that it's not explained that you could essentially end up 'infertile' for up to a year after coming off the pill. I even made an appointment to discus it and was told it wouldn't be an issue and I could start ovulating right after stopping, yet here I am almost 4 months later!

Hopefully now you've had AF you will be back on track :) ahh that is unique, but everyone's path to parenthood is different. Do you have any guidelines from the IVF clinic in terms of getting your body ready? I'm sure you've probably already looked into all this, but I would highly recommend 'It Starts With the Egg.' It focuses on how to improve egg quality and looks at things you can do to improve your chances with IVF. I've even implemented some of the advice as figured improving my egg quality can surely only help with my cycles x
@MintGreenLife I fear not... there is almost nothing there today! So frustrating.

I hope the timings do work out for you - and I totally get why you are focusing on this now with your wedding being postponed. I would totally be doing the same thing!

We aren't really signed up with a clinic yet - we do have sperm stored at the London Womens' Clinic, but it's not a great sample (that's another story!) and I wasn't very impressed with them. I want to use ABC IVF but they require you to have a certain level of AMH to be accepted for treatment - so I want to make sure mine is the best it can be before I go for the tests! I don't know how much you can influence AMH - I suspect not a lot, but I have been reading about AMH being artifically depressed just after you come off the pill, so I'd rather wait and get an accurate result! Thanks for the recommendation - the book is already on my list, I haven't quite got to it yet but I will definitely read it!

Juno231 · 28/07/2020 15:14

@Kay00 hm unless you've had other signs like OPKs and/or EWCM your dip could still just be a normal fluctuation! We'll see in the next few days if there's a temp shift Grin

I've done that sad thing this afternoon where I've looked at other women's FF charts - filtering for my age, my months of TTC and specifically for ones that ended in pregnancy lol. Quite a few on there with the same kind 1/2 DPO temps as mine so I feel less disheartened by them. Like I don't have to write this cycle off already you know?

Flowerkm · 28/07/2020 15:03

@MintGreenLife Aw, thank you. Still being realistic though and know that things can change but really trying to think positive while it’s going in the right direction xx

Kay00 · 28/07/2020 14:55

Hi ladies, I hope you are all well?

My 1st cyle was 41 days long, attempted ovulation at day 17 then I managed to ovulate successfuly at day 31, I then had a 10 day luteal phase, I was quite pleased overall... see the attached chart.

I am now in my second cyle. I had a very light period lasting just three days, i'm on CD11 and I think my body is going to attempt to ovulate again (hopefully successfully this time) as I have had a temp drop and I have some LH on a test strip today (I will test again later).

I have to admit that this relatively early ovulation (if this is what it is) has caught me off guard and (as you will see from my chart) my parter and I unprotected sex on CD9 ... Blush and we are not planning to start trying for another month or two!

Oops, lol Grin!

@Flowerkm well you never know ☺️ Glad to hear you're feeling positive about your first proper cycle TTC, it's exiting and is a lovely place to be really x

MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 14:38

@Juno231 ahh I never knew that! I struggle to take them at the same time as I usually get up once or twice in the night to pee. I set an alarm for 5.30 but as I know you need to have been asleep for at least three hours before if I wake up at say 4am I just take it then, as to me that's better than taking it at 5.30 after just an hour and a half sleep, or at 7.30 when my alarm to get up goes as that's quite a long while after the average time I take them. I guess most likely today's and yesterday's would have been lower, whereas all of the high ones I took about the right time or slightly earlier x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 28/07/2020 14:21

@MintGreenLife yeah I meant they might not actually be over the coverline which at least would give you a definitive answer as to whether you've ovulated or not. You can use a bbt temp adjuster to see what it would have been at at your normal time. Btw the up triangle means you've taken temps later than usual and downwards pointing means the opposite.

Flowerkm · 28/07/2020 14:03

@MintGreenLife 5 weeks, eeek! Not long at all now, a change of focus is always good I think 😊

Oh no, well glad it’s not just me, it’s so weird getting used to it all. Yep, she could be here any day now, if by the 3rd I haven’t had anything I will take a test just so I know but I don’t want to give my hopes up, I just can’t see it happening but you never know. I’m quite looking forward to trying properly next month (if my cycle allows me) if we missed it this time round 😊

@Elsie2021 hey, welcome! I’m glad you found this thread as there’s a few of us going through similar experiences after coming off the pill. I’m still new off the pill so I can’t advise on it personally but like @MintGreenLife said it’s good you’ve given yourself plenty of time to settle down. I ovulated on CD13 and I’m due my first AF this weekend and I’m a little worried that after a good start that things might go a bit more haywire so just trying to take it a week at a time.

I use the Femometer strips from Amazon which work with the Femometer app, you can take photos of the OPKs and the app recognises them and works out the % of the test line and how high the LH surge is. There are so many out there so just download them all, have a play and stick with what works for you. I also have the clear blue digital ones but as they’re a tad more pricey I just used them to back up my Femometer OPKs which it did so the cheapy ones are ok. Good luck and please keep us posted 😊 xx

MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 14:02

@Juno231 do you mean in terms of the time I took them and so they might not actually be as low? I've checked and I think I actually took today's and yesterday's temps a little later than the previous few days, so if anything the could have actually been lower 😔 Never mind, will see what happens tomorrow!

OP posts:
Juno231 · 28/07/2020 13:57

@MintGreenLife that's a lot of triangles on your chart! If you temp adjusted the last two, do you think they'd both be below the cover line?

@TheDaydreamBelievers it's kinda rolling average show the separation in pre and post OD temp shift. Tbh your chart doesn't look like there's been you've ovulated yet as it requires three temps in a row over the coverline (or higher than the previous six) :(

@Elsie2021 I'll echo what mintgreenlife said. My only difference is that I use the femometer app instead of premom. Purely cause I prefer the aesthetics!

MintGreenLife · 28/07/2020 13:32

Hi @Elsie2021 ☺️ I can totally relate to feeling that things are back on track and then the disappointment when your cycles are still irregular 😢 My first cycle off the pill was 30 days and now I'm on CD42, so frustrating!!

It's great that you've given yourself plenty of time before you plan to start TTC, wish I had thought to do the same to be honest. I think perhaps it might be worth giving your body one more cycle as then you'll be at the 6 month mark, so a good amount of time to get back on track. Then perhaps give temping a go to start, as that's the only thing that confirms ovulation. Think OPKs are more useful for when you're actually TTC to give you warning to make sure you catch the egg, although could well be worth trying them for a month or two before you TTC to get used to them.

Temping should provide you with what you need to know - if and when you're ovulating, and whether you have a long enough luteal phase.

I have the Femometer thermometer which I got from Amazon for around £10, and I use the Premom and Fertility Friend apps. I manually input my temp into both, and also take photos of my OPKs in the Premom app as it tracks your LH levels on your chart too. Hope that helps xx

@Flowerkm haha we are very alike in that regard! I love a list 😂 Think for now we will just keep at DTD and if things still aren't looking great when we get back from our honeymoon I'll call the GP. It's only 5 weeks until our ceramony now so will focus on that ☺️

Ah bless you! It's so strange having to get used to hormone fluctuations again. I totally had a little cry on Friday when my teeth were hurting and something little just pushed me over the edge. I'm not a crier at all so surprised me that I got that upset 😂 I guess AF could come any time for you now. Do you think you'll test if you get past the 3rd and she hasn't shown? Xx

Elsie2021 · 28/07/2020 13:19

I hope you don’t mind if I join in. I have just sat and read this whole thread after getting quite upset the other night and heading for the internet for answers.

I stopped my pill in February after being on it for 11 years since I was 16. I didn’t start tracking straight away so I don’t know exactly how long it was but it took around two months for my first period, then I had a 28 day cycle and was buzzing! But after that I had 34 day cycle and I’m now on CD36 with no signs of anything yet :( And now I’m worried I’m not ovulating at all.

We don’t plan on actually TTC until January but I want to give myself the best chance when the time comes!

I’m thinking next cycle I might start start temping and doing OPKs to get a better idea what’s going on. But I also don’t want to get hung up too soon and wonder if I should just give myself another few months to settle? In which case, what would you guys recommend to help things settle back naturally? And if I do go for the OPKs what brands and apps would you recommend?

Thank you so much for all your help and advice in advance! It’s nice to have other people going through the same thing. Hopefully we will have some success stories among us soon xx
