Help - BFP but I had my period?!

Last month, I ovulated on day 18 and had my period on day 27. It was as heavy as usual but did feel a bit different because I had some brown bleeding on day 8 after I thought everything had finished. And I have had a lot of light cramping the last three days.

Today is day 11 of my new cycle and what would be day 37 of my old cycle. This morning I did an ovulation test and it had a fairly strong line (I wouldn’t be expecting to ovulate for another week) and so I tried a pregnancy test and got a very faint positive.

With my daughter I didn’t test positive until day 34 of my cycle, so I know things usually happen late for me, but I also didn’t have a period! So now I am confused/worried - how can there be anything in there if I had my period? And how is there any lining in the womb for the egg to bury in?!

Thanks all for your help.

My tests never got darker this past week unfortunately. There’s been a very faint line a few days but so faint it’s really impossible to tell.

Today I’ve had a strong line on my ovulation stick so I assume I’m just having a normal cycle now - but without any EWCM. I’ve been having watery discharge instead (sorry if TMI!)

I’ve felt sick every day for a week, got sore boobs, and bloated, but genuinely wonder if this might all have been psychosomatic now...! So it’s back to trying again and hopefully this will be my month.

Anyway good luck to those of you trying and thank you for your advice. Good luck to @PopcornForDinner with your pregnancy.

I would be day 39.

I just checked my diary and I got a “proper” line - still a bit faint - on day 37 with my daughter. I usually have 28 day-ish cycles but I seem to implant very late, I only have a 9/10 day luteal phase. What is the hook effect, I haven’t heard of that?

If the last bleed was a fluke, how far along would you be? I just thought if there is a possibility that you are far enough along that the 'hook effect' is starting to affect the test?

PeterPipersPepper · 27/05/2020 07:17

Negative on two tests this morning. Very strange as I was throwing up during the test taking. My ovulation test has been the same the last three days - a consistently light/medium line.

I’ll keep doing both tests this week. I guess I need to start trying again as this would usually be my fertile window!

Thank you for sharing that, so good to know. And I hope it is all good news and plain sailing for you from now on.

I’ve been sick twice today so just awaiting my next test in the morning. Fingers crossed for us both.

@PeterPipersPepper Oh, and the GP said to keep an eye on shoulder pain (could be a symptom of ectopic), and the EPU said to call them or go straight to A&E if I start to bleed heavily or develop any pain or strange symptoms before my appointment.

PopcornForDinner · 26/05/2020 19:53

@PeterPipersPepper How are you doing now?

I rang the GP and they gave me a referral to the EPU. My tests are still darkening and I have no pain. They will scan me next week, when I'll be 6.5w along according to my calculations, and we'll go from there.

PeterPipersPepper · 26/05/2020 11:09

Hi @PopcornForDinner gosh what a coincidence. Maybe you wouldn’t mind letting me know what your GP says later? I’m glad your line is strong, that’s hopefully good news for you.

I will definitely do that if I have a line tomorrow. I feel like I can’t call today when it was almost invisible yesterday and is not visible today.

I have just thrown up which could be a coincidence but I was sick from 6 weeks with my daughter. Very hard not to overthink this!!

The same exact thing happened to me! And I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I had a positive opk yesterday (CD9), after only just having finished my period. Thought it was a bit odd and did a pregnancy test and it was positive. I'm totally shocked and confused. Going by my previous period date, it would put me as 5+ weeks pregnant. The lines on FRERs are very strong. I've heard from others who had similar that they were told it might have started off as a twin pregnancy but only one made it. I'm waiting for a call back from my GP. I hope we both get some clarity soon!

kirinm · 26/05/2020 10:32

@peterpiperspepper

I would still give your local EPU a call. Just explain that you had what seemed to be a period and since then have had positive pregnancy tests even if the line was faint. Let them tell you if it is something you should be seen about or whether a wait and see approach is okay.

PeterPipersPepper · 26/05/2020 10:30

Thank you I appreciate your message.

I completely agree we might have too much information nowadays!

I am on the fence today. It took six days for tests with my daughter to get to a point where I thought I was actually pregnant - from a proper squinter my husband couldn’t see to a moderately strong line - so I am going to wait and see over the next few days.

I had "periods" for 2 cycles with my first pregnancy. There are women who reportedly had them throughout and didn't realise they were pregnant! Try not to worry, it's a case of wait and see though if you develop pain etc seek advice immediately of course. Because pregnancy tests people just waited, I do wonder if these early tests cause more worry. Take care and let us know (I for one sit here wondering about people, especially now with so much time to ponder!)

PeterPipersPepper · 26/05/2020 10:18

Hello @kirinm nice of you to message.

On the test this morning I can’t see a line - or maybe the faintest faintest ghost of a line - my husband says he can’t see anything and he could on the one yesterday. I went to the loo in the night without thinking so I don’t know if that could affect things.

I’m going to do another one tomorrow morning.

Hope you are OK 💐

kirinm · 26/05/2020 10:12

How are you today @PeterPipersPepper

PeterPipersPepper · 25/05/2020 15:23

Thank you both I know you are not trying to scare me but I am grateful for the information and to know I need to do get checked ASAP.

I was very lightheaded for three days with my daughters pregnancy but that was a week before I had a positive test.

OP posts:
kirinm · 25/05/2020 15:16

@PeterPipersPepper I didn't intend to scare you, more encourage you not to leave it too long to get things checked out.

You can be light headed with a normal pregnancy too so don't panic.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 15:14

Please try not to worry at this point, but do get yourself checked out tomorrow.

PeterPipersPepper · 25/05/2020 15:08

I feel sick now as I have seen lightheadedness is one of the symptoms of ectopic and I have felt lightheaded for about a week now.

Just have to try not to think about it until I can get some medical advice tomorrow.

Thanks all for your advice and sharing your own experiences.

Thank you for the advice. I will call tomorrow. At least then I’ll have one more test from the morning.

I would hope they would. They did when I had mine but that was a long time ago now. I find EPUs a bit hit and miss as to how helpful they are.

I would push for blood tests. It isn't normal to have a period and then positive tests. However when I had my DD I had regular bleeding starting at 5 weeks until 18w so also possible it's something like that.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 14:39

If you think they will take her seriously @kirinm then yes I would agree to go to EPU.

kirinm · 25/05/2020 14:31

I don't agree about not getting tested. It doesn't matter if they can't see anything on a scan because with an ectopic they can get an understanding of what is going on by reading HCG levels initially at least.

kirinm · 25/05/2020 14:29

I had an ectopic. I had a period and then started getting positives afterwards. I would recommend you contact your local EPU and explain the situation to them. It is much better that they pick up an ectopic early. My experience was that the EPU took your bloods and then you are asked to go back in two days later. They look to see what the increase is. With mine, my HCG levels didn't get much above 300 but they also didn't decrease. And eventually I needed intervention.

Did the bleed seem normal? Usual colour? It could be all totally normal and you've just bled during pregnancy but it would be a good idea to get it checked out - don't leave it until tests start getting darker.
