Conception - first time vs second time

Hi,

First baby we conceived first month and with one attempt at doing the deed!! Clearly luck was in hand that month!!

Second time round we got pregnant at month 3 of TTC but I lost that baby on New Years Day, so we took Jan/Feb/Mar off as cycle was all over the shop!

April 2020 is take 2 for baby No2!

1st time for DC1 and DC2. Nearly 2 years for DC3. 3 and a bit years between DC2 and DC3 so not sure why the huge difference in ttc.

I was 24 when we started TTC DC2. Hardly a geriatric mum and it took over a year.

I think we should be honest with teens. Yes, their fertility is at its peak but that is not a guarantee that they’ll get pregnant just by looking at a condom-free penis. My point is that some of the messages being shared with children are misleading. Preparing people that TTC may take longer than one shag would probably make people understand their bodies more. I certainly understand more about the female body now than I ever learnt at school. I teach sex ed to my class and I am now better able to explain the female reproductive system after TTC.

It’s normal for it to take up to a year to conceive. I think the messages we get told as a child are unhelpful when TTC.

‘Even think about having unprotected sex and you’ll get pregnant!’

For some people, that’s true. For most, it’s not.

It’s more likely to be true for teens and under 25s, though. So it’s a message worth giving them to avoid unwanted pregnancies when very young. However, what should also be explained in school - especially to girls- is that conceiving gets harder as we age (on a population level, of course there are exceptions and outliers and some people have a horribly hard time).

OP DC1 and DC2 were both conceived first cycle (in my twenties) DC3 took almost exactly a year (late thirties). Which probably makes me very average, in terms of fertility declining.

So, age matters, I think and since you’re only 29 months older than last time you conceived, hopefully you’ll be lucky and it will be quick. Good luck.

It took 11 months to conceive DC1. It took literally one try to conceive DC2 It was a bit of a surprise, to say the least, especially as I was still breastfeeding DC1. There's just 16 months between them. It then took about 4 months to conceive DC3, but there is a bigger age gap.

I conceived #1 on the second cycle, and just got a BFP with #2 on the third cycle (although we totally stuffed up the timing on the first cycle so technically it was only two cycles of legitimately trying).

We were first month with our first, now 3.5 yrs. been TTC no 2 for nearly 2 years! Not even a sniff - all tests show no problems. Guess it isn’t our time yet

I conceived the first month with first Daughter.

We started trying for 2nd baby and conceived first month again, but ended in early miscarriage. Took 3 months to get pregnant again, miscarried again. 4 months later conceived again and now have a second Daughter who is 5 weeks old :).

First son conceived by being careless as a teenager, taking pill sporadically.
Two decades on and just had another son; took a year to conceive him but had been on pill for over 20 years and took about 4 months for cycle to regulate after coming off it. Now hoping to conceive again; also just ovulated so we can do the 2 week wait together if you like :-) Sending you baby dust! X

For some people, that’s true. For most, it’s not. There is around a 25% chance of conceiving each month and that’s if there are no fertility issues. There’s a reason why doctors won’t start looking into fertility treatments until at least a year into TTC.

First pregnancy - 2 years
Second pregnancy- 1 month!

Both of my pregnancies have been one hit wonders! Very lucky indeed. I used ovulation sticks both times so was guided which I think helped. Was 34 with first pregnancy and now 36 and 22 weeks

DD1 took 5 months, DD2 was 11 months.

DC1 4 cycles, pregnancy number 2 1 cycle (it was a surprise just after I had finished bf) which very sadly ended in a MMC in December. TTC again and this is the first cycle, our timings seem similar OP. Sending baby dust your way xx

First was first month of trying, second was a year, one ectopic and two miscarriages.

DC1 straight away, DC2 4 cycles.

First time was 2 cycles, second time was 6. First time I just dtd more, second time I ended up using opks, preseed lube and following smep.

I'm very lucky to have conceived no 1 by being careless and no 2 on the second try. No 3 on the first try. If you were quick first time I would expect you to be the second time unless your health has changed in some way. I wouldn't worry though if it takes 6+months I think it's quite usual.

1st baby - 4 years and needed Ivf in the end.

2nd baby - 18 months (natural pregnancy) but sadly ended in MC - now starting to TTC again.

1st baby 5 months, 2nd baby it happened straight away and really surprised us. I had been on a bit of a health kick for the previous six months so I often wonder if that helped but my 3rd baby was a complete and utter shock to us

1st time, ended contraception at the end of January and was pregnant around the beginning of July so 5 months or so

2nd time I was breastfeeding but no periods but once I stopped breastfeeding I became pregnant after 2 cycles.

Very surprised it happened so quick, there will be 18 months between them as second is due in September

With my First DD it took me 7 months! And then with my second DS it was a one hit wonder.

I am now trying for my Third, I'm in month 2
