Hi all,

I'm so excited to start our TTC journey. It really feels we've waited for so long for this time to come. I have been ready for years, the feeling of broodiness is actually overwhelming at times. And now the time is almost here! I have just 7 more pills to take before we can start and couldn't get more excited. Although I am a little worried I have some break through bleeding currently (not uncommon for me) so I have wondered if that may be a problem..

How long after stopping the pill did it take you to conceive? I have terrible anxiety about this (my breakthrough bleeding being a factor in this)..
I am 27 and have been on contraception for 9 years, currently on the combined pill.

Smile

@ChequerBoard I totally understand your point, nobody should really be putting any pressure on the NHS if they can help it. However, I imagine that if it comes around to 9 months later, there may be a much bigger push for home births or birthing centres where possible - as much as we can try to put life on hold, for some, the dream/desire of having a child can't just be paused. Just a thought, though I do see your point very clearly!

firsttimemummy1987 · 24/03/2020 12:47

@Leasha16 I came off the pill last December and started trying/tracking ovulation In February and fell pregnant that month. I had been on the pill for 10 years. I’m 5 weeks today. Smile

And have a read of this, fancy giving birth alone?

Just look at what is happening around you within your local NHS services. Read the Health Service Journal online (free to access Covid related content is free to access during the crisis) to see what's really going on.

Just foolish and actually incredibly selfish to deliberately embark on TTC when you have no idea what the healthcare services available to support you during pregnancy and birth will be like in a few weeks/months time.

Shakes head.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 21:13

@PlomBear Seriously? You can't plan for something you don't know about in the future. You absolutely can and should plan for something which is happening right at this very moment.

PlomBear · 23/03/2020 21:00

Seventyone72seventy3 - a virus or bacterium pandemic could start at any time. Next year? Two years?

I don’t think telling people not to get pregnant is helpful. What next, have an abortion? Are abortion services still running I wonder.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 23/03/2020 19:42

@Leasha16 I didn't want to put you off in any way, but it's just such a stressful time and stress is no good for mum or baby.

I would hate to have been going through all this during the first trimester with the sickness and feeling awful on top of the stress x

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 19:29

@PlomBear I think you have really missed the point. People are saying to wait because 1) we don't have enough information about the effect of the virus on a foetus and 2) this is not the time to be needing medical appointments unless absolutely necessary. Your examples are not really applicable to the current situation at all.

Leasha16 · 23/03/2020 19:13

Thanks for the feedback @LittleBoyJuly that was useful to hear from someone first hand who's experiencing it.

Whilst these times are so scary and unknown, I hear all what you are saying. We have decided to continue to come off the pill as planned, due to the fact that I have been on contraception for so long. We will use other methods of contraception for the time being, but I really want time to be pill free to get this out of my system. Hopefully this calms down by the time my body is ready to conceive and it all works out (there's wishful thinking!).

I'm lucky enough that my job is safe during this time and I'm getting paid so that was never an issue for us. But I agree, there were wartime babies and babies born during all devastations and people coped because that's just what we do. However, a couple of months allowing my body to readjust while using other methods seems sensible for us.

Thanks all for your input.

Thing is, when is a good time to conceive? How many babies are born in war, famine, pestilence, nuclear meltdowns, poverty etc.

You could still lose your job, an asteroid might hit the earth, there might be a new Chernobyl disaster. Or a worldwide depression. Partners of pregnant women die. People get cancer.

Yet the world goes on turning.

@JonHammIsMyJamm

Wow

JonHammIsMyJamm · 23/03/2020 17:52

@claireb707, the OP is in her 20’s. The vast majority of the TTC crew will not be in their 40’s. It isn’t all about you. Quit me-railing.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 17:38

I understand the problem I really do. I still don't think it is the right decision to go ahead. How would you get out to go to check ups? What if pregnancy makes you more vulnerable to the virus? Sometimes you just have to wait. Everyone can wait regardless of their age.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 23/03/2020 17:29

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I would suggest you wait. My GP has closed, haven't heard a thing from my midwife, no partners allowed at scans (luckily I'd already had mine so partner was there) my blood pressure is high because of the stress. I had a nurse burst into tears on front of me.
Going to the hospital is anxiety inducing right now.
Please wait.

claireb707 · 23/03/2020 17:27

When you are ttc over the age of 40 those few months could be a few months too long...

All I'm asking is to be sensitive to those of us that can't wait a few months

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 17:25

@claireb707 It's not a question of making people feel worse. Surely it's worth waiting a few months instead of embarking on a pregnancy which might be affected by the current situation?

ChequerBoard · 23/03/2020 12:11

Is this really a good time to TTC? Surely waiting a few more months is prudent.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2020 12:03

Two months, I was also twenty seven and had been on the pill for a few years.

However it doesn’t matter how long it took others, please don’t do that to yourself, because the answers will range from immediately to never.

claireb707 · 23/03/2020 11:57

@Bridecilla some of us don't have the luxury of being able to wait to see what happens. Those of us over 40 don't have time.

Please don't make those of us in that situation feel worse than we already do

Bridecilla · 23/03/2020 07:29

I'm actually really worried about the amount of people powering on and ttc on the conception board - I have a healthy ds and accepted a long time ago that he would be an only. People are actively encouraging each other 😪

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 07:23

Honestly? This is a terrible time to ttc. Wait a few months.

mocktail · 23/03/2020 07:18

I would also wait. The effects of coronavirus on early pregnancy aren't yet known. And what if a treatment or vaccine is found but can't be used by pregnant women?

Ullupullu · 23/03/2020 07:18

I conceived the second month after coming off the combined pill (you know you can just stop taking them any time, no need to take those last 7?).

My friend is pregnant and she has been told to self isolate her whole family until the baby is born in the summer, owing to health risk. That's over 12 weeks. Even if you are 100% fit and healthy, pregnant women are being advised to basically isolate and it's dead hard for medical staff eg midwives to make appointments now knowing they risk infecting their own families. Sorry to piss on your chips but unless you've got age against you, wait 6 months until TTC.

Ikeameatballs · 23/03/2020 07:18

I got pregnant after 2 months having been on COP for over ten years. Then it took 4 months second time around.

However, no way would I be starting TTC now.

Bridecilla · 23/03/2020 07:15

Give your body this uncertain time to get used to be chemical free but honestly, I'd use contraception.

If you get pregnant now you can't be guaranteed the usual care. Leave the few pregnancy related hcp staff to cope with those already pregnant

You have choice and free will, really you do but I'd hate for you to be here in 3 months - pregnant and upset you can't see a midwife for your booking appointment
