Baby in a one bed flat

Ridethewaves · 28/04/2018 16:24

Hi,
Does anybody have experience of having a baby in a one bed home? We love where we live and have plenty of space (flat is 850 sq foot) just no second bedroom. Ideally we would like to live here until the (hypothetical...) baby is 18months. Any thoughts? Are we being silly trying to conceive now? Thanks for any advice!

I agree @ridethewaves sorry for late reply. If you're like us & really love where you live I just can't justify the move for a bedroom right now! We've be giving up so much just for a bedroom for a 10 month old who really doesn't care! Seems mad?

namechange2222 · 29/04/2018 07:08

My DD rented a two bedroomed flat when my GS was born. He's now almost 5 and his room has never been slept in until very recently. It's perfectly do able and he's a lovely well balanced little boy just felt happier sleeping with his Mum

CindyLouWhoo · 29/04/2018 06:36

I wouldn't but then I had two colicky reflux babies and I needed to be able to sleep somewhere I couldn't hear the screaming! I think it all depends on the baby you get.

Ridethewaves · 29/04/2018 06:15

Yeah, that does sound a good idea with regards to a place for all the stuff mumslife. We had an architect have a look at our flat with regards to creating an extra room, they said for fire risk reasons a bedroom should have two methods of egress, and told us we wouldn't be able to sell it on as a two bedroom place without this. That said I think it's what works for you and your family now that matters more than selling on.

We have a 1 bed & DD is 10 months now. It's be fine, really... we have lots of space to. We're considering splitting our bedroom to make her a room but it wouldn't have a window. But I'm just seeing it as a Space for all her stuff & just to sleep so not sure a window is wholely necessary? Be nice but we love where we live & right now this seems a favourable option. But yeah that won't be happening for months & we've coped fine.

tomhazard · 28/04/2018 21:13

We did it until DD1 was 9 months - it was fine. We got a big wardrobe which we shared with her, and had a cot in our room. When she slept through we would sometimes transfer to a travel Cot in the sitting room when we went to bed as she was a bit of a noisy sleeper !
It was absolutely no drama but I was glad of more space when we got as she was crawling and loved having a bit more room for that

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate your comments. We're new to all this and everywhere you look people talk about preparing a nursery for a newborn which has been giving us doubts over the last few days. Reading your posts has given us the confidence to crack on :) perpetualstudent what you said has totally inspired me, sounds like you have a great attitude to family life!

I can’t see any issue at all.

PerpetualStudent · 28/04/2018 20:38

I've got 2 in a one bed flat! I think it's genius - prompts you to avoid falling into consumerist traps of tonnes of kid stuff, and allows us to live in a good area of a big city with lots of activities and opportunities for the kids on the doorstep.
Baby cosleeps and pre-schooler had his own bed and 'space' cordened off with a chest of drawers in one end of the room, works perfectly!

expatinspain · 28/04/2018 20:31

I lived in a one bed flat with DD until she was 7!! It's totally doable for 18 months.

Bubblegum89 · 28/04/2018 20:28

Back in the day, women would pop out 7,8,9 babies and live in a two bedroom house lol. It’s absolutely doable if you’re happy enough to make some adjustments with space. I currently live in a 2 bed house which I absolutely love and don’t want to move out of anytime soon. I already have a 9 year old daughter so if I was to have a baby, we would have to compromise on space too, my parents had 3 of us in a 3 bed. I wouldn’t let space put you off ttc

Bambamber · 28/04/2018 20:15

Was in a 1 bed flat until DD was a few months old, would have been happy to stay longer if we needed to. My DD is 12 months and still in our bedroom anyway. We used a next2me crib for the first 6 months and now her cot is next to our bed with one side down so she can crawl into our bed for a cuddle and a feed. We find the things that take up the most room are things we don't really need anyway. We found not having a pram saved a lot of room, we use a baby carrier instead, although they don't work for everyone

Ohyesiam · 28/04/2018 20:12

Posted too soon.
We have three bedrooms, but only used one for several years. Would you rather be getting up in the night or turning onto your side to snuggle your baby and feed it.
So much easier in one room.
Best of luck op

Ohyesiam · 28/04/2018 20:09

Buy the cosleeping bible, three in a bed by Deborah Jackson. It will convince you that a one bedroom home is the best.
We co snoept for years, it was great.

Ridethewaves · 28/04/2018 19:07

In theory we could afford to move to somewhere larger now but it would mean moving to a different area. Hence we are keen to save for a couple of years. It's reassuring to hear those of you who have done this and managed fine. I wouldn't want to be selfish regarding location of our home if it would have a detrimental impact on a little one. Appreciating all the advice and tips for small space living :)

I had to live in a one bed ( granny ) flat attached to my parents home with my four year old when my life went massively tits up and it was fine. We were there two years to save money and it was great.

LolitaLempicka · 28/04/2018 17:53

We lived in a one bedroom flat with 2 babies, then moved to a four bed house and still all slept in one room! Totally doable.

pandamonium88 · 28/04/2018 17:53

Im guessing you own- do you earn enough for going back to work after baby is born so you can afford a bigger place with childcare being taken into consideration...?

I would look into how realistic it would be for you to buy a bigger place before you TTC.

pandamonium88 · 28/04/2018 17:51

My friend does and its fine but she does want to move, he's just over 1 now. She lives in London though so its hard.

MoodyTwo · 28/04/2018 17:46

Our LO was in our bedroom (co slept mostly) till a few weeks ago he is now 15 months. And if have done it longer , but my husband was sick of sleeping on the sofa. Look up safe co sleeping and you'll be fine

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/04/2018 16:54

The Argos travel cot did just fine for those 6 months tbh, with a good quality mattress they are just as good to sleep in and do up until about 2 I think. And fold up tiny and easy to move!

Ridethewaves · 28/04/2018 16:52

Thanks Shania, that's a good idea! Seeing that photo of the gorgeous baby just makes me think I don't want to wait until we can afford a bigger place! I've been looking at cots on wheels to see if they fit through doors to give us a bit more flexibility.

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/04/2018 16:49

We had a chair fairly similar to this instead of a high chair so it could fold up really small when not in use and also could be used to put him in when doing chores or whatever during the day. Of you could get one of those chairs that straps to a dining chair if you have a table?

Thanks kirsten that's reassuring :)

Thanks all. I'm wondering if it would be better to plan to move when the baby is about 10months to a year so we have more space once it can walk.
