Hi op. I've had the copper iud 12 months now. I had a few cycles where I was so sure I was pregnant I took tests. I never was but the sore boobs in the op jumped right out at me.
I'm getting my coil out I can't deal with the periods from hell!

Surprised you would say that here, considering the likelihood of OP being pregnant at all was ridiculously small, let alone with an ectopic (which she had no symptoms of). Perhaps you should be less rude when you are not quite on the right page?

Glad the test is -ve. It'd be worth seeing your GP on Monday anyway....after an iud is inserted there is a higher risk in the first few months of expulsion or it embedding on the womb. That can lead to heavy and very painful periods, ESP with clots

Yes, I was thinking of ectopic pregnancy when I suggested calling 111. I didn't want to write my specific concerns on a forum as Peggy seemed frightened enough . I thought I'd let the professionals deal with that.

That said, your dates don't make sense so it's not that likely.

You may be reacting to the copper, it can make people feel quite unwell if the copper balance in your body is too high, have a quick google search and you will see it's not that uncommon.

Surprised at the number of posters not aware of the risk factors, symptoms and severity of ectopic pregnancy

I was 22 when I had mine, and it was 23 years ago, and I still knew as soon as I found out I was pregnant with a coil fitted that it was a possibility. How is it that now, with better education, and google, that women are so unaware

It's not common to have a heavy period and be pregnant at all, let alone with an IUD in.

lashestans ectopic pregnancy is more likely with the coil.

It's highly unlikely that you are pregnant if you
a) have an IUD
b) are having a period

The copper IUD played havoc with my periods for a while - made them very long, painful and heavy.

@MissWilmottsGhost why would it be a good idea?? Nhs24 is for thins which cannot wait until normal GP hours which being pregnant and bleeding would not be if you were not keeping the baby anyway...? They would just send you home to miscarry if you were already miscarrying

Sounds pretty normal for the first periods after a copper coil insertion.

I still get sore breasts and I've had mine a few years.

I would be inclined to take a test to put your mind at rest. I would say it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant.

Actually if a test is positive and you are bleeding heavily, 111 would be a very good idea.

The copper IUD is pretty reliable, unlike a number of other coils which have a much higher failure rate (worth noting as this is not necessarily something that the person fitting them will tell you...). However, not everyone suits an cooper coil as it can make heavy periods worse, or be too big / the wrong shape for some people. It sounds like you are just having a heavy period while your body adapts to the new coil.

Best do a test just to be sure and if it is positive see a GP for a referral as soon as possible.

I got pregnant with a copper coil and it was an ectopic pregnancy. I ended up haemorrhaging and being rushed into hospital at 3am for emergency surgery. Not an experience I would recommend.

I don’t mean to freak you out, but if you think you are pregnant do a test. Don’t assume you can’t be because of the coil.

I had been using the coil for 5 years before the pregnancy and had not had heavy periods while using it like some women do. I don’t recall missing a period either, I only realised I was pregnant because of the nausea and vomiting. I was about 8 weeks by the time I saw my GP and was booked immediately for a surgical termination.

OP, whether you are bleeding or not would not affect the accuracy of a pregnancy test.

It sounds as though it’s unlikely, test to rule it out, but also see your GP about the break through bleeding to rule out some underlying causes.

I would say it’s unlikely as one of the common side effects of coils are heavy bleeding for a while and I would suggest this is what you’re experiencing. However, you should do the test to put your mind at rest.
