What are the chances of having another miscarriage?

I posted a similar thread over on the conception board but didn’t get many replies so trying again here for traffic. I would be really grateful to hear some positive messages about people who went on to have a successful pregnancy after a miscarriage. I had an early loss in August and I am now pregnant again (very early days) and I am struggling to keep positive and stop worrying that it’ll happen again. I know nobody can tell me what will happen - just looking for reassurance and positive messages to keep me going through these agonising first few weeks. Also any tips of things I can do / not to to give the pregnancy the best chance (I am taking folic acid and trying to eat more fruit and veg and stopped drinking / caffeine).

I’ll also have to deal with the problem of not drinking over Xmas as nobody will know, which will be problematic / exhausting. We don’t want to tell our families because they will be so excited and don’t know about our previous loss, and we can’t handle their disappointment as well as our own if something goes wrong. We also don’t want our private life (which we are struggling with) to be gossiped about amongst the family.

I know no one has commented on here for a while am tempted to start another feed of my own. I’m 4 weeks post mc and I haven’t started my period yet, I know it can be late etc etc. But me and the hub have been DTD unprotected since I stopped bleeding. Today I’ve woken up feeling sick, I’m getting the weird abdo feelings I had in early pregnancy, but that’s it. I had a bit of bloating a few days ago and thought I was coming on. I’ve been really irritable recently but I thought that was me post miscarriage emotionally. I’m not getting my hopes up but I just want to know where I am period or pregnancy. We DTD about 1 1/2 weeks after I stopped bleeding. Is it too early to do a test? I don’t want to waste one and work myself up if it doesn’t show anything. Thanks xxx

Hi
I have a 6yr old boy. When he just turned 1, my right fallopian tube ruptured for some unknown reason! Two years later, after the trauma of a terrible delivery and emergency surgery, we decided to try for number 2. I fell pregnant within 5months. I cheerfully went along for my 12 scan only to discover that I had lost my baby. I was devastated as I had no idea anything was wrong. I miscarried naturally 4 weeks later. Since then (end of 2015) we have been trying in a 'if it happens, it happens' kind of way. I have polycystic ovaries so my cycle can be a bit of a mess (though typically every 6wks). At each cycle I would get pregnancy symptoms and a lot of the time I was convinced I was pregnant, only to get the dreaded disappointment of another negative result. I spoke to my doctor in May and was referred for investigation to find out why I had not fallen pregnant again. While waiting for my appt, I discovered at the beginning of July that I was pregnant!! 😊
My last period was May 16th, but as my cycle is typically 6weeks long, I expected to be 8wks pregnant when I went for a scan at the EPU on July 27th. The scan showed it was definitely not 8weeks along, but possibly 6wks. I have another scan booked for next week to check for any change. I however do not have a good feeling about this. My nausea and tiredness greatly eased a week ago. My breasts remain swollen and tender. I did a clear blue digital test tonight and it still showed as 3+ weeks. Long story short 😉 is it possible for my levels to be high enough to read 3+ wks if my baby passed 2+weeks ago?
I am hopeful that perhaps my irregular cycle just means I am earlier on that expected, however deep down i think I know what is to come. Surely even if it was 6wks,they wouldve detected a heart beat at least?

Hi OP I had an early miscarriage in June and am now 22 weeks pregnant.

I spent the first 20 weeks constantly worrying and wondering if it was all ok, which was really tiring and made me feel very low. I convinced myself of the worst all the time with no reason as I was so terrified.

Really try to be positive and if the anxiety takes over it's probably worth having a chat with your midwife as they might be able to help.

I'll admit that even now I constantly keep a look out for movements and panic if I can't feel my baby for a few hours, it is reassuring when they wriggle that it's all ok so hopefully once that starts for you it will be a bit easier.

hopingandprayingthistime · 20/01/2018 08:25

Do any of you wonder: am I still pregnant? It’s so difficult not knowing if everything is alright in there, especially with very few symptoms.

Thanks @rosegeorgia21 and best wishes for your pregnancy. It’s a good way to look at it as there’s nothing we can do to control the outcome except trying to stay positive Flowers

I had a miscarriage in August at 11+3 and found out that the scan :-( I'm now pregnant again 5+3 and I'm so petrified it'll happen again .. I suppose you just have to keep positive and keep the hopes up!! Fingers crossed for you. ❣️

hopingandprayingthistime · 13/01/2018 20:51

Thanks @StargazyDrifter I really hope it’s not harmful. I feel terrible that my own need for reassurance could have caused any damage. A warm bath has helped.

That's great news! I have done a lot of reading up on internal scans and the overwhelming consensus seems to be that they are 100% safe. Easier said than done, but try and put it out of your mind for the rest of the weekend. And then it will most likely have passed. Flowers

hopingandprayingthistime · 13/01/2018 15:23

I had a viability scan at FMC today and all looks good - saw the little baby and a heartbeat! I do feel a lot better having seen that all looks well so far, but have a slight dull tummy ache so am now worrying that I have somehow hurt the baby by having an internal scan! The worrying never ends does it! Thanks for your support Flowers

I know I need to address my anxiety

Speak to your MW - she is likely to have access to a perinatal MH team. Anxiety is a horrible thing to live with, miserable and exhausting. And pointless...
If the MW cannot help, speak to your GP.

Look up 'anxiety management' online, there are lots of resources such as MoodGym, MoodJuice, MoodScope - I could go on.... Grin

Saragossa, so sorry for your loss.
Your GP can certainly do a health check, but there are no specific tests recommended after ONE miscarriage, sorry.
MC are stupidly common - it is estimated up to 1 in 3 early pregnancy actually end. Early testing means that we know v early that we have conceived (sometimes even before a missed period) which makes for more suffering and grieving IME.
1 MC statistically does not reduce your chance of a healthy baby Thanks

Kate8989 · 09/01/2018 19:25

I had a MC last week (I didn’t even know I was PG) thought it was a freakishly heavy period. I cannot believe how much my life has changed in a week. One thing I have learnt DO NOT GOOGLE ANYTHING!!!!!!! You end up with scrappy pieces of information from random sources that make you feel crap.
Deep down I think well I got PG once, wasn’t meant to be this time but it WILL happen and be ok. Remember this world is full of scaremongers, the Internet is full of them. Mumsnet is not like that Smile

OvertheSargassoSea · 09/01/2018 19:08

Ive had 2 mc now after my lovely ds. Feel devasted might ask gp for tests but not sure what to do next. Can gp do tests? X

hopingandprayingthistime · 09/01/2018 09:50

Thanks @PerfectlyDone. I know I need to address my anxiety, I am just not sure how. I wish I could enjoy being pregnant (assuming I am) and not spend every day worrying.

OP posts:
PerfectlyDone · 09/01/2018 07:46

Your dream is your anxiety expressing itself - it means nothing wrt the actual chances of your pregnancy - congratulations on that btw Smile

I had 3 MCs before DS1 'stuck', then DS2, another MC and a further 2 DSs.

Every pregnancy loss is very upsetting, of course, but you do sound anxious.
Address your anxiety now, before you have a baby, because, trust me, looking after a newborn/baby/toddler/child/teenager is absofrickinglutely terrifying Grin.

There is some evidence that reassurance scans are helpful - so go for one if you want. The problem is that no statistic in the world can tell you what you really want to know: will your pregnancy continue? So from that point of view, yes, it is a waiting game.

Wrt train journey/hen weekend: medically speaking, of course you can go. Only you can decide whether you are comfortable going.

It helped me to remind myself that women all over the world are pregnant and have babies under the most gawd-awful circumstances, so my normal activities are nothing compared to war zones and refugee camps Wink.

IME conception/pregnancy etc are a total lottery and it is most helpful to really practice staying in the moment (look at Mindfulness techniques), enjoy the good bits and don't worry about the bad bits until they actually happen Thanks

hopingandprayingthistime · 09/01/2018 07:36

I had an awful and very vivid dream last night that I lost the baby. Has anyone else experienced this and everything still been fine? I hope it’s just my mind acting out it’s worries.

BeingGood I am so sorry for your loss - that must have been really shocking and heartbreaking after going in to the scan with high hopes. Wishing you the very best of luck for TTC again. As many PPs on this thread have shared, just because it happens once doesn’t mean anything. More people (anecdotally) seem to experience a loss on their first pregnancy too, although I don’t believe this stat is recognised “officially”.

Thank you to everyone on this thread for your support. You’re really keeping me going. I have nobody in RL to talk to apart from DH (who is supportive but really doesn’t understand and just tells me not to worry!), so I am very grateful for your replies and hand holding.

I had an early scan at 8 weeks - baby looked like a prawn! But you can see the heartbeat and that's what I needed :) I'm now 21 weeks and all looking ok. A positive story for you x

beingGoodNow · 06/01/2018 18:47

Meant to say my MMC wasn't found until the 12 week scan so I had weeks of symptoms when the pregnancy wasn't progressing so my hopes were sky high. I think I would have found it easier if I had discovered it earlier (although still devastating).

beingGoodNow · 06/01/2018 18:44

This is a very useful thread. I had a MMC in November and had no symptoms that anything was wrong. I am going to try again this month but I'm already worried about how anxious I'll be the next time (fingers crossed) I conceive. For me an early scan would be helpful as I had a a embryonic pregnancy so that would have been discovered at an early scan.

Good luck OP, try and stay positive although I completely understand your anxiety.

hopingandprayingthistime · 06/01/2018 18:25

Thanks Bella. Wow - congratulations on your children and I am so sorry for your losses. A good example of how random it can be. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I had 10 pregnancies
DS
Dd1
Dd2
Mc

Dd3
Dd4

Just random it seems! Mine were all early mc except for the last one which was a MMC at 12 weeks. By far the worst!
Chances are you’ll be totally fine!

Hi @hopingandprayingthistime
Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

I can absolutely sympathise with how you're feeling, it's an incredibly anxious time. I had an early loss but got pregnant again 2 months later. I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant and those first 12 weeks were so hard, especially as I didn't have a huge amount of symptoms. Started to convince myself I was imagining it!

I was so worried something bad would happen again (and those worries have never completely disappeared, if I'm honest...they're just easier to reassure when the baby kicks!).

I had 2 early scans - one at 6wks through NHS as I was experiencing pain and one at 9wks that we paid for. Both were amazing and did reassure me and my DH. I can see the argument for not having an early scan, but it helped me.

I went abroad for a fortnight during the first trimester (6-8wks) and I was very anxious for the first week so didn't end up being the relaxing holiday we'd hoped for. But I was pleased we went in the end. You're the only person who can decide whether you go on the hen party, but it might do you some good to take your mind off it. Like a PP said, maybe check where your nearest hospital is, just for peace of mind. It might be worth confiding in someone who will be there too, not in case anything happens, but just so you have a friendly face if you're feeling anxieties creeping in.

Good luck with the next 30-odd weeks! I hope all goes well Thanks
