How did you tell your OH you were pregnant?

Just out of curiosity & also plain nosey-ness. How did you tell your OH you were expecting & what was their reaction?

My DD’s dad & I weren’t together when I found out I was expecting so I did the whole thing on my own. This time around with DH in the picture I can’t wait to share the news with him when it happens & experience the whole thing with someone.

Forgot to add that for my first, I took a second pregnancy test that said I wasn't pregnant and had bleeding. I thought I'd had a miscarriage. At what turned out to be about 4 months along I felt terrible. Went to the doctor who ran a whole bunch of tests. I'd had bleeding that mimicked my periods so assumed I wasn't pregnant. The last test the doctor did was a pregnancy test and I was indeed pregnant. We assumed it was a second pregnancy but the scan showed a huge baby looking back at us when we were expecting a bean.

Dh always says nothing shocks him as much as finding out I was about 4.5 months along. I felt so rotten I never drank anything alcoholi although I had an insane amount of tea/coffee.

DC1: we waited together and looked together (although I was pretty certain I'd seen the second line as soon as I'd peed!)

DC2: it was our anniversary and I told him I had a present for him and handed him the test I'd taken while he was at work

DC3: threw the test at him 😳 needless to say this pregnancy was the unplanned one! He had the biggest grin on his face though, and any time I have a wobble (she's due in 5 weeks) I remember that smile.

For the first I was a day late and just didn't feel right. It felt like my cervix was swollen. I told my friend who told me I was most probably pregnant so I should take a test before booking an appointment with the doctor.

I'm a cheapskate so got the $1 tests which are horrible. It was a Sunday and DH was flying down to Houston. The first two tests were inconclusive. I dashed to the pharmacy and spent $15 on a digital test. It was positive. I called DH who was walking into the plane so I could tell him and then call family in England before it was too late!

Poor DH was on a four hour flight to Houston digesting that his dear wife is pregnant!!! As soon as he landed he called me back to tell me he loved me and would call after his customer dinner. His customer, who we are now good friends with, got the cigar and whiskey out to celebrate.

Something as life changing as falling pregnant surely you'd want to find out together if at all possible?

Yes, I would if I knew it was going to be positive. Otherwise there's no reason for us both to be disappointed.

physicskate · 08/10/2017 17:42

First time I came out of the bathroom and said,’there’s a line.’ He looked and said not they’re all like that. Chemical.

Second time was his birthday. He’d taken the train to London the night before and I tested in the morning and took the train down later. I stopped and got a baby names book and had an awkward convo with a clerk, asking who I was getting it for yada yada. Have him the book. He went pretty quiet. That was chemical too. We still have the book. Shit reminder...

Don’t think I’d be able to handle another chemical. Ttc 19? Months now... I don’t test with him as I test about 12 dpo and he gets annoyed as he doesn’t want me to find out about more chemicals...

PrimeraVez · 08/10/2017 17:18

Thanks drizzle that's kind of you.

bulldogmum · 08/10/2017 16:45

First time found out just before going to meet all his friends for the first time (only been dating 8 weeks...unplanned!). Was going to wait til evening was over but couldn’t stop shaking so when I got to his handed him to pregnancy test. He was shocked, but v happy! That’s our DD...we are now married!

Second time we were away on hols together and he said wasn’t I late, bought the test together. I wee’d on the stick and we waited together for the result. He was super happy! 23 weeks pregnant now.

The other thing to consider here is that sometimes it's a really bloody long path. When you've been trying for 18 months there's a limit to the number of times you can get someone hopes up.

KoolKoala07 · 08/10/2017 16:38

Said to Dh my back aches either I'm pregnant again or I've been doing too much in the garden. Couple of days later I text him at work and just said 'Dh, I'm pregnant' his reply was have you done a test? Don't know how else he thought I knew.

elQuintoConyo · 08/10/2017 16:37

I had had symptoms 2 weeks before missing my period, so it was no surprise to either of us. I peed on a stick that turned blue (or whatever colour, blue line? I don't remember) immediately and just wandered out of the bathroom holding it in shock, pants still round my ankles Grin

We were ttc but it was a real omfg bloody hell whathavewedone?! moment. DS is nearly 6yo and i still think "omfg i'm a parent? Who thought that was a good idea?"

Luckyyem · 08/10/2017 16:34

1st - was 11dpo and was a bit of a test addict, when I got the positive I didn’t know weather to laugh or cry - we had been TTC but it happened quicker than we’d expected. I sent him a picture of the positive test with hello daddy. DD is now 7

2nd - couldn’t remember when I’d had my last period and so tested together, unfortunately was a chemical pregnancy.

3rd - 4 days after our wedding I realised I hadn’t had a period for a while tested together and was positive. Because of the chemical and wedding madness we only had sex once so were very surprised. Had an early scan because it was the cycle after the chemical pregnancy. DD is now 5

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 08/10/2017 16:28

1st was a surprise, so he was woken up at 1pm from a heavy night out, sleepy and bewildered as to why I was a. Not at work, and b. Inconsolably snotty sobbing in the bedroom doorway 😂

2nd was planned. Left a positive test on the coffee table for him to find when he got in from the pub, and went up to bed.

Far calmer second time round Grin

WatchTheFoxes · 08/10/2017 16:23

AtSea1979 so sorry that happened to you Flowers

Some people don't view it in that way though. Lots of pregnancies are unplanned, even unwanted. It's not an "amazing moment" for lots of women. Anyway, he will find out eventually, what's a few minutes or hours of keeping that news to yourself? Some women really enjoy being the only one who knows. They savour it until they are ready to tell. So many reasons.

GlitteryFluff · 08/10/2017 16:15

DH knew when I was due AF, ovulating etc
We decided on the day to test both times, ie if I haven't come on by X day then we'll test: I would have been say 4 days late at that point, and both times was a Sunday so both off work, so woke up and did it and we waited for result together.
I wouldn't have wanted to tell him over phone or text and not seen his reaction, and then him be at work or vice versa.

Si1ver · 08/10/2017 15:57

I tested at work because it was really bloody unlikely that I was pregnant, but I felt like shit. I sat in the work toilets and said out loud "bloody hell that's positive" then had to check the was no one else in the room with me.

I phoned my husband from the car and asked him if he could step into an empty meeting room. I've never heard him happier Grin I sent him a picture of the test afterwards. He asked me to take another at home when we were together.

redfragglebiker · 08/10/2017 15:48

Got a little cake from a very naice artisan bakery near us. (We don't get cakes from there very often as they're bloody expensive.) Attached a luggage label to the cake reading 'roses are red, violets are blue, now share with your wife cos she's eating for two' He was sat on the bed when I gave it to him and he nearly fell off!!!

ineedamoreadultieradult · 08/10/2017 15:47

I didn't tell him we found out together both times. Unless highly logistically impossible I can't imagine doing the test alone. We were in it together.

Scoleah · 08/10/2017 15:46

First time round I sent a Pic message!

2nd time he was in work and I asked him was he sitting down!
Ecstatic both times round!

DrizzleHair · 08/10/2017 15:45

Loads of luck primera

PrimeraVez · 08/10/2017 15:44

First time I woke him up at 6am shaking with happiness and waving a wee covered stick in his face.

Second time I said ermmm I know this is going to sound crazy, but I'm pretty sure I've just had a positive pregnancy test. Turned out to be a chemical pregnancy.

Third time we were out for dinner for my birthday in a lovely restaurant. He said 'I really love you, you know' and I said 'would you love me even more if I told you I was pregnant?' Ended in a MC at 10 weeks☹️

Fourth time (just two days ago) we were on the beach nice and early, playing in the sea with DS and I said 'I'm pregnant' He responded with 'really? Are you sure?' 🤔

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 08/10/2017 11:58

And congratulations colonel!

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 08/10/2017 11:57

Ahh cross post with drizzle. I actually agree, can't imagine a scenario that I would do it alone. If he was away then I'd wait to test too.

DrizzleHair · 08/10/2017 11:55

colonel I get why you tested solo. Maybe I should take my rant back...?!

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 08/10/2017 11:55

Mine was with me when I took the test. We sat on the landing crossed legged with the test between us waiting for it to say something!

DrizzleHair · 08/10/2017 11:54

I'm not getting to be a dick, and obviously sometimes a woman needs to treat solo then tell the father, but I don't get this in general! Both times (actually all times since there were many negatives) I tested while DP was in the room, then I passed the test to him and he kept it while we did the countdown together then we looked at it together.

Something as life changing as falling pregnant surely you'd want to find out together if at all possible?

I don't mean if eg OH works away long term, but if eg he's on nights for 3 days then I'd wait until the 4th day to test.

Sorry to be a downer about the topic, I've just always wondered why women test on their own if there isn't a reason they 'have to'. I guess I always wanted DP next to me so if it wasn't the news we wanted we could commiserate together, or if it was good news celebrate together
