I love all the myths & old wives tales of this sort of thing. It lightens what can feel like the most depressing moments of TTC. Takes your mind off the scientific stuff.

Two schools of thought, actually, which say completely opposite things. Funny that.

A shift in the birthrate during times of famine has not actually been conclusively observed; evidence is contradictory and the shifts we're talking about are only significant on the population level anyway. So all you have to do if you really want a girl is half-starve yourself and make sure you're deficient in several major nutrients, and then you might have as much as a 2% higher chance of having a girl. :)

*In France in the 18th century it was thought that each testicle contained gender-specific sperm: so girls came from the left and boys came from the right. Men who wanted a boy were encouraged to tie off their left testicle during intercourse – or even to remove it.

*Girls are more likely to be conceived in the afternoon and on an even day of the month, while boys are more likely at night and on odd days.

*Female orgasms during sex are more likely to produce a boy, as the body produces alkaline chemicals after an orgasm, which are less likely to finish off the less hardy male sperm, which can then go on to beat the female sperm in the race to the egg.

*Men who drink coffee before they have sex are more likely to have a son, as the coffee perks up the male sperm but not the female.

*As mothers get older, they are more likely to have a boy.

*If you want a girl, sleep with a wooden spoon under your bed and a pink ribbon under your pillow.

*For a boy, only eat the ends of loaves of bread; for a girl, eat only the middles.

I think things like that are harmless fun and don't know why people are so cynical... I love when people told me funny old wives tales when I was pregnant and I was guilty of trying some e.g. The ring on a string which actually was true and I tried numerous times and always same answer... I craved chips and gravy with my son and it's meant to be savoury for boys and sweet for girls so that was true... I carried at the front and that is meant for a boy and that was true so does it all matter it's just fun. People need to be a bit more light hearted... sorry about your aunt OP hope she is better soon x

I imagine it worked for about 50% if the people that tried it.

You can do it, but if anyone is so desperate for a girl they'd have a vinegar douche, you're welcome to it.

You do it by making the conditions for conception more favourable to male/female sperm, but the balance is so precarious you could risk your chances of conceiving at all.

Food is unlikely to do it. It's more timing of intercourse and the aforementioned vinegar douche.

Both of these things make it more difficult to conceive overall.

I also have to agree that gender selection is detrimental to society (probably not in your case, but certainly in general).

It's a fact that more girls are born in times of famine
So if you follow a certain diet then you can increase your chance of girl
Apparently increases the odds to 70/75%
My friend did it after 3 boys and swears by it
No one will ever know for certain if it works or not!

There's a website called ingender where there's lots of discussion about this kind of thing and recommended diets for conceiving a particular sex. It's based on the theory that male and female sperm and embryos prefer different environments so are more likely to implant and grow successfully. No idea if there's anything in it at all.

If I knew of fun ways to guess the sex I would but I'd take it with a massive pinch of salt. It's just for a laugh. I don't mind what I have. Do you particularly want a girl or boy op?

I agree that the obsession with determining the sex of a baby is not harmless. Look what that attitudes is doing in certain parts of the world.

I have absolutely no compunction judging people who believe demonstrably false claptrap. We have a great and free at the point of use education system in this country. Presumably your aunt truanted during biology GCSE?

Personally, I think accepting things that are self-evidently impossible makes your brain go all soft, and I don't apologise for that. A hell of a lot of harm gets done by credulity and unwillingness to apply a teaspoon of critical thinking.

Think about if this was actually true. Diets vary massively across the world by culture and environment, so you'd find places, countries, whole cultures where one sex would start to predominate. That would be DISASTROUS. That shit starts wars. Instead you invariably find the rate at birth is 50:50 (unless sex-selective abortion's been at work).

The answer to your thread title is no. It hasn't worked for anyone because that is not how sex is decided.

To be fair though, if she believes food determines sex (when a quick think or even google will tell you otherwise) then she can't be the sharpest tool in the box.
