Still struggling to conceive no. 2 after getting pregnant easily first time round

So, on the back of a run of rather fantastic success stories, it's time to start another thread for those of us still driving ourselves a bit nuts trying to work out why number 2 seems to be so elusive. New frustrated, obsessive testers always welcome (as are our lovely graduates) and let's hope this thread turns out as many success stories as the last.

Hi metal! So glad things are going so well for you and hope these last months are plain sailing too. Hi to all the new people too. Sorry not to be around much these days - I'm finding mumsnet rather annoying without the app!! But I thought I'd come and update after my appointment at the posh private clinic today. Long story short, taking all the latest tests into account (progesterone, thyroid function and another sperm count for dh), it looks like we've got sperm problems, and some sub-optimal results on my side, plus my ancient age. All together there's nothing to stop us getting pregnant naturally but it's not guaranteed. The consultant didn't recommend anything else to test - its basically a straight choice to do ivf asap or to just keep trying. And I think we're going to do ivf. Despite the fact we'd need to do icsi for the dodgy sperm and pre implantation screening for chromosomal issues (my previous history plus age), which pushes the cost up to just shy of 10k.

Hi Mousey, it's a nightmare knowing what's best to do. I'm South Yorkshire, where are you? I will certainly look at hfea thanks. The lady I spoke to said they are experts in ivf, but for me I would rather exhaust other options first. Not sure if I'd be a case for something like clomid ( or may have been over googling!)

I asked if they would use gp tests and she said theirs are more in depth. I have everything crossed gp will be helpful for me, buts know it's a lottery.

Hi waitandwine I was wondering same thing. So far I've looked at a few clinics online. Some have open days but I'm not really sure what I need (just that I want sthg to happen ASAP). I've booked a private consultation which is same price as yours. It asked for various tests to have been done first (which I found odd but I know nothing!) and went to my GP on Monday and managed to convince her to do the tests for me to enable me to go private. (I still don't fit local pct criteria for NHS referral). Then the private place will analyse the results and do a scsn if nec of uterus, tubes etc. Another website is the hfea who publish the success rates of clinics. What area are you in?

Nice to hear the update Metal, nice to hear positive outcomes.

AF has rocked up today which is cd26, so the peak reading on cd17 makes my LP out. I have decided enough is enough ( as trying 14 months with a mc in Dec) so booked my docs appoint for Next Tuesday to try and get some help.

I also called a private clinic ( Care fertility ) spoke to a very nice lady who said initial consultations are 450. I don't know where to start with specialists, does anyone else have any advice on what to consider? TIA

Hi all, just popping my head back in to see how you're getting on (I'm an old-time graduate here for those who don't remember me). Sorry to see there haven't been any more BFPs recently.

village when I was scheduled to have a hycosy they told me to ring on the first day of AF as they usually only carry it out before CD10 to avoid any chance of you being pregnant.

I'm now into the third trimester (hooray!) and have another growth scan next week. DH and I are still struggling to find a name we both like, though we might have had a breakthrough yesterday...

Banana get yourself some myo- inositol it made my AF turn up after waiting weeks for it and I have Ovd for the first time in 6 months since taking it for three weeks or so?

af got me, am mixed with disappointed and feeling like it was inevitable after temping and it looking like i ov'd on cd23... I think I'll knock the b-vits on the head this cycle and go au-naturel, just poas and temp. That's all. Not obsessively (ahem)

Like Flymo I am only in cycle 4 so not sure if I qualify as struggling yet but here I am...hoping I can join?

My cycle length has increased from 30-33 days pre-baby (he is 14 months) to 35-36 days post-baby.

I've been OPKing but not been able to identify an LH surge at all yet.

CM all over the place
No idea what is/isn't going on

Fruitbat What tests did they do on you? In a way it's more frustrating that nothing is wrong, because at least if it was it could be fixed. Being in limbo like this is awful. I'm awaiting my results, due to get them the first week in October. AF is definitely making an appearance today or tomorrow. I have all the usual symptoms. 13 months of trying for me now.

Hi. Can I join please? Been TTC no2 for a year now (but not in the way a GP can tick a box to help us). Had a mc at 19 weeks due to chromosomal abnormalities in Jan. Broke my heart but have managed to pretend it's all ok in front of no1 who is now 2.5 and asks every day for a baby. Ho hum, carry on regardless etc. So, now at 7 months of ttc no2 and fed up being fobbed off by GP as am 38 and hubby 39. Going into battle with GP on Monday - any ideas what to ask for? If it all goes tits up, we're going private, but I don't even know where to start with that. All ideas gratefully received!

Oh, and my sister has 'unexplained fertility' but had IUI and got pg 2nd round. But because I already have a child...you know the GP drill....

fruitbat that's stupid that referral criteria are the same, hopefully GP is wrong and you can get seen! Although good in a way I suppose that everything is normal. Apologies if this has been asked before but any chance of going private?!

Well I'm 4 weeks and a day out from ERPC and still awaiting AF, I thought I'd ovulated a couple of weeks ago and got all excited but several million negative pg tests this week have un-excited me again. I've been spotting since Tuesday and having wicked cramps but no actual proper AF yet so just waiting and waiting. We're off on holiday for a week tomorrow so doubtless she'll arrive in full force then. Will be good to get away though, need a bit of R&R time with the family. Also using it as a good time to kick the fags that have been getting a bit too regular since the mc! Need to get back to prime incubation standards!

So got all the results back from GP all normal, DH sperm count normal - he thinks we are not eligible for referral to NHS fertility clinic at all as have child and that referal criteria are same as IVF - I asked him to check as he was not sure.

All together a rather depressing Friday evening, and need to get it together to shag tonight too as ff unclear if I have ovulated yet.
Ho hum roll on the weekend

hello, have been lurking for a bit, feel like a fraud as am only on cycle 4 of ttc #2, but felt I should 'fess up about being a voyeur! extra aggravated as really hate my job so feel like I need it to happen sooner than that.... which obviously is delaying things! hope it's ok to jump aboard xxxx

Hi everyone, feel a bit better now i've had time to digest things.

Brindler how are things? Well, this hycosy procedure says something about putting dye into your tubes to check for blockages, but it can be done any time in your cycle, besides period, so they told me I must use contraception as they cannot do it if i'm pregnant as it could abort the pregnancy.

So, I was thinking i'll phone the hospital around a week before i'm due to ovulate, and ask can anyone give me an answer as to whether i'm getting a hycosy as I refuse to use contraception if I definitely don't need one. That will be around 14 days after I had my preliminary tests, so surely they'll have my results by then?

Can't believe she made my follow up for 6 weeks, when she had the option to bring me in at 3,4 or 5 weeks Angry

Hi ladies hope you don't mind me jumping back on, I miss this thread so much! Village I saw your post about the hycosy - I had a lap and dye and also a hysteroscopy, not sure if these are similar/the same things? Nothing was mentioned about not ttc beforehand or time of the month it would take place. As it happens it was a couple of days before af was due to start. Although I had no blockages the procedure obviously triggered something as I conceived 2 months after having it done. So take whatever procedures you can! Everything is worth a try!

Quick update from me after 5 days of flashing smilies, I finally got the static one. But would you believe it on the same day DH started with a very unpleasant stomach bug. So fate decided to cancel it out!! Did DTD on day 4 of flashing smilies so you never know for an outside chance!

Feeling more positive that the static smiley arrived so defo going to order them again for next month. Already working out what days to ban DH from working away????

Village, that place sounds very harsh, I bet it's just to cover themselves, we live in a society now where everything can get over cautious to the extreme.

Village- that nurse sounds like a nightmare! So I had an hsg, which is still an x-ray but I think slightly different, but they deliberately only do it in the first 10 days of your cycle so you can't be pregnan. So bollocks to that nurse. Why would you want to use contraception? "Worst" case scenario is that you get pregnant, which is kind of the aim anyway and then you wouldn't need the hycosy! Don't listen - that's nonsense. I don't know much about clomid either but I hadn't heard anything about it being linked to cycle length.That you should be able to find out more about at your follow up. Sorry you were feeling so down. I'm back to a bit more normal again but still feeling like it really is a lost cause, which is a new one for me. Hopefully something useful will come back from the next couple of weeks of tests and appointments.

neverland I have no idea at what point in the cycle I would have it done, they didn't say, despite me asking repeatedly. The nurse was just adamant that I must use a barrier method for the whole of September, even though there's no guarantee i'll definitely need it! Trying to get an answer as to when i'll find out if I need one was like trying to get blood from a stone Angry

Bishbosh To be honest I don't know the first thing about clomid, I tried to ask questions but was told "You'll find out more at your follow up in 6 weeks time" The only thing she said was that it would increase the risk of twins. I just wasn't sure if clomid was essential with a cycle that is on average 33 days?

Probably not, DH working till 8 tonight plus early rising toddler probably means no chance but I might try and persuade him anyway. Yes using cheapie Ov sticks but they are not even vaguely + but yes I suppose we should dtd anyway and not wait for a pos test!

bish what ov tests are you using? I never got a positive ov test with my DD! I was near enough 100% sure which day I ovulated and never had a +ve beforehand. And here she is 3 years later! I was using eBay cheapies though so that might be why Confused but EWCM is a good sign! Hopefully you ov on time!
