Short Luteal Phase

mascaraisamust · 05/07/2015 22:57

So after 6 months of ttc I've worked out I've got a short luteal phase of 9 days, however it could be even less. I get a positive opk on day 19 and 9 days later AF appears. I'm fearing it could be less that 9 days if I ovulate 24-36 hours after a postive opk. No suprises that there hasn't been a bfp yet. I'm thinking this is my obstacle. Seems I've tried everything else. Do I go to my GP? Is there any point? On preconception vitamins with b6 in and have been in them for three months and no changes. Also AF is really painful every month, wondering if there is more to this. Any ideas? Or anyone experienced/ing similar?

My FF app has updated this morning to show me at 4dpo, I'm not sure how as I missed a temp at the weekend, but that would make us the same Sunshine, although I'm not sure I'm convinced it's accurate for me as was still getting positive OPKs and ovulation pains. Anyway this morning I got a temp dip below the coverline, have googled and apparently its a second estrogen surge, I've never had this before. Please go back up tomorrow. x

Good luck Mascara! Let us know what they say. I know what you mean about everyone having babies. Most of my friends have babies or are pregnant - one friend is almost a week overdue on her littleun so I'm surrounded and apart from one friend all tell me their pregnancies were a 'suprise'!

Sunshine you're not far behind me I'm 3DPO!

*advice rather!

Thanks Mrs and Sunshine, I'm sligjtly anxious about being laughed out the place as I don't feel like I have a 'real' problem but for £200 I'm sure they can offer me some advise!

Sunshine I feel excited too, not sure why!

Fingers crossed for your appointment tomorrow mascara, can't wait to hear an update!

sunshinegirl12 · 06/10/2015 20:48

Goodluck for tomorrow Mascara.

Kitty, I think you should definitely stretch the truth if you can, given the circumstances I'd like to think they will be more willing to help you sooner.

I think I'm 1dpo so have started tucking into the pineapple core. I've been the opposite this month and been really careful with eating, drinking etc which I haven't really been the last few months. But I stupidly feel excited again like I did in the first few months when I was convinced it was going to happen straight away, I'm sure I'm setting myself up for disappointment, I should know better by now. Xx

Sanch1 · 06/10/2015 20:45

I was 31, nearly 32, when I had DD. Am 34 next month.

mascaraisamust · 06/10/2015 20:35

Appointment tomorrow, I hope this will be money well spent!! Grin

How old were you all when you had your first DC? Most friends have had kids. So I feel likely im playing catch up! Ttc #1 is hard enough, nevermind #2!

Kitty I'm sure no one is offended! Sounds like you've had a difficult time lately. Sorry I can't offer much advise!

Sunshine its cd6 for me Hmm Ive been exactly the same as you, eating and drinking what I want and I still am. I don't think the stress of stressing about all that helps! I've had scallops, prawns, medium lamb, mussels, you name it! I've gone from being super paranoid to being the complete opposite.

Sorry mrsmugoo. I obviously didn't make it clear. I've been told by fetal medicine specialists that because I have had a dd with a trisomy that my risk does rocket (1:8000 for the normal population, I'm now at 1:1000 for any subsequent pregnancy, at 35 that increases to 1% so 1:100) I know it won't change between 34 and 364 days and 35 but basically every year I get older the chances of me having a baby with a leathal chromosomal issue increases above the 'normal' population baseline iyswim.

It's only because of my history that I'm worried about 35. I didn't mean to offend or imply that 35 is 'old'

mrsmugoo · 06/10/2015 17:07

I totally get it about the age gap sanch. I didn't want more than 3 years either.

KittyandTeal · 06/10/2015 16:38

Thanks all. I may well stretch the truth. They will know that it's not been a year as we only lost our dd2 in Jan.

I'm hoping that being at a much higher risk of a pregnancy with a trisomy they might do something, or at least shorten the time (and tell me to come back maybe after Christmas or something) before they'll do anything.

I've booked in with a female gp who has an interest in mental health (of which I have many issues) and obs and gyne so hopefully she'll at least be a bit more clued up.

We really can't afford private. We need to save our money in case I do get pregnant as I will need at least £500 for private tests in the first trimester (that's are unavailable on the nhs at all)

I will definitely be telling her that this time next year is my cut off. I will be getting sterilised after that as I cannot risk going through what I've already been through a second time so it's a bit 'now or never'

I guess I stretch the truth and hope for the best. I also need to discuss heavy periods, abdominal pain throughout my cycle and spotting during my LP as well so I guess it's just fingers crossed.

Sanch1 · 06/10/2015 15:49

Oh I know that, but I dont want it to drift until I'm 40 for example, so I feel I need a cut off. I also dont want a 5+ year age gap with DD. She'll be nearly 3 even if I conceived this month (unlikely) and it worries me.

mrsmugoo · 06/10/2015 15:29

By the way, I'm 35. The risk doesn't magically go through the ceiling the morning of your 35th birthday!

mrsmugoo · 06/10/2015 15:28

I was recommended by a friend but it's at the main private hospital where I live.

I got charged a fee for the consultation, a fee for the ultrasound and obviously a private prescription for 2 months worth of cyclogest pessaries.

I haven't actually had any other treatments but yes I think you get charged individually for bloods etc...

Sanch1 · 06/10/2015 14:54

Kitty, I'm also 34 next month and feel exactly the same as you in terms of increased risk. I really dont want to concieve once I'm 35, and dont know what happens if it takes that long :-(

Sanch1 · 06/10/2015 14:53

I'd lie. I wish I lied when I first saw by GP about non- return of periods after the pill. Now he knows how long we've been trying and I can't get around that now.

Mrs, how did you go about finding a private specialist and what was the cost? Do they charge you on top for tests etc

mrsmugoo · 06/10/2015 14:43

Kitty - that is exactly what they will tell you! Either lie about how long you've been trying or lie about your LP (tell them it's even shorter) or do what I did and go private. It's honestly the best money I've ever spent.

KittyandTeal · 06/10/2015 14:30

Hi all. I hope you don't mind me asking some more questions, you were so helpful last time.

I seem to be on the boarderline of slp. My LP is around 10 days although I generally spot for a day or two before af arrives (does that mean my progesterone has dropped already) last months LP was 8 days before a temp dip on day 9 and af turned up later that day.

I have a gp appointment tmrw. We've only been trying for 6 cycles but I am on a time limit. My last pregnancy we lost dd2 at 22 weeks to a chromosomal abnormality. We have been told it was chance and bad luck which I understand, however, my risk of it happening again has gone up and rockets once I get to 35. I am 34 in a month.

I feel like if there is an issue with my cycle I need to get it looked into and sorted fairly soon to give us a chance of getting pregnant before I'm 35 (this is my deadline, after this I cannot risk it, it would be a 1:100 chance of a trisomy)

My question, after that long winded post, is what do I say to the doc to get my point across? I am fully expecting to be shooed off and told there is no problem with a 10 day LP and to come back once I've been trying for a year.

mrsmugoo · 06/10/2015 12:08

Fingers crossed for you sunshine

Yep everything going fine so far, no symptoms to speak of but time is going sooooooo slooooooowly.

I think I will be getting an early scan as my doctor at the clinic apparently recommends them for all his patients. Makes sense given that I'm on progesterone.

I'll be a lot happier once I've had that and seen its all real. Still half feel like I'm making it all up!

Sanch1 · 06/10/2015 12:07

Mrs, I was just wondering, given you already have one child, what your experience was TTC the first time? How long it took? Same issues as now?

I just cant believe I could have DTD once the first month of TTC and get a BFP last time, to be having such weird stuff going on now!

Sunshinegirl2015 · 06/10/2015 11:05

Mrs hope the pregnancy is going well so far!

mascara where are you in your cycle?

I'm on day 3 of my luteal phase. Didn't try the baking soda thing in the end as had a temp shift.

Took a very relaxed approached this month, ate what I wanted and drank coffee everyday (I do love coffee and have been treating myself to one only on the weekend), didn't opk but I didn't notice any CM either. I was waiting to see some either in undies or on tissue.

Ovulated on day 18 again like last month (before taking EPO I always ovulated on day 20) so will be interesting to see what LP is this month (so far it's been 9 then 10 and last month 11 days!).

Really want BFP this month (well I want it every month) but next month DH is abroad for work the week I'm due to ovulate so next month we won't be in with a chance :(

mascaraisamust · 05/10/2015 21:54

Thanks Mrs, that's helpful. It'll be interesting to compare the two experiences and this is the first appointment DH will be with me.

I'm back on my 'health kick' (trying not to call it a diet). Cut out drink as it's the tww anyway so that's one thing. I'm a size 12 currently, I used to be a 8/10. Since I've been off the pill it's piled on Hmm

I don't eat badly generally, I've just had lots of birthday treats with going out for meals and such - I ate out all 5/7 last week Blush at least the kitchen was clean

mrsmugoo · 05/10/2015 20:52

What I said was

  • I wasn't there because of length of time not conceiving as 8 months is well within normal bracket of time to not conceive
  • however I had carefully tracked my cycles and with opk, temping and CM data I was confident I was detecting ovulation correctly but getting my period a week to 8 days later consistently for 9 cycles
  • I was aware that a short luteal phase did not mean pregnancy necessarily impossible but that it would seriously hamper my chances and with my age (I'm 35) I wanted to do anything in my power to remove any obstacles.
-I didn't want to just roll with it and leave it to chance as I have another child and the age gap is factor for me.

He 100% on board with me from the get-go and the only thing he did say to me was that I should stop 5:2 dieting (which I had anyway) as that was not going to help me.

I really hope my 5:2 dieting wasn't the underlying cause of my LPD but the month I got my BFP I had been super relaxed (but healthy) with my eating and I ovulated on day 15 which is very early for me! So I could have gone on to have a natural 12 day luteal phase? We'll never know ( hopefully)

I'm not going to diss the 5:2 diet though, I lost 28lb on it and went from a 12 to an 8 and to my pre- pregnancy size. I always said I would reach pre-preg weight before getting preg again!
