Get sheets for the cot and a sleeping bag/gro bag - baby bed done Grin

a lot of travel systems come with a car seat but make sure it fits in your car!

you don't NEED a moses basket but they are handy as baby can go to sleep in lounge the you can just carry the basket upstairs (we had two stands). morrisons have loads of lovely baby bits, 3 pack hooded towels for £6 and bottles/sterilisers etc too and asda do a great baby event too.

I got a card for that too. Ohhh does anyone know much about them? the maternity exemption cards last for a year after the baby is born.

Dd was born in feb so my card expires in feb, should I expect a new one now or in feb leading on from when dd's expires? Confused!

poppet85 · 19/08/2014 20:22

Siarie it means you get free dentist & optician appointments !! Dying to go to the dentist but holding out !

Siarie · 19/08/2014 19:56

DH is self employed and I think there are caps on income for it? I help out but I'm not employed, but even then I think the cap is the issue.

Never mind though, it's there to help people who work so it doesn't feel like I'm missing out or anything :)

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 19:47

If your DH/DP works they use it too for paternity leave Smile

Think it's 8'weeks til I go on mat leave GrinGrinGrin can't wait!!

Siarie · 19/08/2014 19:41

Oh right, I won't get any mat leave so I guess I won't need that. An important piece of paper though! :D

LuluJakey1 · 19/08/2014 19:27

Cupcake I have talked to a couple of friends on the. phone and one of them has a Quinny travel system and loves it. The other one had a Britfix(?) and said it was awful to keep clean.

They think we will need the carry cot/pram bit with it being winter.

There is a pram centre apparently which is really good so we will go and have a look. Then we can try them out- apparently heights vary and DH is 6ft 1 so it needs to be tall enough for him. I see him pushing it for miles in the winter along to sea front and me snoozing at home Grin

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 19:26

A matb1, you need it to finalise maternity leave Grin

Siarie · 19/08/2014 19:19

What maternity certificate thing is this?

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 18:57

20 weeks I think poppet Smile

poppet85 · 19/08/2014 18:48

Oh god havnt got anything !! When do you get your maternity certificate thing ?! I know anything ! I've had my 16 week appointment today and got my 20 week scan but probably wont see the midwife then. I then have a dr appointment at 24 weeks with the gp so dont see midwife again until 27/28 ?!

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 18:45

Mine wasn't too expensive and I love it Smile

Wouldn't swap it for a fancy one

Cupcake92 · 19/08/2014 18:36

U sound very organised lulu :)
Baby things are very expensive and it's surprising how much stuff u actually really need.
U need a pram that says u can use it from birth. Travel systems are handy as the car seat just clips onto the pram :)

LuluJakey1 · 19/08/2014 18:05

Do they need a 'travel system' or just a buggy? Is the pram thing really necessary?

John Lewis has some pretty bedding in the sale at the moment.

Do they need a moses basket, my friend says she never used it - she sold it?

I just think we will move an armchair into the nursery- there is one downstairs that is a pretty off white mock suede that my mum bought last year.

Sounds like the rest is pretty much there or thereabouts. PIL have asked if they can buy the 'travel system' but I wouldn't be comfortable with them spending so much money. The ones that get the best reviews are £600 and upwards. DH says we should let them - says they know what they cost and want to do it.

Grandmas want to buy the bedding sets and cot bumpers.

SIL has asked if she can buy the cot and paint murals on the nursery wall- she does illustrations for children's books as a sideline.

DH is of the view that if we get the important bits right now, we can use them again.

So we are off to John Lewis on Friday to do some choosing and ordering of bigger things. They have some very expensive ranges but some that are nice but. more reasonably priced. I am still in shock!

Cupcake92 · 19/08/2014 17:34

Oh gosh lulu! I didn't have half of that stuff lol!
I hat a changing mat and just changed on the floor or sofa.
I never had cot bumpers. Just sheets and a sleeping bag/grow bag.
I never ended up breast feeding but I had a nursing pillow. Then there's no need for the nursing chair :)
And literally!! Only just today right now I have brought a bookcase/shelving unit for DS! Haha!
I only ever used the Moses basket, bouncer and baby gym when DS was newborn.

Oooooooo I do recommend a jumperoo for when they are able to hold their head up. BEST buy in the world!!! Babies love it! So great for them. They are £100 brand new but I got mine 2nd hand for £40 and it looks brand new!

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 17:20

Ohh and instead of a changing unit (which can be very pricey) we got a chest of drawers with a changing mat on top. I have all my nappies/creams and thigs in the top draw where thy would be easy to grab Smile

Ducky23 · 19/08/2014 17:16

I'm pretty sure that the travel system should include a car seat? Mine did, maybe have a look for one that includes it. And my baby gym I clips and becomes a play mat (it's a hello earnest one in blue and I love it!)

With the cot bedding, can you do with less bedding/bumpers? It shocked me how expensive that is!!! Shock

But the rest of it I think you will probably need, that's why we started at 20 weeks so we could spread it out.

we got the cot off e bay, it was hardly used and looks lovely, a right bargain! Dm got the travel system (it was on sale from £600 to £150 Grin) and the Moses basket was v cheap from asda.

And a lot of it is stuff that friends have handed down. Do you know anyone who has recently had a baby? Maybe you could grab some bits from them?

LuluJakey1 · 19/08/2014 17:04

Dh has made a list and I am shocked at how much stuff and how much money it is potentially.

Travel system
Car seat
Baby bouncer
Cot
Mattress
Duvet
Bedding sets x 4
Cot bumpers x 2
Nursery lights
Nursing chair
Wardrobe
Changing chest
Bookcase/shelf unit
Changing mat
Moses basket
Travel cot
Baby monitor
Baby bath support
bath robe
Play mat
Baby gym
Mobiles
towels
high chair
Clothes
Sterilizer
Bottles
Bottle brushes
Changing bag
Muslin squares
Toiletries
Nappies

It is a fortune and where does it all go? Where do you keep the buggy, carry cot/pram thing? We don't have anywhere to put it.

Do babies need all of these things?

iamdivergent · 19/08/2014 16:02

We have family moses basket and cot (we are 4th generation to use the cot!) and did the booster seat on chair as no space for high chair Smile

OP posts:
Cupcake92 · 19/08/2014 15:52

I've never had a high chair for DS lol! Bad mom!
I fed him in a bumbo with a tray. Then he has a booster high chair with a tray that u attach to a normal chair.
Aw I can't wait to clothes shop tho :')
I deffo want a new Moses basket as DS's one was rele wide and he struggled to sleep in it. I want one that's snug. Ooo and a swaddle blanket!
