Though you need to check the actual referral criteria for your area. It may be on hfea site, not sure. Some areas dont pay for eg if 1 person already has kids.
Also i believe most dont follow the recommended 3 rounds of ivf by NICE , i think mine did 1 ... As long as my bmi was under 30. Didnt smoke, no other kids.
I would be aware of how many they fund vs how many you think you could go through and work out if you need to save up for any extra ones. Or also if ideally you want more kids (certainly our area doesnt fund for a sibling even if you originally were allowed say 2. But might fund transfer of frozen embies.

Good luck encouraging him to lose weight

victoria401 · 25/05/2014 09:54

I've read the NICE guidelines for referral and it mentions weight. I don't know what bmi dh actually is in comparison. They might mean mega huge fat, can't get through the door! I'll have to double check! I only really skim read it at the time anyway before we even had a diagnosis and never thought it would happen to us etc.

naty1 · 25/05/2014 00:09

Well they never asked about or weight OH. But may depend on clinic and thjs was about 2010. He was about bmi 30.
It may be worth scaring him that he may have too as he may have to.
Doesnt smoking block.arteries (can cause ED) so maybe impacts circulation.

victoria401 · 24/05/2014 09:09

My dh has 'given up' but he's puffing away on these e-cigs instead. I don't know how good/bad these things are. They still have nicotine. I can't seem to find anything anywhere about what it is in smoking that's bad for sperm. Whether its the nicotine or the tobacco/tar/other crap that's in fags.

Dh also needs to lose weight. I think they give you a BMI you need to be under for ivf? I'm fine though I'm a perfect BMI, well I'm just perfect full stop lol! ;-)

naty1 · 23/05/2014 17:00

I hope he gave up!

chrissie44 · 23/05/2014 14:57

thank you ladies x

Maybe2014 · 23/05/2014 13:38

My sisters husband had the same issue with antibodies and were offered ICSI but wouldn't offer them any treatment unless he gave up smoking. So there's deffo a chance for you!!! Xx

Does that mean icsi for you?

victoria401 · 23/05/2014 10:28

There was a reading at the bottom of our form for a spermMAR test. I'm sure yours will be fine. Its quite a rare thing apparently. Just our luck :-(

naty1 · 23/05/2014 08:34

So what does that mean.
We never had any mention of antibodies.
Is his immune system killing them off?

victoria401 · 22/05/2014 22:45

My hubby's results are 100% antisperm antibodies. Not looking good for us :-(

victoria401 · 22/05/2014 22:44

The home tests only do quantity not quality. I wouldn't bother if I were you. Get it done properly :-)

naty1 · 22/05/2014 22:34

Dont know but think its only about £80 at fertility clinic

Maybe2014 · 22/05/2014 19:37

Never tried but seen them! Let us know how it goes if you did get one! Xx

hi, i am new to this, but while on the topic, has anyone tried a home kit, i found a semen analysis kit in boots and wondered if that would be any use while we wait until its time to see the DR etc xx

naty1 · 22/05/2014 13:46

Hopefully they will say do a retest as it could improve.

victoria401 · 21/05/2014 19:05

There is a bit of an issue. Picking up a copy of the results tomorrow so hopefully someone here can help! The doc just spoke to dh in some kind of layman speak instead of the nitty gritty!

naty1 · 20/05/2014 17:24

Dr appt.
I was there too.
As i already knew i had an issue his issue was a real surprise

Maybe2014 · 20/05/2014 13:25

We had to make an appointment with the GP two weeks after the sample both times and both times we got to the GP she couldn't find them on the PC so he had to go back the week later to pick the paper results up from the reception was all very frustrating! Hope his results are ok. Xx

Grrrrrrrr dh just called me on his lunch break. They wouldn't give him the results on the phone. He's booked to have a call from the doctor at 6pm TOMORROW! FFS! As if we havent waited long enough! Dh is convinced there must be something wrong if the doc needs to break it to him. How did you guys get the results?

Maybe2014 · 20/05/2014 11:04

Wow all sounds really familiar! Our GP forgot to refer us too! Good luck today! X

victoria401 · 20/05/2014 07:48

The GP said we'd get referred after 2 years no matter what the results were. We would need to get everything repeated again within 3 months of sending out the referral letter. Plus I'm 34 now and worrying about the dreaded 35!

Just sent dh a text reminding him to ask for a copy! Bet he forgets. Or they refuse him one, can they do that?!

We've been waiting months for this moment as first of all the GP 'forgot' to send his referral letter off to the clinic. So after waiting ages for a date he decided to call and there was no record of a referral! So he had to go on waiting list again! They said to call GP in 10 days for the result but they didn't have it and said try in another week, which we did. Still no result! Dh called the clinic direct yesterday who said they sent the result to the GP THE DAY AFTER THE TEST! So GP's had probably lost it. I'll be losing it too if he doesn't get the result today!

Yes we were successful 1st go
Though second was not
Goes to show it can just be luck :(
Victoria sounds a lot like mine
Bmi 30
Scoffs cakes, cheese, anything
Never exercises

(But no smoking ever)
Yours stopping could have made a big difference you just dont know

It may be neither of you about 1/3 are unexplained.

I think men are harder to change, i did lots myself but couldnt change him.

Good luck.
There are pros and cons
Pro if you get diagnosed you can possibly fast track to ivf, otherwise they may suggest trying longer. I have seen 3 yrs before referral whereas i had DD by 3yrs ttc. (Whilst other friends were onto no 2)
Con
Feeling theres no point trying naturally, before and around ivf cycles. Which would seem more worthwhile if unexplained.
When ttc#2 we have gone straight back to ivf but again no guarantee of success. In some ways that is better than secondary infertility because at least i knew there is an issue so have a chance at planning a gap between kids. But as this will be last go most likely will just be happy (very happy) with DD

Good luck
