Hello i am really new to this (and feelin a bit silly to ask) but is there really anything such as a false negative? this sounds daft and paranoid, but i am three days late (i know i know, wow! but i am REGULAR AS CLOCKWORK!!) and did a test yesterday but it was negative. is there a glimmer?? All comments gratefully recieved! Thank you!

false negatives happen all the time as there may not be enough hormone to detect, id do another text either tomo or in a few days time and see how that comes back, as the last was 5 days ago you should have already waited long enough to get a more accurate result!

chakara · 19/10/2006 04:16

I've been wondering about false negatives too. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks late. I took a test (Poundland one) five days ago and it was negative.

The thing is, I feel nauseous every time I eat (and I'm starving). My breasts are tender and swollen. I seem to have more discharge and it feels like dripping so I keep running to the toilet SURE that my period has come. I seem to be peeing more often. My complexion's quite bad right now (I usually have clear skin). I feel warmer than usual. I'm also getting stomach cramps (I rarely get these with a period) which turns out to be increased flatulence

I don't know if I'm actually pregnant or if I'm only noticing all these little things becasue I think I am. The funny thing is, I didn't know half of those things could be symptoms until AFTER I'd experienced them and looked them up. Websites are useless though and don't tell me when some of these would be likely to happen. I feel like I'm going mad

I don't know how quickly I should do another test. Should I wait for the next due date for my period, i.e. around about the 30th?

manuka · 19/08/2006 07:44

Also I would like to add that the only reason why I'm up at this obscene time on a saturday morning is my magic baby is awake! Magic because I wasn't ovulating due to mad hormone profile but having all the signs of pregnancy. Had appointment to see specialist to find out what causing it but b4 I went I had reflexology and healing then went on holiday and came back pregnant! Hurrah she is asleep! Back to bed for both of us!

manuka · 19/08/2006 07:37

Hello! I went through all this too. should have bought shares in Clear Blue! This'll do your head in: one of my patients had normal periods and only sign she was FIVE MONTHS pregnant was breast growth. Another patient had period lasting over 6 weeks which turned out to be caused by pregnancy which went full term. My doctor had a patient who with each pregnancy had negative urine and bloods throughout so what can you say? Bodies dont always follow the rules. (I'm not a doc, I do lymph drainage and have worked with 'infertile' people who now parents)

meira · 19/08/2006 03:34

tash351, sorry about your news really i am.
now i am really confused. i took another preg test yesterday and it was neg. i could not believe it, not convinced this was right. so i took another tonight and i have a very very faint poss. well my husband is in shock and finds it hard to believe. so i went and got another test and that was neg!! what is going on? now i have to wait until next week to go to the docs and then i have to wait for the results. doin my head in now x

babyonboard · 17/08/2006 12:55

I've had false negatives, and false positives many times.
I even took a test at 34 weeks preg. just because I was bored which was , amusingly, negative.

I now only rely on the doctors blood tests.

Godd luck to everyone ttc! we will be soon I'm just waiting for my body to recover after a mc.

Tash351 · 17/08/2006 12:51

well mine was a real negative this time, so back to BD for me! Meira any news for you?

OP posts:
belgo · 17/08/2006 08:58

had a false negetive at five weeks of pregnancy, despite high hormone levels and pregnancy symptoms! That was a waste of 17 euros...

Tash351 · 16/08/2006 17:29

meira its bad news i'm afraid.. after convincing myself i was pregnant and the two tests were reading wrong i bloody came (can i say bloody on here?) on at work this afternoon. I felt so good last night, shame but suppose i have to get on with it.
But i don't want to put a downer on your situation. Your are 3 weeks late aren't u? Maybe you should go for a test at docs instead? please keep me informed of your situation, all the very best of luck x

don't want to burst anyone's bubble but it is possible that a neg could just mean you're not pregnant. It's possible to skip a period sometimes for no apparent reason. Sometimes the body just does this.

In May I went through something similar, had slight spotting but no af and did several pg tests and all were bfn. went to gp who told me I was prob pg but to wait another two weeks and do another test, I did and it was still bfn. went back to the surgery, they did a blood test but hospital said they don't test for hcg so had to do another urine test. Again that was negative, gp was on the verge of sending me for an ultrasound when my period arrived, exactly 28 days late. Yes it is possible to have a false negative, but it's more likely your body is just out of sinc for some reason. good luck x

meira · 16/08/2006 15:20

Tash351, let me know whats going on with you, because i know we are going through the same thing. i refuse to take another test, mine are always neagtive!!!
Have you had your period yet?
oh and by the way i do know how to spell 'symptoms' my last message was posted at 2am. not that you are bothered, i am though!

Tash351 · 16/08/2006 15:08

hi meria, i am now in the 2 neg's position the same as you! foolishly i took one another one this morning, and now i am gutted again! i know what you mean about the symptoms too, last night on the sofa i thought i could actually feel it growing (vivid imagination since an early age!!!) but still no period, and i was sure that i had a metalic taste in my mouth, but they have both vanished today. Your situation sounds promising tho, 7 weeks, surley those neg's must be wrong? I don't know what to do next either, expect wait, but i've never been any good at that. Hope your next result is a positive one, fingers crossed!

I had a false negative the day after I was due. Waited a few days and finally got a positive at 5 days. (Dd2 now 9 months old). Used clearblue digital both times.
Have heard that early morning urine is the best to use, as it contains the highest convcentration of hormones.

meira · 16/08/2006 02:51

tash351, i am totally with you. completely in the same situation as you. 2x neg tests, but still convinsed i may be pos. i thought i did have simptoms for a while, felt sick, kept crying, lost my apetite. now all that has gone, i am only left with a pouch in my tummy. is it getting bigger or am i just hoping??? i dont want to test again cause i hate the negative answer. i would be 7 weeks gone. i know it doesnt sound promising but something keeps pulling me back to thinking different. oh, and i cant spell to save my life!!!!!

jasper · 15/08/2006 22:59

yes I had one.
Was overwhelmingly tired and a few days late. Showed neg but I was indeed pregnant

Tash351 · 15/08/2006 22:23

will do, fingers crossed!
