Well I used to get weird looks in waitrose when I called after dd when she was small.
Her name is Rose and I'd have to stop myself shouting "wait Rose!" and shout instead "Rose wait!"
But would often end up hollering both numerous times till i sounded completely deranged.
When I did it in sainsburys it sounded even weirder.lol

Finbar does make me think of Viz, like Cod, but I think we're just showing our age here.

Suspect my children's names a bit twatty (not ds3 actually, in top 100 as we were runnign out of twatty ideas) but I don't care. DS1 says he likes his name as "there are no other XXXs in the school." bless him.

I ditto MJC re not thinking Finn is "thin". I did when my Finbar was first born and would call him Fat Finn (not that he was!) but that association soon fades. I think it is the same with many names - once you have used them for a bit you forget what you first thought of them.

You can't have meant my DH, he has a name that is very much of it's time. I have never met a person under the age of 15 (even when I was 15) with the name. Can't imagine a modern baby with it.

N.B. - DH is NOT called Gary, I think that one has to be one of the worst, along with Wayne for dating terribly.

Nope. DS1 & DS2 have biblical names (not for any religious reason) and DD has a reasonably popular (not common, though ) name. Never, ever heard DD's name being screeched in the street by other parents.

Honestly, IME, most people look as me as though I have made the name up, and amongst casual aquaintances, eg people you know in the playground, most are completely incapable of remembering his name. They are always asking me again what his name is or saying "errrr your little one is running off" etc.

Perhaps I just mix with no hopers....

Iota, yes I know the cat Finbar on Pablo and also the shark on Rubbadubbers! And no, he was not named after either of those! (or indeed, after anyone)

Oh SP also just thought of Fintan. It is Irish and I don't know what it means, but another Fin name for you.

Well it gets a lot of odd reactions, so be warned! I think Finlay is more acceptable (but also more commonplace). I often call my children by their first syllable and in his case, Fin attracts a lot less attention. Yes it means "white head" but I don't worry about name meanings - just as well as all my children are dark.

Have you thought of Fingal "white stranger", Finlay "white warrior" or Finn/Finnian "white/fair"?

cool. I am probably going to go for a Fin- name for my next actually, because it means pale doesn't it? (I have a scottish book, not an irish one). if he's dark it may have to be something else, but that's unlikely. it's not twatty!

It is Finbar SP. I have yet to meet anyone not Irish who can hear it without assuming I pciked 2 random syllables and threw them together to make a name.

In answer to the original question, re ds3's name: yes.

I must admit, it is a bit embarrassing, tedious, but I wouldn't change his name for anything.

i only like the sweetcure stuff and cut off all the white bits. Bacon aisles should be evicted.

But more importantly - do you lot really have whole aisles of bacon where you live? mmmm bacon.
