How long could you not poas?

Hi, Refoca here. Still fairly new, mostly a lurker, nearly ttc. I'm late 20s with one DS. waves hello

Anyway, enough intros...

With DS1, I delayed POAS...we were ttc, temping, knew AF was at least 2 weeks late and more likely 4 weeks late (irregular periods, and two temp peaks), but wanted to find out on our terms.

If/when I suspect we're pg this time round, can I hold out longer? I love a good secret, and I loved that my body had a secret I could guess at but didn't know for sure...

Am I just a bit nuts? Or would anyone else join me in not POAS until you're well beyond any logical doubt? Think of the money and stress you could save, no faint positives, no BFN followed by AF the next day, just an instant very BFP when you're already 4, 5, 6 (or more?!?) weeks pg.

Who's with me?

Smile Refoca.

4 babies even! Sorry, too late and the three of 'three years' obviously lodged in my brain.

Sorry to hear AF got you this cycle dontcall - fingers crossed it's your happy story this time next month. And you have 3 babies just ahead of yours to hand down tips and clothes...

No need to poas for me, AF is here a day early.

For the past four months, on the day I find out I'm not pregnant, a friend has also announced a miracle pregnancy. This month it was a good friend who has been trying for three years and happened to get a bfp on the same day their ivf referral letter arrived. Last month it was a successful ivf round where only one egg was retrieved and was of poor quality but they went for it anyway!! I'm so happy for all my lovely friends who are now expecting long awaited LOs however it would be nice if the universe cut me some slack with the timing!!!

I found that thread you were talking about, dontcall, and I'm a little worried about my tactics now as it said she'd had a period 2 weeks before?!?

Dontcall ttc #2, 9th cycle, not testing until (ntu) 21st Aug

Refoca, ttc #2, ntu 14th Sept

ttc #2, 9th cycle, husband has confiscated my tests with an agreed testing date of 21st.

Have you seen the thread going at the moment where the OP asked last week what the pain she was feeling could be. Next morning gave birth to a girl? No idea she was pregnant, it does happen! The thread title is something like "what could this be tmi"

Refoca · 17/08/2013 07:56

Shall we have a role call? Including date you're trying to wait until to test?

I'm mid-cycle at the mo, so guess I should wait about a month...

Refoca, ttc #2, testing no earlier than 14th Sept

Morning everyone :-)

VJones - I caved on one of my cycles last time round, I'm hoping with a few more of us I can keep my resolve to not waste money/stress. You can do it!

Writer - two tests a day?!? You're the anti-no-tester, hehe. You can say you had your BFP within 12 hours of enough hormones being there to test though, kinda cool, which is why I'll cave if I do.

International - sorry last cycle was BFN, fingers crossed for this time round...sure you could hold out an extra few days or a week this time, stick around :-)

ichoo, bikerunski, fratercula - exactly! Thanks for the encouragement :-)

dontcall - not too late to leave it a couple of weeks before you next test ;-) fingers crossed either way!

I'm normally horribly impatient, but with all the heartache involved with early pg I've seen. I'm mostly just jealous of anyone who finds out when they get suspected appendicitis and come out of hospital with a baby instead! When you're actively trying, delaying poas is the best you can do. Plus, a little delay in finding out means I have a little less time to wait before lo arrives...my impatience is satisfied ;-) Haha

Ah right, well that's good to know because I thought it was meant to last for ages as well.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:34

I only had one episode of EWCM on the 7th July (the day before I predicted I ovulated) and I was panicked because I thought it was supposed to last a few days.

EWCM came on CD16 and we had DTD on CD12, CD15 and CD17.

During the 2WW I was kicking myself, internally shouting at myself for not having DTD enough but obviously we got lucky.

DontCallMeDaughter · 16/08/2013 21:30

Oh man... I'm only 9dpo and I've been testing for 2 days already (bfn). I wish I had the strength to wait until AF was due never mind actually late... You're amazing!!

VJONES1985 · 16/08/2013 21:30

Mo, haven't been temping. Have looked at cm but only had clear stuff until about cd8 and nothing since.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:27

Well I really hope it happens soon for you - just prepare yourself that it can take some time to conceive after having been on the Pill. All you can do is keep trying with the OPK sticks and DTD when you can.

Have you been charting your temperature and CM too?

When I started TTC I went out and bought thermometers, OPK sticks, basal charts for plotting etc - I went a bit overboard actually.

Thankfully I didn't need it but I was preparing for the long haul!!

VJONES1985 · 16/08/2013 21:24

Yes, every one or two days.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:21

Oh right - I took the pill about 14 years ago for a brief stint so my in-depth knowledge on it is very minimal Smile

Have you been regularly been DTD??

FraterculaArctica · 16/08/2013 21:21

I didn't test until 6+6. Admittedly I was overseas between 3+6 and 5+0, and put late period down to that. But like ichoo, I thought I'd save a lot of worry by not testing 'too early'. Meant I had time to get used to the idea there was something going on & BFP wasn't a big surprise! (Am 9+4 today).

VJONES1985 · 16/08/2013 21:19

My period lasted three days. I don't remember how long or regular my periods were before I went on the pill but sometimes coming off the pill can cause the body to release an egg.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:18

I meant I predicted I would ovulate on the CD16 Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:17

CD9 would mean your period had not long finished though?

Or did you have a very short period?

Were your periods normally regular? Mine were always 30 days long, so I predicted I would predict on CD16 as that would be 14 days before the expected date of my next period.

VJONES1985 · 16/08/2013 21:16

Writer - that would be early, yes, but I had just come off the pill so that could have had an effect. I guess I need to admit I've probably got a wee infection and not pg!!

VJONES1985 · 16/08/2013 21:14

I suppose if I am pg, I may have ov before cd9 or I could have missed my LH surge eg. By testing at the wrong time of day.

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2013 21:14

I waited a full month since LMP both times, to.be certain. Uncertain results would have doe my head in. But I didi get pg straight away both times. Don' t know if I would have had the patience if it had ever taken longer.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:13

FWIW - when I did ovulate I was on CD16.
CD9 (and in that area) would be very early for ovulation I would think.....

You tend not to ovulate until 2 weeks prior to your period being due.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/08/2013 21:12

Well, I'm no expert, never having used them, but that was my general understanding - I could be wrong though! Maybe you see if there are any threads specifically about OPKs and see what other women have experienced with them?
