I'm very pro breastfeeding as well and hope to BF my kids if I can (sorry this is kinda going off topic) but I think it's a real shame that people now seem to look down on women who use formula, whether it's through choice or through circumstances that prevented BF. One of my pals was really ill after giving birth and by the time her health would have allowed her to BF she had no milk left. Formula is just as good as breast milk these days, except maybe for the first 2 days where BF provides colostrum but with hygiene standards the way they are that's just a bonus it's not needed.

-rant over-

p.s. Did you POAS londa?

LittleMachine · 09/07/2013 10:46

I'm on the edge of my seat here waiting for Linda!

LoveWine · 09/07/2013 10:36

Brilliant news for your friend!!!!!

My epilepsy Nurse has warned me about breast feeding and how it can induce seizures just because the mother gets exhausted - which is a big trigger for seizures.

I am very pro-breast feeding but she has advised that if I do struggle to cope with it then I should try to express so DH can feed baby whilst I get some sleep. however, I know expressing can be a very hard task in itself so if I feel that formula is my only option in order to stay healthy myself then so be it.

Me and my hubby are also going along the lines of, "If we get one happy healthy baby then we'll stop at one" because we know it isn't going to be an easy journey. I have been warned that pregnancy may cause my epilepsy to return which would mean I'd lose my licence...which would be bad enough, but my job is dependent on my licence. So I'm taking a big risk but I am more than happy to do it for the sake of a baby.

I have also stopped taking my Beta-Blockers too in order to completely minimise any risks to the baby - I don't think my GP/Cardiac Nurse is in agreement but it is my choice at the end of the day.

I just so desperately want a baby which is why I can't cope with hearing negativity all the time Sad

Dumdeedumdeedum · 09/07/2013 10:24

Writer my BFF is epileptic (and a special rare kind to boot) and had a happy healthy baby boy 9 months ago. They have decided to stick at 1 DC because of the risks and are happy with that. Her only problem was that breast feeding was making her fit, but her stupid HV and MW wouldn't support her in switching to formula...still makes me angry thinking about it. It is perfectly possible with the right health care.

Writerwannabe83 · 09/07/2013 10:07

There are - and ones that are in far worse situations than I am.

I have been seizure free for over 7 years, I'm on the safest anti-seizure drug for pregnancy and I take a very safe dose of it.

I'm under an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse and when I do get pregnant I will be under an obstetrician that deals with women with epilepsy.

So I'm pretty much covered from all angles.

I don't know why they can't just be happy for us.
If I do get pregnant there will be negativity from the moment I tell them. I'm already dreading it!!!

ChubbyKitty · 09/07/2013 10:02

Oh good lord. That's crazy. Surely there's lots of women with epilepsy who have babies?

Writerwannabe83 · 09/07/2013 10:01

Thanks everyone,

My dad isn't too excited about the thought either but at least he keeps his opinions to himself. I can see it in his eyes though that he doesn't approve.

However, I have got so many excited friends and family around me, and now supportive MumsNetters that I'm just focusing on the positivity.

Between my health problems (epilepsy and heart) and a lost Mirena Coil it has taken me about 10 months to get to the point of being told, "Yes, you are ok to try and have a baby" and now that the time is here it feels so, so surreal!! Smile

I want the whole thing to be about excitement and happiness!!

I'm avoiding the grandparents!!!

If I do get pregnant I won't tell them until after the birth Grin

FoxMulder · 09/07/2013 09:57

oops, I meant to write writer but it came out wrong

FoxMulder · 09/07/2013 09:56

You know, Linda, I've oft wondered the same thing (about keeping FMU to test later) I think I read on one test once that it should be 'fresh' but I've never seen another mention.

Winter you grandparents sound nuts.

gillywillywoo · 09/07/2013 09:51

Oh writer! Thanks
Your grandparents sound like stupid old fuddyduddys, sorry!

I know a few people with epilepsy and they all have children and they are doing fine.

You'll be a great mum! Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 09/07/2013 09:42

Gilly and Lindmagoo,

It is because I have epilepsy you see. I have had lots of pre-pregnancy counselling and have seen various specialists and the risk of there being anything wrong with my baby is only 0.6% higher than any other woman - so barely anything really.

But that isn't good enough for my grandparents.

They are constantly ringing my mom and having a moan about it. There last speech was, "Doesn't she know how extremely irresponsible she is and oesn't she care that her husband is going to have to give up work to look after her and the baby if she gets disabled?!"

They have even passed comments about Social Services and how they may say I'm not allowed to hold my own baby....

Shock

Their 'concern' is all very dramatic considering I haven't had a seizure in 7 years....

Still very upsetting to hear though Sad

Vikkijayne2507 · 09/07/2013 09:40

WTF Writer. I will also get lots of eyes rolling from oh parents they adore my step-son but they had so may issues with his mother I think they feel i will eventually turn into her. no chance I am not a crazy woman. I guess you just dont know until it happens what people really think

DisneyDiva87 · 09/07/2013 09:39

Yea sorry about disappearing Grin the weather was too good and my laptop charger has broken so I have no computer at home now. Yesterday was a local holiday so was off work.

If someone else hasn't beat me to it I'll start up the August bus

lindamagoo · 09/07/2013 09:37

Well because I was awake half the night feeling sick I knew I was going to test today so I saved it in a wee ceramic pot, lol. Just getting kids ready to go to chemist now

gillywillywoo · 09/07/2013 09:35
