Oh Crikey, looks like i'm the one who may keep you all guessing till 2013 lol

Talking about surnames, when we got married last year I didn't know what to do, I love my maiden name but I wanted any children (if we're lucky) to have same name as me and the father! I keep my maiden name for work! It was the strangest thing in the world to lose the name I'd had for 31 years, I'm still clinging onto it, haven't changed my driving licence yet!

I took DH name which I don't really like as it was never an option for him. I was married before and didn't take his name and there was always a joke it was because I knew it was doomed. So I had no chance.
Baby will have same surname. Just need to find a name that suits it. Hard though!

Rache1S · 04/12/2012 18:33

The name is such a difficult thing! Our baby will obviously have my married name but when I was engaged I agonised over whether to keep my name or not and only decided to take DH's name because I wanted us all to have the same name when we stared a family and our 2 names double barrelled sounded ridiculous.

A word to those who are planning to get married and change their name at some point though. My Step Sis already had a child from a previous relationship when she met and married my Bro in Law. As soon as she changed her name she had no end of trouble going through customs with a child with a different name to them, and as she lives abroad so this was quite regular. All is fine now as they all have the same name but for years she had to go being taken to an interrogation room before they would let her through!

BraveLilBear · 04/12/2012 17:21

Janey don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure my surname really won't work as a middle name. For a start, it is very common as a surname and ends with an 's' which is just plain weird.

But it makes perfect sense to me and means we don't have to go down the double-barrelled route. My sister just got married and refused to take her husband's surname because 'she is too proud of our family'.

He took it well, considering, tho it was awkward going through the wedding cards when it got to cheques written it what should have been her new name! She is planning to double-barrel their kids and tbh they're nice complementary names. Her hubby will allow that.

My OH has experience with this, hence his reluctance to double-barrell ours - he has a child from a previous relationship. He was double-barrelled then mum dropped the second half, meaning the child now shares a name with no-one (mum has married, half brothers and sister have family name) I think it's really harsh on him.

janey1234 · 04/12/2012 16:56

Oh and escorpion please don't worry about it! We just decided a thread or so ago that we were far too old and grumpy for that particular phrase Wink

janey1234 · 04/12/2012 16:55

Oh I REALLY want to pass on my surname. Mine is lovely and his is boring, and unfortunately associated with a really crappy trilogy of best-selling soft porn books Sad much to the hilarity of my friends.
My name just couldn't be a middle name - it wouldn't make sense and would sound odd. Not sure about using both, don't think I'm posh enough Xmas Wink

Quodlibet · 04/12/2012 16:02

I think ours will have DP's and my surname. Passing mine on is important to me. And they sound better together with mine last. Annoyingly his surname limits our first name choices quite a bit as lots of names that have the same sounds/letters in sound like a tongue-twister!

Purplemonster · 04/12/2012 15:34

We have that quandry too Hazle, I don't know what the answer is, I much prefer my surname tbh. Have agreed if it's a boy it definitely gets OH's surname (he only seems to care about names if it's a boy Hmm)
but otherwise, I just haven't decided. We were planning on getting married in the long run anyway so I suppose it's easier to use his surname but mine's nicer so I feel a wee bit sulky about the idea Grin

escorpion · 04/12/2012 15:29

Sorry, will not say the BD word again. Am new to all this slaps own wrist
In my OH country, people have two surnames, the first being the father´s and the second being the mother´s so that the mother´s surname isn´t lost. Brave I love the idea of using your surname as a middle name.

janey1234 · 04/12/2012 15:11

I'm with you brave, I'm going to be 13 weeks by the time I have my booking in appointment, and then they will arrange my 12 week scan. Ah, the efficiency. Thank goodness we can afford a private one on Christmas eve. And it's not just due to me going abroad - the first date they offered me for a booking in appointment was a couple of days before the 12 week point. Great.

hazle - glad they're back (in that it's reassuring) but am obviously sorry you've got MS back. I seem to still be escaping it on the whole...

BraveLilBear · 04/12/2012 15:06

Hey Janey welcome home you jetsetter you! So glad you had a good time and no problems to speak of apart from vomity children in-flight Xmas Grin

Hazle my plan is to have child take OH's last name, but my last name as an extra middle name. That way, we will always have a connection to my family (even after me and OH get wed.... when he proposes), plus it will make it easier to travel abroad.

Sounds frustrating purple. I was told last week that I'd get my booking-in appointment 'through the post in 1-2 weeks'! Could be 9 weeks+ before I see anyone at this rate. Which, seeing as Xmas Day is 9+2 for me, means it's more likely to be 10-11 weeks Shock

If it's as late as that, may have to get private scan... could be my excuse!

HazleNutt · 04/12/2012 14:59

janey thanks for asking, yes they're all here again this morning. But really just disappeared suddenly last evening, there one minute, gone the next, quite scary.

Ours will get a double-barreled name as that's what I have and DH's is I think the most common name in this area. Imagine doctor's waiting room, they call "Madam DH's name!" and 5 people jump up..
And if it was common and easy, I wouldnt' mind so much, but there are about 6 different ways to spell it, so common and still a pain.

janey1234 · 04/12/2012 14:40

Hey all! Back from Dubai for a hectic three days in the office before skipping off to Thailand. It's bloody cold here - feels like I landed back in a different season!

hazle - have you got any symptoms back? I still don't really have any since they disappeared, except occasional nausea at certain smells. Oh and very nearly was sick last night as the plane was landing into heathrow when a three year old on the row in front vomited EVERYWHERE 20 mins before landing, and it stank. Honestly, everyone on the plane was holding blankets and pillows over their noses, I was so nearly sick - but so were my friends who aren't pg! It was gross, stank of rotten eggs...
Name-wise, I think it will be taking DP's name. My surname is MUCH more unusual (but not too unusual IYSWIM) and MUCH nicer, and I promised my Popa when I was 9 I would carry on the family name... but I think it will be a no-go as far as he's concerned. I'm not really that bothered and one of my friends in the same situation said that it was easy for her to bond with the baby having carried it and having to feed it, but that the surname was the only tangible thing for her DP so she didn't want to take it away from him.

rache - I'm really sorry but your puppy vomit story really made me laugh!

TTCers - the unmentionable in the news is driving me mad, so can only begin to imagine how annoying/depressing it is to you Sad. Agree it should be banned with babydust here! And good luck for those of you on the 2ww, it drags so much I know....

Oh regarding names, what are you all (TTC ones too!) plannig to do with last names, if you don't have the same name as DH?

Purplemonster · 04/12/2012 14:05

12 week scan...still flipping waiting for a date, every time I call they 'haven't got the paperwork yet'. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks though.
I like traditional names so I'm worried, especially seeing as unmentionable babies Dad's name is a 'family' name and a definite middle name for a boy for us so could end up looking really naff. Shan't mention unmentionable royal news again, promise.

HazleNutt · 04/12/2012 13:37

Ok the minute I posted it the doc called nad moved the appointment to Friday the 7th. Well not that one day would matter that much.
