Captain sorry you've had a rough bit of news. I actually have a friend who had one of them (she even gave it a nickname). Good news is she conceived while waiting to have it removed and I think ended up having it taken out between her first pregnancy and her second - she now has 2 healthy children. Not surprised you feel a bit floored though Sad.

BraveLilBear · 06/12/2012 14:51

Oh no Captain that sounds like a nasty shock. Sorry to hear that. Please don't be disgusted with yourself - it's not your fault, just a part of your body has gone all independent.

Definitely put Dr Google away. He is no help at all.

Good news? It's benign. The rest you can find out later from the doc. When do you see the doctor about it all?

Thinking of you Thanks

captainmoll · 06/12/2012 14:40

AAAARRGGHHHH!!!! I just looked up the type of cyst it is - Dermoid.

MS sufferers - vom warning!

Dermoid cysts are a form of teratoma, so it's got hair and possibly teeth and glands and things! It's basically one of my ova that has decided to develop itself on my ovary despite not meeting any sperm to do it properly. I am so disgusted with myself!

I am putting Dr Google away now. Calm.

captainmoll · 06/12/2012 14:06

Just got back from my ultrasound.
Turns out I have a 5cm wide cyst on my left ovary that also appears to be blocking the fallopian tube. The right ovary looks healthy but is a bit bigger than usual.
The ultrasound lady (radiographer?) didn't know what the effect of any of this would be on my fertility, but I can't imagine a 5cm cyst growing off my ovary (and apparently for a really long time too) could ever be a good thing.

Does anyone have any experience of similar? I don't think it's the same as PCOS, since there's only one cyst, although it's clearly a whopper. The woman was pretty jaw-on-floor about it, although very firm that it was totally benign. She was amazed I wasn't in pain from it at all..

(Obviously, will be going to see docs to discuss in full, but just after some idea of things in the meantime)

Purplemonster · 06/12/2012 13:11

Anyone else had the revolting, but apprently quite common pregnancy symptom of nosebleeds or is it just me?

BraveLilBear · 06/12/2012 11:17

Rache bought some gaviscon yesterday as I've been struggling so much with acid reflux it's making me feel sick. This is really really unusual for me and I'm not enjoying it much Xmas Sad but have discovered newfound sympathy for my father who because he smokes and drinks alcohol and coffee too much and has a terrible diet but I love him dearly suffers really badly with acid reflux all the time.

It was the aniseed flavour and I bought it out of desperation when I discovered I was feeling worse after eating! Took a couple of spoonfuls before bed. Flavour wasn't so bad but the aftertaste nearly made me yack. Amazingly though, 20 minutes later, stopped feeling so grim... but then it started to reappear about 45 minutes later!

Rache1S · 06/12/2012 11:06

Bah humbug to AF Happy Xmas Sad

10+6 and very bloated here. I popped the button on my best fitted work trousers last week Xmas Smile I think it's safe to take Gaviscon, Rennies, etc. to help with indigestion and bloating but I have found so far that a glass of ice cold milk about half an hour after eating seems to help so have avoided taking any actual medication so far.

Quod I have an allegedly decent employer who posted pre tax profits of 13 million last year but all I will get is the minimum legal requirement of 90% salary for 6 weeks and then SMP @ £135.45 for the next 33 weeks (which I will have to pay tax on due to my company car) and then sweet FA after that if I choose to take the full year's maternity leave. Not all of us PAYE employees have it good Xmas Sad

BraveLilBear · 06/12/2012 10:50

Oh Happy That is rubbish news. Sorry to hear that Sad

Thanks for the insight Pip - very interesting to hear about alphabeticalness making a difference.

And didn't see the BBC Breakfast report, but it explains a lot - ie everyone on Facebook making announcements every five minutes, not being able to see mw for ages and ages. This will upset my OH considerably - he hates the Olympics. Hates it. He will be pigsick if anyone thinks we were inspired by it!

Could also be bad news for all those ladies with BFPs - fewer school places in 4/5 years time. But still, very glad to be pg!

janey1234 · 06/12/2012 10:43

Yes to the horrendous bloating. Still managing to eat as much though! In Dubai it reached disgusting proportions - did not like being in my bikini next to my 28 year old, size 8 stunning friend. I looked about 5 months gone by the end of each day (bloating increases during the day, attractively).
Have warned DP about how I'll look in my bikini in Thailand. Not sure he'll care (or so I'm telling myself!)

Quodlibet · 06/12/2012 10:25

Sorry to hear that Happy.

Has anyone else got HORRENDOUS bloating? I am having to eat smaller and smaller portions, feeling stuffed after a tiny meal, and am going to bed hours after eating anything feeling packed to the rafters and really sore. It's like my digestion has just stalled.

janey1234 · 06/12/2012 09:17

New Year baby would be nice though? Also means boozing would be OK over Christmas...?
Every cloud...
Still sucks though Sad
FWIW my cycle was all over the place - from 23 days to 28 - but I've conceived, so I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. Just might make it worth using clear blue ovulation sticks or something if your OV date is jumping around the place, as mine was...

janey1234 · 06/12/2012 09:16

I'm sorry happy. That sucks Sad Sad

happylass · 06/12/2012 07:32

Thanks Pip, very interesting, my maiden name was end of alphabet, my married name starts with a C so maybe that will make a difference. I also intend to be like my friends who are mums and work a lot on reading and numbers before they start school.

Quodlibet · 05/12/2012 22:18

Captain, thanks - I did know about maternity allowance thanks, it's just not the same as having the same kind of % of salary you'd get with most decent employers. I will have to work out how to play it, because I will need to keep my hand in with my regular freelance job, but I think you are not allowed to do more than about 5 'keeping in touch' days otherwise you lose MA (which is about £100/wk I think - not easy to live on in London!)

Pipbin · 05/12/2012 21:58

Hello Ladies, and new ladies.

So I was on a course today, which meant I was home before DH. He got home and I told him that the internet wasn't working. He went off to check and came back saying it was an area fault. 'Well' he said 'it's things like this that mean families get started' and off we went to bed!

Also, did anyone see the item on BBC Breakfast this morning? It was saying that there has been a rise in the birth rate and it's thought to be down to the olympics. Seems that all that winning got people shagging. DH and I are geeks though so it takes a lack of internet for us.

Right, schools. Here is how it works. They have a staggered intake into nursery, they start the term after they turn 3 (I think), then, here at least, all move up to Reception, the academic year they turn 5. So an August birthday who would turn 5 next year would have started Reception this September. It also means that some children can have nearly two full years in Nursery. Children are not compulsory school age until the term after they turn 5. I would definitely advocate getting your child into school as soon as you can, however, because they are not compulsory school age then it does mean you can take them out during school time if you want, for a holiday for example.

As for the difference of being a summer baby academically, yes it can be an issue, for example I have a girl in my class who turned 5 in the first week of September, there is also a boy who turned 4 only 2 weeks before and he is in the same class. Damn near as a year different in age, but then that will always be the case, the line has to be drawn somewhere.
As for what this means academically, my honest opinion is that parenting makes far far more difference. One of my most able children in a July birthday. The difference is that his mother reads and works with him.
As for alphabetical, I have to confess that this can make a difference.
I tend to work down an alphabetical list of children when I am going to hear them read, work with them, write their reports etc, by the time you get to the bottom of the list you have lost impetus. For that reason I try to change the order and mix it up a bit.

Evening all!

Haven't been able to watch or read the news today because of that thing we don't speak of! OMG this is going to drive me nuts over the next 6 months!

I have over a week to wait till OV time, hubby has always been complaining why can't I ovulate on a weekend and looks like FX I will be able to comply this month! My 2 apps where I fill in all my dates estimate OV between 14-17 which is a fri and mon and we have also taken those days off work so no stress there - keep everything crossed for us ladies x

I am also trying not to think of finances that much (hard considering I'm a bank manager lol) and will have to play it by ear. Otherwise would not have a baby due to fear!

Hi all
AF has buggered off so now back to twiddling thumbs and hoping DH's upcoming 10-day trip abroad doesn't mean he's away for the crucial OV days and that he's up for a warm welcome when he gets back (despite the jet-lag) Xmas Wink
Welcome new folk! Have a mince pie..
Quod I am also self-employed, and found out recently from another self-employed friend who had a baby in the summer that we CAN get maternity pay!!! Apparently, as long as you've made some National Insurance contribution, there is a state maternity pay that you should be eligible for! I was pretty astounded to find this out (and I expect it's not much, but..) sometimes this welfare state thing is pretty good.. Let me know if you investigate and find out any more about it.

Tomorrow is a Big Day in Moll Towers - I'm having an ultrasound to see if bad things are happening inside me, and DH is off to the Docs to arrange sperm count shenanigans.. FX there's nothing serious wrong with either of us.

Ooh new people - hello all Xmas Smile love the Santa hat smileys

rache "babies are expensive toys" - love it Xmas Wink being serious I'm a bit in denial about the cost- although it makes me feel better to think all my time spent working and not getting pg at least means a bit more £ for our sprog (that's unless we spend it all on Xmas gifts which feels quite possible at the mo)

navis176 · 05/12/2012 19:22

Oh and welcome bottlered and mulberry!! Here's hoping this thread gives us all a load of good luck Xmas Smile

navis176 · 05/12/2012 19:20

Rache - I agree - best not to think about the cost - sure it'll all sort itself out!!
