IQ that's great! So happy for you that DH is home
MyDaydream sorry about AF, on to the next cycle - positive thinking all the way
Well just wanted to check in to tell you all about my clinic visit really. I saw the consultant this afternoon, DH came too. It was certainly £175 very well spent indeed. He was incredibly knowledgeable about PCOS, and he explained what the latest research was etc etc. He spoke at length about how PCOS isn't really to do with your ovaries at all but rather a problem that causes cysts on your ovaries as a symptom IYSWIM. Apparently the latest thinking is that it is all to do with insulin. Anyway don't want to bore you silly with the science of it so I'll get straight to the ttc relevant bits.
He told me that miscarriage rates for women with PCOS are 30-40% (as opposed to 15% for women who don't have it) and again this is thought to be due to problems related to insulin. He also said that egg quality is an issue, especially with late ovulation.
Anyway, long story short he has prescribed Metformin (a drug which is primarily used for diabetics apparently) which I have started on today, and he has given me Clomid to start on CD2 of next cycle if we don't manage it this time around (in addition to the metformin). He also said that I should stay on the metformin until at least 12 weeks if when I do get pg again.
I can't tell you how wonderful it is to have spoken with someone who knows what they are talking about and who was so positive about my chances of conceiving (and holding on to) our next baby. I was not expecting him to be able to give us a plan of action that could start so soon, without hundreds of tests etc but as I had already been diagnosed a couple of years ago by a different private consultant where we used to live (I brought him a copy my previous notes) he said that it would be unnecessary. I was so relieved - I hate blood tests....
So here we are - plan is metformin this cycle - he hopes it will start to work immediately so I should have ovulation at a reasonably normal time (he reckons in about 10 days time which would be CD20, much more normal than previously), then Clomid and Metformin next time around if unsuccessful, with a scan on CD10 to monitor the effect of the Clomid. Then a scan at 6.5 weeks when pg to check all is well.
Oh and one last thing - he was very pro Bvit complex...
but I may stop the agnus castus in case it interferes with anything.
and breathe......so sorry that was such an essay!
Lots of love to everyone
