Hi people,

Hope you're getting some answers, Cheese.

I have tried to ring the consultant but she's not in until the afternoon. I left my number and hopefully she'll ring me back. I spoke to the Fetal Medicine midwife, who wasn't especially helpful. She said I could have a CVS now, which has a 1 in 50 risk of mc, or wait until 16 weeks for the amnio, which has a 1 in 150 risk factor. She was horribly patronising, clearly didn't know anything about my past history and refused to tell me my exact results or which doctor had the lowest rate of miscarriage. She was doing that horrible treacly "I am so sympathetic" voice and explaining as though I was 4 years old. "Now you see, if 10 women all had a risk rate of 1 in 10, then 9 of them would have perfectly healthy babies" - oh really? You don't say! Gosh, I hadn't worked that out for myself in the 14 hours since I found out from Triage what your cryptic message meant! "Now, you need to go away and think about all your options and discuss them at home" - what do you think I've been doing all night?

Sorry, slight rant there. I was also thrown because I hadn't realised that the blood tests were analysed at RIE, which is the hospital where Thea died, and it was a RIE MW who called me. I've been going to St John's instead, and it just seems to me that every time RIE gets involved in anything they fuck it up. I want the consultant to organise an amnio at St John's, but if it turns out that it would be quicker to go to RIE then I guess I'll have to.

I don't really have a clue what I'll do if the test comes back positive. I'll cross that bridge if I have to - and maybe I can stay safely on this side!

too I have been thinking of you all night and added you to my prayers (just incase they work). I do really understand how you are feeling, I am awaiting my DNA results this week that will tell me if I have a 1 in 4 chance of this baby having Thomas's condition. However, I entered this pregnancy knowing the potential risk. You have had an awful shock. So hope a plan is put in place for you today.
cheese I cant believe that you are taking yet another blow, my heart goes out to you. Really hope that you get some answers today. Sending both you and too super strength.
angel 2 weeks today!!! How bloody wonderful.
Hello to everyone else Smile

ciwi · 04/10/2011 09:26

Hi girls, I haven't been around over the last couple of days, been working long days at work so haven't had chance to get on.
too I am sorry that you are facing this uncertainty now, it's just not fair, we all have enough to worry about without other things being mixed into the equation. Have you tried to ring your consultant this morning? surely he/she will understand your need for further information asap x
cheese what were your numbers? I have hypothyroidism and as long as you are aware of it and treat it it doesn't affect the pregnancy. I am sure it's a similar thing with hyper. Hope you get answers today also x

shakeyjake · 04/10/2011 09:23

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 03/10/2011 21:28

Oh Cheese . I don't know what that means, but I hope the hospital/consultant will say it's going to be okay. I wish there was someone up there who would just go okay, enough's enough, let's leave them alone now!

CheeseandGherkins · 03/10/2011 20:59

I had a call from the gp and looks like I'll be calling the hospital tomorrow, they checked my thyroid with TSH, T4 and Thyroid perodoxaise antibodies which came up abnormal. I got the actual numbers and have been googling but I don't really know what do think. Dr said they will decide what to do but I'm really worried. It's something to do with hyperthyrodism, the list of complications includes stillbirth... At least I heard back tonight though. I'm seeing the consultant on Friday if I can't speak to anyone before then too.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 03/10/2011 20:51

Thanks guys. I'm just not managing to think positively. I feel like I've used up all my being brave and positive already. It hurts too much to think that it might be ok, because I don't know that and I might cheer up only to be told for certain that it's not ok. Does that make sense? DH is being very brave, although he has cried a bit too. I've discovered a whole section on MN devoted to antenatal tests/choices - who knew, eh? I seem to keep on finding the sad parts of this website.

MelMal · 03/10/2011 20:22

Too just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you and hoping that everything turns out ok. Stupid saying try and stay positive but hopefully the odds will work for you. Lots of love and hugs xx

big hi to all not mentioned my brain is like a bucket with holes!!!!!!!!!

razzdazz · 03/10/2011 18:25

Oh too, I just dont no what to say to you. Life really is so very unfair. How is hubby coping?? I had an amnio when I was pregnant with Thomas, it was all so surreal I was totally numb and felt nothing. No problems afterwards though (from the amnio anyway). Are they going to give you another scan??? The choices we all make during our pregnancies are so very individual and so I dont feel it would be much help to tell you what I would do. Sending you and your DH hugs and positive vibes and of course praying for the best.
Take care of each other.

CheeseandGherkins · 03/10/2011 18:21

Too I can't imagine how difficult it must be for you right now and you really don't deserve it. If you decide to go for the amnio could you go private as I think the results would be in sooner, I know at the place I linked to they have preliminary results after just a few days and do the amnio on the same day as they find a problem. I guess check the miscarriage rate by the person carrying it out too as they do vary.

I suppose one problem would be if you do have to wait a few weeks that you'll be even further on and that would be worse having to make any decisions then. I just hope it's good news for you.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 03/10/2011 18:17

Pretty sure will have amnio. They didn't check for nasal bone, no - or at least, no one mentioned it. I'm 14+4, so they might not be able to redo the nuchal test. I'm in Edinburgh, so London is a bit far.

I'm not ok. I don't know what to do if it's positive, and I can't stand the thought of waiting for an amnio date and then for the results to come back, while worrying if I'll miscarry as a result of the amnio. I also can't stand not knowing, and having to spend the rest of the pregnancy wondering.

Bluetinkerbell · 03/10/2011 18:10

oooh Too you could really do without all that hassle now! have you made your mind up already whether you would do an amnio yes or no? big hugs for you! keep us up to date! we're all here to support you! Look at it this way 9 in 10 for a perfect baby without Down's!

OP posts:
CheeseandGherkins · 03/10/2011 18:05

Too Massive hugs, how are you feeling? Do you think you'll have an amnio? Did they check for nasal bone etc at your scan? Not sure exactly how many weeks you are now but you could opt for a second opinion at www.fetalmedicine.com/fmc/ if you're anywhere near London, they are amazing and also do amnios (they have a lower risk than nearly everywhere else from them too iirc).

janedoe25 · 03/10/2011 18:04

too hope you are ok?

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 03/10/2011 18:00

1 in 10 risk of Down's. The nuchal measurement was fine - it was about 2.2, which is perfectly normal, so it must have been something in the blood test. I have to call back tomorrow to discuss amniocentesis.

janedoe25 · 03/10/2011 17:59

too I hope you find out what the call was for, please don't worry.
