Help - A 9wk old baby and desperately want to get pg again... is this normal??!

Newmummy2010 · 08/09/2010 22:32

I've recently given birth to a gorgeous little bubby, but am totally desperate to be pg again.

It took over a year to conceive #1. i'm over the world to be a mummy and can't believe my luck. Not sure if urgency is due to this or baby hormones...

Not even sure how we can get pg as I'm BF and it seems BF is 99% effective contraceptive. Seems like unless i stop, its going to be impossible. ;-( but won't stop feeding yet, as its important to me to look after bubby.

DH is v understanding but DTD is not easy, had forceps delivery and episotiomy, so still uncomfortable and finding it diff to become a temptress to tempt hubby to jump me as DTD is painful and he works long hrs and not sleeping cos of bubby!

Anyone in a similar situ / advice would be much appreciated... Am i going mad??!

Big thanks x

mouseymouse, that's EXACTLY the stage I'm at! 12 week old, been sleeping really well for a week, and, having declared "never again" loudly to anyone who'd listen, I'm now wistfully thinking about a little sibling! Bonkers!

Then again, like the OP, time's a-ticking on.

Is it always the hormones though? Its just I hated being pregnant with ds (dc2) but was unreasonably broody following his birth. I mean desperate for another. He is 7 months now and it hasnt left me at all. We've decided to ttc. Smile. Sorry to hijack but 7 months later its hardly hormones still?

ilovesprouts · 10/09/2010 17:07

are you mad ..its the hormones :)

Carikube · 10/09/2010 17:05

I have heard tales of there being a "broodiness" hormone that kicks in about 7 wks after birth; don't know if it's true... We decided to TTC about 4 months after DD1 was born (she was also forceps & epi) and lo and behold there are 13.5 months between DD1 and DD2 and I'm loving it (and I delivered DD2 on G&A only and not a forcep in sight Smile). This time round I felt broody about 24 hours after DD2 was born though after a few days like today with both of them screaming acts as quite an effective contraceptive Grin

I dunno. C-sections aren't all a barrel of laughs! Took me about a week before I was well enough to walk the five minutes to the hospital shop with DP. Couldn't wear jeans because they rubbed against the scar. Got an infection which made it really smell like rotting flesh and made me really self-conscious and uncomfortable and now still have to apply cream to it 4 months later. Also, dunno if it's related, but I still looked heavily pregnant 6 weeks after giving birth. But yeah, I was comfortably having sex a couple of weeks after she was born and am secretly pleased that "down there" hasn't been affected by having a baby.

But I thought I was crazy, it's good to know it's normal! DD is 4 months old now and it was literally about two weeks ago that I stopped feeling desperately broody (and that's only cause I was worried about my period not arriving and it suddenly dawned on me how terrifying it would be to have another baby so soon). And I totally did the "wanting to become a midwife" thing too. Even rang a few universities to enquire about places. Blush And ranted to my HV when she said it's recommended I wait at least a year for the c-sec scar to fully heal before getting pg again.

Hotsprocket - you poor thing, hope appointment goes well, flippin episotiomies, I'm wishing they'd given me the emergency caesarean I nearly had, Would have none of this bother! ;-)

Lol - thanks for the explanation. Not sure if its usual MN lingo or not - just new to me!

HotSprocket · 09/09/2010 20:57

I saw the doctors when dd was 12 wks. My problem is a bit different because basically the midwife did too many stitches, so has left me with a very small opening Blush I know it's not going to get better by itself so I just went to docs as soon as I realised there was a problem. I'm still waiting for my hospital appointment, but i think it should be in the next few months.

Newmummy2010 · 09/09/2010 20:23

Thanks everyone

hotsprocket, when I had 6wk check up, Doc said my stiches had been done very well, but there was scar tissue - not sure what she meant, should have probed her more.

Out of interest how long was it before you saw your GP for gynae referral? Concious I'm going to relax TTC#2, but want to be armed with the facts because time is an issue due to my age Sad

And yep nospringflower DTD = doing the deed, sorry if this isn't MN lingo, I'm new to this!!

I felt exactly like you after DD1 waited until she was 9 m to TTC and there's 18 months between them.

If you are exclusively breatfeeding your periods might not come back for a while, I had to drop feeds when DD3 was 11 months or so to get my periods back to ttc no 4.

Good luck close age gaps are hard but great fun.

DinahRod · 09/09/2010 19:43

doing the deed, I assumed?

Nospringflower · 09/09/2010 19:19

What does DTD stand for? I seriously cant work it out and its bugging me!!

yummytummy · 09/09/2010 19:10

i agree, def hormones. however i had similar ie episiotomy and forceps and when i saw the gp and gynae physio they said it can be normal to experience pain on dtd as it can sometimes take up to a year for the tissues to totally heal properly.(obv this may not be true for u)

HotSprocket · 09/09/2010 19:05

Agree with Northernlurker about the episiotomy pain. I had one and the stitches were buggered up.

I went to the doctor and she has referred me back to the hospital. I think best to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

LittleSilver · 09/09/2010 19:02

I felt exactly the same. Much to my chagrin couldn't get pg until I stopped bf (though really OP, it's NOT 99%) effective. But I would have loved a closer gap. Hey ho, I'm very grateful for the babies I have.

Northernlurker · 09/09/2010 18:50

idst???

Sounds like some sort of cult.......should be 'midst'!!

Northernlurker · 09/09/2010 18:50

The episiotomy may be the issue - but you don't have to put up with that indefinately. If it carries on hurting go and see your GP (make an appointment with a female one if you prefer) and get the ball rolling for a hospital referral. There's no reason in this day and age for women to be permanently scarred by childbirth. Oh and welcome to our idst Smile

Newmummy2010 · 09/09/2010 18:42

Hi everyone - thanks for all the advice, yup sounds like those naughty hormones are to blame.

Feeling slightly better that this has happened to other people too.

Northernlurker like the analagy about doughnuts - I've always had a sweet toothSmile and yep using lube. As we've only had sex twice (once with the lube) and there was little improvement to the pain, not sure if its getting easier yet. Time will tell hopefully. I had an episotiomy due to forceps delivery, so think this maybe to blame unfortunately.

From a new MN'er, thanks again for all the support and lots of luck to everyone x

I wanted to be pregnant again right after i had dd, probably lasted about 2 months. I remember telling my friend who has 2 dc and her just giving me a 'look'.

She is 4 months now and i still know i want more someday but not for a long long time.

mousymouse · 09/09/2010 09:51

I had this, was about 2 weeks after dd slept though the night... feelings went away quickly with the sleep regression a month later :)

summery · 09/09/2010 09:49

Can I just say I am NOT a midwife Grin

Actually the thought of doing what they do makes me feel queasy, I was completely set on training to be one though after my ds was born! (for a few weeks)

DinahRod · 09/09/2010 08:17

hairytriangle, dh's cousin had a girl and then twin girls, all within a year. They are also going to be in the same school year. She says the girls are going to go through life with people working out when their parents had sex and look faintly appalled Grin

Northernlurker · 08/09/2010 23:27

It's normal to want another baby when the one you have is so yummy - kind of like doughnuts Grin

BUT - You need to give your body a little break and you need to let both you and dh have time to enjoy your daughter for a few months. Two babies in a year would be very, very hard work for your body and it's not actually how we are designed to reproduce. If it happens, it happens - but if I were you I would leave it a few months at least. Also - sex shouldn't be painful - is the discomfort improving over time and are you using plenty of lubricant? Even if you don't usually it can be helpful for sex after childbirth.

seashore · 08/09/2010 23:19

Agree it's hormones, I wanted to be pregnant (and give birth again!) instantly after just giving birth to ds 14 mths.

ShowOfHands · 08/09/2010 23:17

I know somebody who had 4 under 1.

Twins and then twins again 11.5 months later. She's remarkably sane.
