So how likely is it?

DH & I had unprotected sex a week ago. It was right at the end of my period, the last "bitty" loss day. I thought that the timing meant it was a low-risk time for conception.

However, I have been exhausted the last few days, needing the loo a lot and feeling quite tender in my lower abdomen.

So how likely is it that I am PG? Is it my mind causing the symptoms or my ovaries?!

I would like to TTC dc3, so it wouldn't be unhappy news, but we had been planning to wait until after Christmas.
Can't talk to my RL friends about this as most are TTC, and some have been having a bit of trouble. I don't want to be insensitive towards them by sharing my accidental worries.

Absolutely, everyone is different and that's a very important point, because it's also why misinformation like "You always ov on CD14" still flies about and confuses people.

But you still do need an egg!

Beckie, you said end of cycle; which does usually refer to your luteal phase, with CD1 being counted as the first day of bleeding. Remember ovulation can be tricky to pinpoint, even if you are temping, checking cervical position and Cm and opks as well, it can still be hard to identify. I hope that helps clear it up?

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 30/08/2010 12:07

Shall we all just put it down to everybody is different, and TTC (and concieving when not trying to too) is a bit weird and there is no clear cut answer!?

sorky · 30/08/2010 11:25

No Becky you are right you didn't say that.

What you said was you got pregnant at the end of your cycle, which implies, but does not explicitly mean, it was immediately prior to your period.

That is why I included the information about delayed ovulation.

beckie90 · 30/08/2010 10:27

and thats what i said in the original post if you look not 2 days before a period. but 2 days before a bleed, because i was on the pill. the lady after said you cannot get pregnant before your period, but i never said that

beckie90 · 30/08/2010 10:25

yes but i came off the pill when i missed it equalling the bleed (withdrawel bleed i know) i came off it as me and my partner split up then 4 weeks later had a totally normal heavy period once again. but when i was 16 i know 4 a fact i use to ovulate not that long before periods as i got loads of stretchy mc accompanied by pain, if that wasnt ovulating i dont know what it was. but now i do ovulate more to the normal time after coming off the mirena coil.
can also say the same happend to my aunty with both her kids, and also my mother

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 30/08/2010 09:40

PS, Good to see you back on the threads AC and that your DH is finally coming round! Grin

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 30/08/2010 09:37

Beckie I think you're getting confused about where in your cycle you got pg because you were on the pill when it happened.

The pill suppresses the release of the egg from the ovary, thus meaning you can not get pg. However if you miss a pill that little egg can pop out and get itself fertilised. The period you have on the pill isn't a proper period, it's more of a place holder.

The pill was invented by men who thought women would want to keep getting their period like normal.

So when you missed your pill a couple of days before your 'period' and got pg, it wasn't your real period but the pill induced one. Had you not been on the pill and got pg on an ordinary cycle you would have had the normal 2WW between ovulation and your missed AF.

I hope this helps and puts this argument to rest. I did see a post a while back that explained it a bit better than myself, but I have no idea where sorry.

AmI How are you getting on?

hairytriangle · 29/08/2010 19:00

Hello MC I'm well, how are you? she's fab, and yes, very wise.

beckie90 · 29/08/2010 17:03

well thats were my scan put me and thats the only time id had unprotected sex after missing a pill, i had 2 periods while i was pregnant and didnt find out till i was 2 month

sorky · 29/08/2010 14:32

You can get pg from sex at the end of your period because sperm can survive for up to about 5 days in a fertile environment.

You would need to be ovulating quite early for this to occur though

sorky · 29/08/2010 14:29

Sorry but you cannot get pg just before your period. It is biologically impossible.

You can however ovulate later than you normally would which may seem like it's before your period, but in actual fact your cycle is longer that month, due to later ovulation.

In order for a pg to stay put you need a LP of about 10 days.

The changes in your hormones make it impossible to Ovulate a couple of days before your period.

You can ovulate from either ovary in a month but it's very very rare.

beckie90 · 29/08/2010 14:03

haha its ok lol.

AmandaCooper · 29/08/2010 10:15

Oh sorry Becky I have mixed you up with the OP! Bloody iPhone view getting me into trouble.

AmandaCooper · 29/08/2010 10:13

If you've gotten pregnant at the end of your period before then your chance of being pregnant now is greater. I'm a bit Confused you thought it was low risk then. When is your next period due?

beckie90 · 29/08/2010 09:59

arr im soo thick this is the 1st time ive actually read into conception and stuff as i never really thought about concieving at my age, ye i read that you can ovulate twice in a month its strange, ive always seemed to ovulate around the time of my period with my 1st i was on the pill but got pregnant 2 days before my bleed. last year i got pregnant at the end of my period but i lost the baby when i was 9 weeks

AmandaCooper · 28/08/2010 23:02

I like the sound of your acupuncturist, Hairy. She sounds very wise to me ha ha! How are you anyway?

hairytriangle · 28/08/2010 21:10

I was told by my acupuncturist that rarely - very very rarely - people conceive at the end of their period. Very, very rare, though she said.

Lynli · 28/08/2010 21:06

ovulating means realeasing an egg, without one you cannot make a baby.

You can ovulate twice in a month.

The egg and the sperm live for a certain amount of time, so the sperm could be present before you ovulate. The egg could be present before the sperm.

When I had an Mc at 11 weeks, I later found out I was still pregnant and the fetus was 7 weeks. She is DD1 so I ovulated and concieved when I was already pregnant.

takingtheplunge · 28/08/2010 20:45

Well, that sounds like progress if you've managed to have an unprotected shag and DH hasn't collapsed into a terrified heap! Glad to hear he's coming round to the idea. We're trying again at the mo...altho not at this very moment obviously Smile that would be crap sex if I were MNing during!

beckie90 · 28/08/2010 20:41

only speaking what i read on the internet. and what happend to me before, as i know i ovulated mid month. but got pregnant nearly 2 week later

AmandaCooper · 28/08/2010 20:29

Hi Pipoca yes things are coming along, I just posted in the waiting thread that I can see it happening quite soon (sooner than we think if I caught after our CD5 antics lol). How are you doing? Are you trying or not trying at the moment (don't mean literally this minute obviously!)

takingtheplunge · 28/08/2010 20:18

As I understand it it's a 25% chance of conception even if sperm and egg are in the right place at the right time and 5% chance of conception at other times as you don't really know when you ovulated and sperm can hang around for up to 5 days so there's a chance an egg might be released later and be fertilised....IYSWIM. How's it going AC, got any further with DH and ttc plans? (It's Pip btw) xx

AmandaCooper · 28/08/2010 19:54

How can the sperm fertilise an egg if there's no egg because you haven't ovulated?

beckie90 · 28/08/2010 19:40

and just googled it again, 25% chance when ovulating and 5% when your not ovulating, so yes u can, but like i said not likely

beckie90 · 28/08/2010 19:35

i read on a thread that someone else posted the other day links to an other site that its possible to get pregnant at anytime even if your not ovulating its unlikely but can happen, for a start it happend to me i know i wasnt ovulating, when i was at the end of my cycle. its not totaly unknown, but like i said unlikely.
