Stephen Davies' Hacking Timbuktu - he's a friend of mine, but I don't think I'm biased, they are great adventure stories written for boys.

brightspark2 · 18/06/2010 05:58

I can highly recommend Young Sherlock Holmes - Death Cloud by Andrew Lane - it's about Sherlock when he was 14 and how he started solving mysteries and turned out the way he did - my son read it and wouldn't put it down!!

Apparently there are at least two more to come too.

ds 9 is reading "just Henry" by Michelle Magorian. I thought that it might be a bit beyond him but he is completely gripped. I read some of it out loud to him and I think it wonderful too.

AlaskaNebraska · 09/06/2010 22:43

holes deffo too old
are on i am david atm

pointydog · 09/06/2010 22:42

groosham grange by horowitz

exexpat · 09/06/2010 22:33

I always seem to recommend Louis Sacher in these circumstances.... He's best known for Holes, which might be a bit too old; Marvin Redpost series is good, or the Wayside School series might be just right, or Dogs Don't Tell Jokes, or Someday Angeline.

DS also enjoyed lots of Antony Horowitz at that age, and the Joshua Doder series of books starting with A Dog Called Grk.

singersgirl · 09/06/2010 19:39

DS2 has read the first volume of the Twig trilogy of the Edge Chronicles and is now on the secon. He's also just read Skulduggery Pleasant which he thought was v. funny - but again, if yours hates fantasy and magic these will be non-starters.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 08/06/2010 11:20

Kevin Crossley Holland - The Seeing Stone series.
Philip Pullman- Clockwork etc (he wrote quite a lot of good stuff before the Northern Lights trilogy - after which (imo) he lost the plot...)
T H WHite- The Sword in the Stone

If I were you I would get hold of the Ultimate Children's Book guide- very useful.

LLKH · 08/06/2010 10:35

Diana Wynne Jones is usually fun. Unless he totally hates any and all magic.

RedZora · 07/06/2010 15:41

This one is excellent for boys who liked wimpy kid

helyg · 07/06/2010 15:33

Mine went from Horrid Henry to Mr Gum.

pointissima · 07/06/2010 15:28

My 9 year-old boy is reading "just Henry" by Michelle Magorian and is completely gripped.

I love it too

iheartdusty · 19/05/2010 22:50

we are reading this and loving it

liliputlady · 10/05/2010 12:37

My D likes dipping in to the Roman Mysteries series, in between other reads. We got it from the Book People.
Has anyone mentioned a Series of unfortunate events?

claudine9 · 02/05/2010 22:02

Try A Million Footsteps - it's a proper adventure story about two boys travelling across France to find their little sister - no monsters or dragons or wizards or witches, just good old fashioned stuff!

Whippet · 06/04/2010 09:30

AB - He might be too young for the Alex Rider series, but the Diamond Brother series are aimed at a younger target audience IIRC. DS started these at 9 and gravitated onto the 'older' AH books more recently (now 10.5)

AnzoneioBanderas · 05/04/2010 14:08

yes too young for A h i think.

jjohnny and bomb looks great.
ds1 liked cosmic and Millions - think d2 is too small

Demon headmaster series - Gillian Cross?

Diamond Brothers series - Antony Horowitz?

(Is Alex Rider too difficult at the moment?)

bobbiewickham · 04/04/2010 20:49

Oh yes, maybe a Pratchett fan if he likes history.

Johnny and the Dead and Johnny and the Bomb are v good.

posieparker · 04/04/2010 20:48

and look at this review!!
This review is from: The Enemies of Jupiter: Roman Mysteries 7 (The Roman Mysteries) (Paperback)
One of the best so far!Im nine years old and LOVED IT! The four detectives(Nubia,Lupus,Johnathon and Flavia)go to Rome because the Emperor Titus has a secret misson for them:to find who opened the Pandora's Box. But Johnathon is distracted by a secret mission of his own! He is trying to get his supposeingly 'Dead' mother to meet his father who is there to cure pationts with the fever. But then everything goes terribly wrong...

posieparker · 04/04/2010 20:47

Must be some stories about Vikings, not fantasy, or other historical adventures. Apparently there's a serious called "Roman Mysteries"..well that's what my Amazon search pulled up!!

florenceuk · 04/04/2010 20:43

There are three of these: Johnny and the Bomb

and two of these Solomon Snow

Also Cosmic recommended on here - DS loved it.

Did he like Percy Jackson - DS has gone on to read Rosemary Sutcliff's version of the Battle of Troy and Odysseus on the basis of these!

AnzoneioBanderas · 04/04/2010 20:38

you see he is too cool for fantasy

ds3 he likes fnatasty

ds2 says that teh big head one i linked to is as funy as wimpy kid
