Kipper, Chip and Biff???

And why in God's name does Wilf and Wilma's (two more great names) mother wear thumbs as earrings???

At least the black kids have got names now. It used to be all a bit Hollywood-in-the-50s - the blacks always in supporting roles, smiling on benignly as the whites got to do all the fun stuff. I used to make names up for them (Alfie and Emily...don't ask me why?!).

Biff, Kipper and Chip - always makes me think of Home & Away...

PortAndLemon · 08/07/2009 19:38

Sometimes in American families where they name the eldest son after the father he gets nicknamed "Chip" (as in "chip off the old block") rather than "Junior". So perhaps the father is David Senior and Chip is David Junior?

linspins · 08/07/2009 19:12

It's true what gossipmonger says about the names. I think it's in the teachers handbook!??

Whatever happened to Jennifer Yello Hat, Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat and the house with three corners? They were ace.

squeaver · 28/05/2009 14:51

I knew this is what this thread would be about

MrsMerryHenry · 28/05/2009 14:48

I will be keeping my eyes out for her definately thanks MrsMerry.
Wilmas mum is actually in the book we have just now but she has hoops in.

Weegiemum · 28/05/2009 13:35

I am glad my kids use storyworld and not ORT! I am muchly enjoying the story of Bingo and the Jelly at the moment!

MrsMerryHenry · 28/05/2009 13:31

Ineedacleaner - look in 'Egg Fried Rice'.

DS was reading another book with her in it yesterday but she had different earrings.

I went in to help at nursery when ds2 was new there and it was one of the first stories the teacher read to the children.

I was as as you all! But she read the story and they were called Barbara, David and Christopher!!

(If I was called Barbara I think I would be called Biff! Tis cool!)

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 27/05/2009 21:53

Is Chip not shor for Charles?

NationalFlight · 27/05/2009 21:08

that would be 'Dave'.

NationalFlight · 27/05/2009 21:07

Chip isn't short for David. No way

MichelleObama · 27/05/2009 21:02

Gossipmonger - how do you know this?

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 27/05/2009 19:36

I am desperate for another book with Wilmas mum now for the earrings gee whizz I really need to get a life.
Just sent dd for her reading book and was (sadly enough) disappointed she wasn't in this one.

TsarChasm · 27/05/2009 19:26

They all look so androgynous and the names don't give any clue unless you know what they're short for (which I didn't).

Floppy makes my trigger finger itch.

TsarChasm · 27/05/2009 19:23

I take it you are going through a Kipper, Chip and Biff range of books home from school? If so, I feel your pain.

We have (mercifully) moved on. Even dd got fed up with highly irritating Floppy messing stuff up.

GossipMonger · 27/05/2009 19:20

tis true!

GossipMonger · 27/05/2009 15:40

Kipper is short for Christopher

Biff is short for Barbara and

Chip is short for David.

cazzybabs · 27/05/2009 15:38

Honestly the reason for B, Ch and K was so no-one reading them would have the same name...but other than that I have no idea why they choose those names

The creepy man with glasses and a beard who appears in most of the books is a self-portrait of the illustrator.

cazzybabs · 27/05/2009 15:36

Anyway they appear more in the parallel books - they strike me as sort of add ons from a later stage.

I am not an expert in ORT though and wait to be corrected

cazzybabs · 27/05/2009 15:35

i don't know about Wilf and Wilma - maybe they ran out of ideas...they are not that popular though (well I guess Wilf is coming back into fashion)
