Good 'chapter books' for a 5yo - Milly Molly Mandy?

DD has just really got into longer books with chapters. She's 5 but has a very advanced vocabulary and could easily cope with books above her age (although she's a bit sensitive - she found The BFG a bit disturbing, though that may have just been because I was unsure about it). So, any good suggestions for books? We're reading The Enchanted Wood at the moment but it's getting on my nerves - just stop going up the bloody tree if you're going to encounter problems every time, FFS Someone suggested Milly Molly Mandy but I've never read any of those - are they any good for a 5yo? Any other suggestions welcome, thanks!

are milly molly mandy books still about?

I am going on the search! They used to be my favourite when I was little - so much so that, its what my nickname became... milly!

hehe useless post sorry!

Pippi Longstocking - still very 'fresh' and funny

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 17/11/2008 08:47

No suggestions but rofl at "just stop going up the bloody tree"

pooka · 17/11/2008 08:21

MMM, My Naughty little sister, Magic Faraway Tree, Secret Seven, Pippi Longstocking.

All been mentioned before, but all great chapter/short story books.

DS loves the Famous Five - we are on book 10, only another eleven to go, and he can't get enough of them! I always add in a little bit of feminism when Julian's going on about the inadequacies of girls, mind you

My 5 and 6 year olds are really enjoying the Little House on the Prairie books at the moment

elkiedee · 16/11/2008 23:26

Beverly Cleary's books about Ramona Quimby

ceciliaaherne · 16/11/2008 23:04

The Tiara Club books- about princesses at boarding school.
The Magic Kitten books- about a magic panther from a secret kingdom who disguises himself as a kitten and performs magic to help the girls who look after him (a different girl every book)

Can't remember any more detail and don't really want to go trailing through her room for author names at the moment.

Thanks everybody, loads of suggestions there! I was obsessed with The Secret Seven when I was younger but I hadn't thought of them for DD's age. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is a great idea! I wondered about James & The Giant Peach but don't like the idea of reading about a child's parents dying or about the aunts being cruel to him - is that silly?!

Oh, loving books with chapters - DS has just got into them. His current faves are:

Faraway Tree (good cliffhangers at the end of each chapter)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

James and the Giant Peach

Worst Witch

EachPeachPearMum · 16/11/2008 21:21

Peter Pan
I loved MMM!
Original Winnie the Pooh
Moomins
Pippi- was my favourite
Olga da Polga
Paddington

My naughty little sister - old but good.

MMM was a bit dull when I was little...

rebelmum1 · 16/11/2008 21:14

My friend has recommended Pippy Longstocking too as a good read.

rebelmum1 · 16/11/2008 21:13

Reading the Faraway Tree at the mo 'I say girls there's something rather queer up here!' we're really loving it, will be moving onto roald dahl next, fantastic mr fox is good and danny champion of the world is my favourite story of all time. Have read Milly Molly Mandy and that's good although I get a bit bored of saying 'presently' all the time.

clam · 16/11/2008 20:57

Has MMM been up-dated? I remember thinking it was a bit old-fashioned, and that was 40 years ago.

Dottoressa · 16/11/2008 20:56

Clever Polly is a good suggestion. They are old, but definitely not dated!

Dottoressa · 16/11/2008 20:55

I really, really like old-fashioned books, but I would like to stuff MMM's patty pans down the neck of her striped dress. If she isn't enough to make any child want to say "yah, boo", then I don't know what is.

My DD is four, so I don't have any great suggestions yet (she's obsessed with the Faraway Tree).

However, I do remember enjoying Amelia Jane at that age. DS, now six, loved the Ghosthunters series when he was four/five. He and DD both like the Famous Five and Secret Seven.

clam · 16/11/2008 20:55

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf. (Catherine Storr)
Horrid Henry? (Frnacesca Simon)

duckyfuzz · 16/11/2008 20:55

my twin girls are nearly 5 and like MMM, also Gobbolino the witch's cat, george's marvellous medicine and some others - I got a puffin classics pack from the book people - its not on there at the moment, but they are a good place to look for collections of similar style books

pinkbubble · 16/11/2008 20:52

Oh yes, forgot the Worst Witch!

AnarchyAunt · 16/11/2008 20:51
