Hi my 6 year old DD is a very able reader however still likes pictures books. Doesn’t like chapter books. I wanted advice for what to get her to read . I would prefer longer picture books.
also need advice on how to move her on to chapter books.
she has read the hairy mclary, Julia Donaldson, dr Seuss,
May the moment she is enjoying a big box set of mr men and little miss books but I am wondering what next.
she has also recently got into dinosaurs and rejecting princess and kitten themes.

thanks.

My eldest preferred picture books for a long time, I think he was 7 and a half before he read a chapter book willingly, then he flipped between the two for a while. Now he reads every night to himself, and quite often can be found reading during the day.

My youngest has made the switch a bit younger but will still choose picture books at times. They like them for comfort I think.

Chapter books that have been popular here were Isadora moon, diary if a wimpy kid (literally flipped a switch in my youngest!), Beast Quest, Magic Faraway Tree, Ottoline, Tom Fletcher books, David Williams and 13 storey tree house

@User14379 may be daft question, but have you gone up the book bands - white and lime have chapters and take DD a little bit longer... As well as the officially book banded reading book series our library has some levelled series. Some to look for would be Blue or Red Bananas, there's also Race Ahead with Reading and Race Further with Reading, and Bloomsbury Young Readers.

I've also just remembered DD also likes a series called Unipiggle which is at the Isadora Moon.

It is hard when you have a younger one, I don't get the time she wants and I would like to do crafts with DD either.

Fairy Mummy series by Sophie Kinsella and the Horrid Henry books are good for this age group

User14379 · 16/10/2022 00:44

Thank you so much everyone. I appreciate all the suggestions. @CrabbyCat I do feel guilty at times as she wants to read to me but with a baby I find it difficult to give her my full attention for long.
I got her loads and loads of banded books and she loved those but now just whizzes past those.

I will look for the Claude books and isadora moon. Hadnt heard of princess in black either so will search for that. She doesn’t like princesses atm though

The Hotel Flamingo books are great and beautifully illustrated. My 7 year old also loves the Magic Faraway Tree séries and the Secret Seven books if that helps!

@User14379 DD did the hopping from book to book thing after few chapters for ages. She's gradually got much better, I think because her reading stamina now better matches her ambition. For her, getting her to finish books involved getting easier books, the Sally Rippin or Princess in Black books would be good for that or book banded books out the library. The Isadora Moon and Claude books DD are a bit longer and harder than those, and I'd say the Winnie chapter books as harder again as the vocabulary is trickier.

She still seemed to enjoy the chapters she did read, but it was a bit frustrating when I'd carefully hunted down books for her! If I'd had time to do it more often for longer (I have a younger DC who is a handful), I wonder whether sitting down with her to take it in turns to read pages would have helped with getting her to finish more.

Lauren Child's Clarice Bean books are great, if she liked Charlie and Lola?

Youkilledmyfatherpreparetodie · 15/10/2022 22:08

My 6 year old loves the Isadora Moon series. They are chapter books with lots of pictures.

User14379 · 15/10/2022 22:05

Too much book in that post 😅

User14379 · 15/10/2022 22:05

Thanks. Ok she seems to be hopping from book to book too so will pick up a book read a chapter or two and move to another book without finishing the first. She has no desire to finish the book. I am finding it a bit hard to keep her to a book.

i get all our books from a really wonderful second hand book shop I will keep my eyes out for these thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 15/10/2022 13:02

The Claude series
Daisy and the Trouble with... series

both chapter book series with lots of illustrations

randomsabreuse · 15/10/2022 12:58

Also Paddington.

randomsabreuse · 15/10/2022 12:57

Dragon Masters got my dragon obsessed daughter reading from not being keen. They have some pictures but are short chapter books. They do have American spellings which is ok but I had to explain.

Beatrix Potter and other illustrated classics like wind in the willows are worth a try.

User14379 · 15/10/2022 12:53

Thank you for the recommendations. She is enjoying her my naughty little sister books will look out for the others mentioned. She didn’t like Winnie the witch. And also reluctant to read the smaller Roald Dahl’s

CbCV · 15/10/2022 09:11

At 6 David Walliams got my daughter really into chapter books as they are interspersed with pictures and interesting looking text.

Wizzed through them all laughing her head off. And that stopped her seeing 'normal' size/shape books and thinking "no" if that makes sense?

Need to find second hand…. Peabody the detective books (3). Gerald Durrell s dinosaur adventure and around the world.

EwwSprouts · 03/10/2022 21:29

More grown up picture books
Paddington in the Garden
Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton Trent
The incredible book eating boy
Zoo - Anthony Browne
The book with no pictures

CrabbyCat · 03/10/2022 16:00

My DC both loved both Sally Rippin series, you be seencan get box sets of them cheaply on eBay if you keep searching for a few weeks. They have quite large text though, mine found them a much easier read than the sorts of series mentioned above.

pinklemonade84 · 03/10/2022 14:26

My little girl came home with a book in they Hey Jack series by Sally Rippin, it’s got 3 chapters and a few pictures along the way. It’s really ignited a new found love of reading for her, so I can’t wait to try her on some of these suggestions and the Billie B Brown series by Sally Rippin too 🙂

Buffysoldersister · 27/09/2022 11:35

I think there is a real gap here and someone could make a fortune from a really good series of 'grown up' picture books. My ds really liked the tree house books but they are hard to read with someone as more of a comic format. The shorter illustrated Roald Dahls is a good suggestion. You could also try Nate the Great, and the Narwhal and Jelly books (v odd but appealed to ds!). Getting slightly longer, the Mr Penguin books went down well here and I really enjoyed the worst witch as a kid although ds wasn't a fan.

mogtheexcellent · 27/09/2022 11:20

We moved from the jolly rogers picture books to the reading books. Winnie the with also have a series of reading books. Otherwise the Princess in Black and the Hilda graphic novels are great for this age.

But to be fair DD is 8 now and despite being an excellent reader, still likes to re read her picture books.

CrabbyCat · 18/09/2022 20:49

Allen Ahlberg's Happy Family series is a good bridge, it's longer than a picture book but shorter than most of the books listed above.

I also used various reading books series to help with this stage, as both DC read a lot and keeping them supplied with at the stage they still want shorter books is hard work. Our library has a few sets at about the right level, ones called red bananas, the Usborne Young Reading Series One, Race Ahead with Reading and then Race Further with Reading all had OK stories. If your library has book banded books, I used some of those with my DC for pleasure as well at this stage.

User1563 · 13/09/2022 12:21

She just started reading my naughty little sister and loves it. Will look out for the other recommendations too.
she likes reading to me rather than the other way around so I am looking for more titles which appeal to her.
thanks
