Chapter Books to be read to 4 year old boy

Sorry if this has been covered before.

I feel DS is on the cusp of moving on to having chapter books read to him at bedtime and am at a loss as to what to try. He's just turned four.

Mumsnet helped me with DD1 when I got to this stage and I feel well away with her but could do with some pointers for boys. Thank you all.

I don't like Horrid Henry.

I have mentioned this before several times, but if you can get hold of any Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf books do try them. Not remotely boy-specific but they are just so good and funny. Each chapter is a self-contained story, so I don't know if it counts as a chapter book. I would also have said that Captain Underpants is good for getting boys reading but would drive most people round the bend in terms of bedtime reading, it's like reading a comic.

Hi Elf, I started a thread on this last spring. Will try to link to it.

Some of the suggestions we tried were:

101 Dalmations (this was a bit hard going because the language is a bit outdated)

James and the Giant Peach (great success)

Jeremy James (we are reading this at the moment and I love it)

We have also enjoyed Akimbo books by Alastair McCall Smith, set in Africa.

Will watch this with interest - DS has just turned 4 too, and in the same situation.

There's quite a lot to choose from. There is Horrid Henry, Captain Underpants (not always parents choice but children love them!) and there is also a series called Books for Boys. I am a children's bookseller and sell all these (& more!) discounted. I'll pm you to tell you the name of the site as I don't think I can advertise on these discussions!
