What is the best children's book of all time? Any reason why?

Flambards
National Velvet
The Little Princess
The Secret Garden

As a child I used to get so engrossed in books that I didn’t hear people speaking to me. I remember my dm saying sharply. “Andante! Auntie Susan is speaking to you!”
I hadn’t heard a thing.
However much I’m enjoying a book now, that would never happen.

The Family at Redroofs - Enid Blyton
The Long Winter - Laura Ingalls Wilder
Charlotte Sometimes - Penelope Farmer
Back Home - Michelle Magorian
Find a Stranger Say Goodbye - Lois Lowry
The railway Children- E Nesbitt

Loved reading as a child and still reread all of the above.

@Nannyamc

Heidi. I did not have a grandfather and was so envious of her. I got an original edition for my 50th birthday.
I still have Heidi by my bed, in my sixties.

My favourites were and are the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome. Odd, as I have no interest in sailing and have never properly visited the Lake District, but I love them. There are 12 books and they're all great. If I had to pick one, it might be Winter Holiday, or it might be Pigeon Post.

Loved all the Noel Streatfield books. Party Frock was a particular favourite.

I really enjoyed historical fiction as a child. There were several lovely books by Gillian Avery, probably out of print now. The Elephant War was a particular favourite. Cynthia Harnett is probably also forgotten now, but I adored her books set in England in the 1400s.

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, by Judith Kerr (Meg and Mog, The Tiger Who Came to Tea). Read this when I was 11 or 12.

I was also very keen on Joan Aiken's book The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and its sequels. I was entranced by the idea of historical fiction set in an era that didn't happen - now a whole genre, alternative history. I am Scottish and as a child was wholeheartedly pro Stuart and anti Hanoverians, so a world where the Hanoverians were the villains and the Stuarts remained our ruling monarchs appealed to me enormously.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The Turbulent Term of Tike Tyler

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/11/2021 08:36

I had a book with three stories by Frances Hodgson Burnett, I think The Little Princess was my favourite of the three. I loved them all though.

Hopeisallineed · 01/11/2021 08:36

@TheSpiral yes, they are expensive now. I ended up buying the audio book for my kids as was much cheaper. They love it.

TheSpiral · 01/11/2021 08:34

@Hopeisallineed

Rebecca’s World
I have tried to buy that so many times and any available copy has always been silly money. I haven’t looked recently though, maybe I should!
TheSpiral · 01/11/2021 08:33

Famous Five mostly, then A Little Princess, then The Dark Is Rising. Although had you asked me aged six or seven I would have said Four to Doomsday, which was a novelisation of a Dr Who episode. Not sure why…
I also loved Children of Green Knowe.

PurBal · 01/11/2021 08:27

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Forgot to say mine. Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. I found it so magical. And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And the Outsiders by SE Hinton. If I was a kid when the Harry Potter books were released, then definitely would be on the list.

Another vote for The Faraway Tree. As an only child in the 50s, reading was my main pastime. So pleased my children and my grandchildren like books too.

nameyouwhat · 01/11/2021 06:27

Sorry meant to put moomins as well by Tove Jansson

nameyouwhat · 01/11/2021 06:26

"little grey men" by BB
"Charlotte Sometimes " by Penelope Farmer
magical storytelling at its best.

Galaxyinmypocket · 01/11/2021 06:23

hellcatspangle · 01/11/2021 06:20

jan pienkowski The Haunted House. I was a very neglected and abused child. I was sent to live temporarily with an Aunt who lived by the Cutty Sark. In the days when the council estate near the Ship was a shit hole and full of rubble. Next to the Cutty Sark was a book boat. I discovered that book im there. Had no money to buy it but went there daily to just sit on the floor and immerse myself. I was 5. How sad.

@Naz2009

The faraway tree by Enid blyton. The original story written around 1940. Not the adaptation version First read age 8/9, fell in love, as I drifted away into a fantasy land with each chapter. I still have my book, in my bedside draw next to me.
@Naz2009 100% agree 😍 My copy is so battered that it’s barely hanging together but I love the cover that’s on mine. I’ve just managed to track down a copy in much better condition and it’s now in my baby’s nursery bookcase in the hope that’s he’ll love it too 😊
YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 01/11/2021 06:02

Ballet Shoes and The Little White Horse for all the reasons @DoesHePlayTheFiddle has mentioned. Still my comfort books 30 years on and I assume it must be the same for my mum as she’s the one who handed me the copies like they were something really special. Thanks for this thread op, I have a strained relationship with my mum at the best of times so that’s a really nice memory you’ve just bought back.

polkadotpixie · 01/11/2021 05:53

I loved The Famous Five and The Rats of Nimh as a child. I was a teenager when Harry Potter came out but loved that too

StTherese · 01/11/2021 05:39

The original books by Enid Blyton :
The Faraway Tree
The Adventurous Four series
Famous Five
Malory Towers series
St Clares series
Brer Rabbit series
The Naughtiest Girl in the school
The Children of Willow Farm

Also Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr

As a young teen, we all used to read the Sweet Valley High books too.
