I volunteer in a primary school library, and we are about to come into some money due to commission earned from book fair sales. Our library is reasonably well stocked, but looking for suggestions as to what your Year 3 - 6 DC enjoy. Old favourites are very welcome, but I am particularly interested in relatively new books, which we probably don't have.

For a 6 yr old try this book The Wolf and the Goats written by Juned. Great message and not your usual children's story.....

I've just written and illustrated a new children's book for 3-6 year olds for Kindle and the Kindle app featuring a friendly new character called 'Obble'. He's quirky and cute, so no monsters here. Inspired by the likes of the Mr Men and Meg and Mog, my childhood favourites.
Anyway, I would love for anyone to take a look and see if 'Obble' is for their little one. The first book in the series is called 'Obble and the Mysterious Sneezes'. Feedback is also welcome.

Hi all,
For my Nutrition and Health degree I'm looking for books that will encourage pre-school and early years children to eat healthy. Books that are fun for children and get a clear message across.
Any ideas?

Thank you for any help

AmyCorn · 15/08/2019 16:19

There are some fantastic new books. David Walliams seems to entertain younger children very well.

OldPultney · 12/08/2019 19:55

The untold stories of a water dragon for the younger ones. Set in Scotland, a story about friendship and morals but also funny anecdotes such as what happens when a water dragon eats a curry to try and breathe fire.

Series of unfortunate events I agree is great, good for the older kids I would say

I write and illustrate a children's book series. The stories follow the big bad pirate Captain Cuthbert and his long suffering cat, Scat, whom I guarantee you will fall in love with. Captain Cuthbert on the other hand is bossy, greedy and selfish and always lands himself in trouble.

Just William books
More for the boys- there is a series of rugby books - rugby warrior, rugby heroes etc. They are ghost/mystery stories set in a rugby club. My 9 year old is riveted!

Probably too late, but David Almond books! The boy who swam with piranhas; skellig; the fire eaters. Brilliant.
Also Benjamin Piff - can't remember the full title - loved by my boys.
And the Charlie Bone series
ok I'll stop now...

witherwings · 03/04/2019 20:10

My 8 year old also likes books by Matt Haig and Alesha Dixon

witherwings · 03/04/2019 20:05

Can't remember authors for the following but they are all books my daughter likes but not too girly;
Wonder
Goldfish boy
Who let the Gods Out
Lemony snicker series
Harry Potter series (if you haven't already got them!)
The boy at the back of the class
The snow angel
Book of dust

Slightly more girl orientated;
Worst Witch Series
Anne of Green Gables series
Little house on the prairie
Murder most unladylike series
Polar bear explorers club series

Anything by David Walliams & David Baddiel
Books by Eva Ibbotson, Katherine Rundell, Michael Morpurgo, Emma Carroll.

What about classics like Swallows and Amazons, Heidi etc?

pollyhemlock · 03/04/2019 19:35

A few good recent authors writing for this age group: Katherine Rundell, Abi Elphinstone, Ally Sherrick, Ali Sparkes, Emma Carroll, Sam Gayton, Rob Lloyd Jones, Helen Peters. Check out the online magazine Books for Keeps booksforkeeps.co.uk. They have some good reviews/ suggestions. Also book lover jo.wordpress.com, which is a very informative blog.

I have tried with audio CDs, Laura. But I won't be buying anymore! If there is more than one disc in a box, this is inevitably left at home in the CD player, never to be seen again! I really thought they were a good idea, but it just hasn't worked out for us.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I am going to place my order on Sunday, so looking forward to it!

Would you consider getting the popular books as audio books for slower/ struggling readers. Our local library has such a small selection it would be great if school had these too.

Infamy · 03/04/2019 18:20

Tapper twins is popular with my DS, Y3

PopGoesTheWeaz · 03/04/2019 18:18

Rooftoppers is a beautiful book

PopGoesTheWeaz · 03/04/2019 18:17

The amulet series and the airbender series are good age appropriate graphic novels. What about skulduggery pleasant? Jennifer bell has a series - first one is a crooked six pence - that mine reallyb enjoyed (me too) that is sort of Harry potter esq (mash up of magic on our world)

BlueChampagne · 12/03/2019 14:25

Leeds2 I have a devil of a job getting my kids to part with books, but the few they do relinquish go to school Grin.

BroomstickOfLove · 11/03/2019 23:26

My 9 year old and his friends are loving the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan. Also Cakes in Space and other books by Reeves and McIntyre. For nonfiction, the royal society gives a price each year for the best children's science book - it's worth getting a few of the winners.

IggyAce · 11/03/2019 23:16

Tamsin Cooke cat burglar and stunt double were popular with my dd when she was in years 5 & 6. Cogheart series is popular.
I listen to readers in year 5 and a lot of the free readers are choosing Tom Gates and David Walliams.
My year 3 ds is loving the time hunters series at the moment, I got the set from the book people.

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/03/2019 23:06

Remembered my son’s other favourite: the 13 storey treehouse series
