Romance books suitable for 10 year old boy

DS2 (aged 10) is an avid reader but only likes romantic books (lots of falling in love). He mostly enjoys the sort of books written from the perspective of teen girls sighing (and more) over hunky teenage boys. We don't find many of those in the child section of the library so he has started borrowing from the teen/young adult section of the library. Trouble is that some of the books he has borrowed have been steamier than I would like (verging on the downright explicit). I used to think that we shouldn't agonise too much about the quality of the books our kids read, the key thing is that they are reading but with this I am not so sure. I wouldn't take that line with magazines on the top shelf of the newsagents for example.

Anyway can anyone suggest good romance books for older children that focus more on the romance side than the sex?

DS1 (also 10) recently enjoyed Elizabeth Goudge's "The Little White Horse".

Daphne Du Maurier might be worth a go?

PiratePanda · 02/09/2017 09:10

Possibly a bit advanced reading-wise, but I loved Georgette Heyer's Regency Romances. Definitely no overt sex! but fabulously romantic, generally well written, and pretty accurate historical detail.

I thought they were mostly enjoyed by women, but my male PhD student told me he loved them when he was a young teen and has read them all!

biscuitbasket · 02/09/2017 09:02

I love that 2 people have recommended the Alanna series! I love them, and DD has read them all many times. They are truly fab

kastiekastie · 02/09/2017 06:15

You sound like such a lovely, loving mum asking that question. I read Judy Blume and also some far racier stuff than I should have done as a pre-teen. Remember reading the Mistress of Falconhurst quite young too! I am an avid reader even now. Wished I hadn't read the Blue Jeans and Jackie photo stories though, as an early teen, think they coloured my perception of the world and relationships in an unrealistic way before I got to experience them.

Eva Ibbotson's YA books definitely! Funny, romantic, not explicit. Quite old-fashioned in a way. My favourites are "The Secret Countess" and "The Morning Gift".

Michelle Magorian (of "Goodnight Mr Tom" fame): "A Little Love Song" (does have 2 'sex' scenes but all very much implied and responsible, nothing explicit). She may have done others.

I Capture the Castle.

Anne of Green Gables - particularly the middle ones where she's in love with Gilbert, "Anne's House of Dreams", and "Rainbow Valley" and "Rilla of Ingleside" (second generation romance). Also her other series, Emily.

Louisa May Alcott - Little Women etc, but also "Rose in Bloom" and "Old-fashioned girl"

If he wants to work through a series then as a PP mentioned, Malcolm Saville's books in the Lone Pine series (and a couple of others) have developing romances between the friends. It's like Famous Five with teen romance. All very very subtle (they were written in the 50s). At that age I loved the fact you had to wait for and dig out the romantic subplots.

What Katy Did Next

And possibly, the EJ Oxenham's "Abbey Girls" series, almost all of which (school/adventure) stories have romantic subplots. Written from 19302-50s so all very low key.

Also second Jane Austen etc. I was reading her at that age though I struggled with Emma until I was older. I'd avoid the Brontes though, it's hard to understand the passion at that age.

I think it's great that he's reading these. Maybe he's a romantic, maybe he wants to be one of the leading men, maybe he's expressing something else. It might be worth seeing if he's interested in any books like "Will Grayson Will Grayson" or #ownvoices novels. That's a romance and comedy (and much more) from a teenage boy pov and features both straight and LGBT relationships.

Adrian Mole?

Has he read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green or Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon? My DSD loved them - she's 12 and loves romance with edge.
I second Sweet Valley High for the swoons and light romance.
I loved Are you there God, it's me Margaret by Judy Blume - appropriate for that age.
What about some Jane Austen? You can't get better than Emma or Pride and Prejudice for swoony women with a tongue in cheek approach.
Also, I read Jane Eyre when I was 10. It blew me away and was all tortured souls and longing.
What about Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery? I'd say pretty much perfect for your son.
I'd love to know how he gets on. I think it's brilliant that he knows what he wants from books and is not afraid to express that part of himself to you.

I was going to recommend I Capture the Castle too. Not sure why someone was so surprised that this genre could be enjoyed by a 10 yr old boy. Kids are just as different from each other as, you know, people.

Some of the Cathy Cassidy books have 9+ stamped on the back!
Also Angels Unlimited series by Annie Dalton.

Lots of fantastic suggestions - thanks everyone. I know some people feel that his interest in romance and love is odd for a 10 year old boy but plenty of 10 year old girls develop an interest in this sort of thing and we don't think they are particularly strange. It is of course a lot harder for a boy because not many love books are written from a boy's perspective. And who knows what his love interests will be when he is older?

I'm going to make a long list and head off to the library. With this list I should be able to keep him off the inappropriate stuff and maybe find ways to encourage him to broaden his range.

Books I enjoyed as a young teen which may be suitable:
The Secret Life of Sally Tomato by Jean Ure
The Sleepover Club books
The Casson Family series
Meg Cabot The Shadowland series
Ella Enchanted

Also, they aren't romance, but if he happens to like animals I used to love the Animal Ark series, there's loads of them and can usually find them in charity shops.

And the Philip Ridley books are good for kids who like crazy adventures that get the imagination going! :)

sakura06 · 19/08/2017 21:41

I was going to recommend Sweet Valley High too! I loved those at the same age. Possibly the Twilight series too?

Viviennemary · 19/08/2017 20:52

Sounds like a lot of really good suggestions on these posts. Those penpal ones sound suitable. Hope you find something he likes.

Bubblysqueak · 19/08/2017 20:49

Sorry I've cut off the author Sharon Dennis wyeth.

Bubblysqueak · 19/08/2017 20:48

This is number 8 in the series. They are set in a girls boarding school. The girls get pen pals from the boys school and end up meeting for dances etc. Age appropriate romance for a 10 yr old.

I used to read Paula Danziger at that age. Teen angst and PG romance.

VeryPunny · 19/08/2017 19:51

How about some fantasy? Main point isn't romance but there are usually romances. Things by David Eddings, and the Wheel of Time.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/08/2017 19:47

Louise Rennison's Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging?

I have just come across a website set up by the University of Loughborough called whonextguide.com. Unfortunately you have to pay to use it (£7.20 a year) but they do a 2 week free trial so I gave it a go. You can specify the genre the child likes and their age and it comes up with suggestions for authors and their book series

I think it's lovely he likes romance :)

Eva Ibbotson is a great suggestion and he might be ready for the classics - Austen and Bronte and so on. He might like I Capture the Castle too.

He mostly enjoys the sort of books written from the perspective of teen girls sighing (and more) over hunky teenage boys.

How is that suitable reading for a 10 year old boy?! Shock Hmm

ComeLuckyApril · 19/08/2017 19:15

Eva Ibbotson's romances are worth a go. They are very gentle, lots of plot with the romance but not sexual. www.fantasticfiction.com/i/eva-ibbotson/song-for-summer.htm is one but she did a few.

ForPetesSakeNotAgain · 19/08/2017 19:13

Thanks for these brilliant suggestions. I'll follow them all up.

I have just looked up the Sweet Valley High books on Amazon WindwardCircle - they made me laugh out loud as I can imagine the contents from the pictures on the covers. They do look perfect for DS2.

Bubblysqueak - who wrote the penpal series? On Amazon quite a few books refer to pen pal.

I second the Tamora Pierce books, loved them at that age.
How about Melanie Rawn Dragon Prince series? I don't remember the story well, except the bit where Rohan dies and Sioned burns the castle for days, I was crying!
