Hi there, this has probably been done before but I want to build a nice collection of books for my toddler. What would you recommend?
TIA

"Press Here" is awesome
"An Island in the Sun"

Icecappedpinetrees · 05/06/2016 23:29

Cats Ahoy by Peter Bentley

I've been reading my lo 'Before you sleep' by Benji Bennett since my lo was 15 mts and we still read it now (nearly 3). It won Irish book of the year a few years ago. it is a great book for toddlers, it has a rhyming story with wonderful illustrations. Great for toddlers to point things out in the pages.

Highly recommend to check it out.

Ah I love Grandpa's Island. My son chose it because of the lovely illustrations - we didn't realise until we read it that it had a bit of a message!

Marcello Mouse hasn't been mentioned - huge favourite with my boy. Also the Alfie books, the Usbourne Farmyard tales and the John Burningham ones - I love Mr Gumpy's Outing. Also Fix-It Duck is brilliant.

It's their "all creatures great and small" collection here

They also have a set of three Hugless Douglas books for £4.99 here

YouAreMyRain · 05/06/2016 22:46

The book people have a set of 10 books for £10 that includes snappy birthday and there's a lion in my cornflakes

Playduh · 05/06/2016 22:28

Would like to nominate The Storm Whale and Grandpa's Island by Benji Davies.

They're very cleverly written so DH and I are just in bits reading them, with the serious stuff just completely flying over DS's head. He also loves them.

Luckystar1 · 05/06/2016 21:58

My DS (19 months) loves Peepo (as do I) and I absolutely adore Tabby McTat (Julia Donaldson) it is fantastic.

I'm also reading him 'There's a house inside my mummy' to prepare him for DC2 but I cry every time I get to page 2, so it's not fulfilling its role just yet!

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 05/06/2016 21:56

Tiger that came to tea!

YouAreMyRain · 05/06/2016 21:53

The Emily Brown books, eg "Emily Brown and the Thing" by Cressida Cowell and Neal Layton

"Where's my Teddy?" By Jez Alborough

GardeningWithDynamite · 05/06/2016 21:52

Anything by Sandra Boynton, especially Moo Baa La la la. We have the songs as well. I found Red Hat Blue Hat in a charity shop and now we have loads of them.

Also second You Choose.

purpleaura · 05/06/2016 21:49

Squeak's good idea is a firm favourite here

PopGoesTheWeaz · 05/06/2016 21:33

All of the Maurise Sendak books (where the wild things are, in the nights kitchen etc)

mrsmortis · 30/05/2016 10:02

Oh and the Worst Princess. You have to read the adventures of Princess Sue.

mrsmortis · 30/05/2016 10:01

Owl babies is the current favourite and can be recited by all members of the family.

The one that gets me every time is Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson.

Scotmum83 · 30/05/2016 09:45

Our lg loves the Sue Hendra books, Supertato is our fave so far :)

Squiff15 · 23/05/2016 18:21

I second Oi Frog it is glorious. If you have robust children I want my hat back but delicate souls may not love it as much as my little monster does. Again by Emily Gravett. Penguin by Polly Dunbar. I love you little Monster by Giles Andrae (This really made me cry) the Jolly Postman. The lovely personalised book The little boy/girl who lost his/her name.

oldjacksscrote · 23/05/2016 11:02

My 2yo faves are:
Postman bear
Rabbits nap
Foxes socks
Hide and seek pig
Old mother Hubbard flip flap book
Squash and a squeeze
Not now Bernard
Morris the manky monster

We get books in the 10 for £10 at the works and have found some great not so well known ones in there as well as some classics

seefeld · 23/05/2016 10:53

I have a dog and vehicle obsessed 2 year old DS so, as well as the classics mentioned above, his favourite books are Dogs by Emily Gravett and The Big Yellow Digger.

chickenstew74 · 23/05/2016 10:44

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. We have some of them already (I have a 7yo as well as the toddler) but apparently we barely scratched the surface the first time round! I have a feeling the older one might still quite enjoy the baby's story-time books even now. I'm reading Heidi to her at the moment which she seems to be enjoying. She's a real outdoors girl.

Apart from the obvious ones and books that have already been suggested DS loves Oi Frog and knows it cover to cover. It's mine and DP's personal favourite too!

FrannySalinger · 21/05/2016 19:52

Oh! Also, if any of you are doggy families, Oh No George is absolutely hysterical.

EsmesBees · 21/05/2016 19:47

Diary of a wombat. Really funny and great illustrations.

ChickyDuck · 21/05/2016 19:45

The grumpalump!
Rosie's babies
Mister magnolia has only one boot

catkind · 21/05/2016 19:43

How to hide a lion. Best read after the tiger who came to tea.
Think you've got most of our other favourites.
Did anyone say Blue Kangaroo?
