She's a very able reader. She's recently read lots of John Green, Malorie Blackman, the Divergence series. Any suggestions for what next?

Has she read the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness?

Itsfab · 22/09/2014 18:10

Posting to remind myself to make notes.

Dd is 11 and has read everything in the library and I've run out if stuff. Have allowed some teen and teen plus stuff against my instincts but hard to complain about a child who wants to read. Trouble is she wants to read stuff I really do not want her too.

Callmegeoff · 21/09/2014 22:57

Dd yr 7 is really enjoying wonder by RJ Palacio, it's meant to be my book club read but she got to it first! She's also loved a few of Lauren St John's books -Race The Wind or something like that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. She's resd quite s few of the books mentioned but there's some to investigate.

For those who asked why doesn't she choose Her own books - she does. But I still like to buy some for her as gifts and to try and introduce her to new authors/ widen her reading.

The WondLa books are good I read them myself they have additional "smart" content in some of the illustrations if you have a smartphone too.

Takver · 21/09/2014 16:53

Grin MaudantWit - I'll have to ask dd if she's read the WondLa books, haven't seen them go by

MaudantWit · 21/09/2014 15:02

Oh and Takver, my DD now thinks that she and your DD are cosmic twins as they have identical taste in reading.

LauraChant · 21/09/2014 14:33

When I was that age I loved The Dark is Rising series, The Crysalids by John Wyndham, The Owl Service by Alan Garner, and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Another series if she hasn't read them is Uglies / Pretties etc, (I've read them too and rather liked them)

Sparrow8 · 21/09/2014 13:49

How about the Twilight series. My dd, yr 6, has started reading them after just finishing the divergent series.

MaudantWit · 21/09/2014 13:33

Also

Geek Girl by Holly Smale
The Wolves series by Joan Aiken

MaudantWit · 21/09/2014 13:28

DD (Y8) recommends the WondLa trilogy by Tony DiTerlizzi. The first book is called The search for WondLa. Also the Heist Society trilogy by Ally Carter. And Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger.
DD also reads lots of fanfic.

MaudantWit · 21/09/2014 13:20

Many of the things I would have suggested have already been mentioned.

I see no harm in a seven year old reading The Mill On The Floss, but obviously that won't be the same experience as reading it with an adult's understanding.

VirtualPointyHat · 21/09/2014 13:15

I loved the unwind book series, but a little dark so maybe read first if she is sensitive

Hakluyt · 21/09/2014 13:09

Did somebody really say their 7 year old was reading The Mill on the Floss? What a waste!

Takver · 21/09/2014 13:06

"Can't she go to the public library and choose her own books? "

That depends where you are, eddiemairswife - round here the YA section of our library has about 20 books in it, so once you've read those, you have to know what you want and order it in from other libraries. Luckily dd's school now has a very good library, and a very helpful librarian, but before she went up to 2ndary she was very dependent on recommendations on here, Amazon 'if you liked X' and so on.

Galaxymum · 20/09/2014 23:45

Has she read the Fallen series by Lauren Kate?

I would also second Stargirl and Joseph Delaney's Spook's Apprentice series.
Philppa Gregory's YA books?
The Book Thief
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime

honeysucklejasmine · 20/09/2014 23:25

Absolutely can not recommend enough the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. Incredible books. I still read them now and find new details and subtleties, ~15 years after the first read. She is also a really interactive author who is online a lot and happily discusses the books with her fans which is great. 4, books so far... Really hoping for a fifth!

eddiemairswife · 20/09/2014 23:22

Can't she go to the public library and choose her own books? My parents were never concerned about my reading material, and I let my children read whatever they fancied.

Leeds2 · 20/09/2014 23:17

For those that like Percy Jackson, I recommend the Djinn series by Linda Davies. Fire Djinn, then Sea Djinn. Assume there are more!

Alexaa · 20/09/2014 17:34

How about the Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare? They seem good. Has she read The Hunger Games series?

DD (7) has strangely been into Classics recently. Mill on the Floss, Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty, and a ton of Jane Austen and Emily Bronte has been transported from my parent's house to our library. She's read all of the Classics at our house already so I added some more.

DS (10) read A series of Unfortunate Events recently by Lemony Snicket There are thirteen books that are a fairly light read but have a rich amount of vocabulary. Those are great.

For more girly reads I suggest the Threads series by Sophia Bennett or the Shopoholic series by Sophie Kinsella.

goingtobefree · 20/09/2014 17:22

Casson family books
His dark materials
Mortal engines
Star girl
The slightly true story of cedar B Hartley
Has she read any of them?

Will look into Dd's book shelf later.

InMySpareTime · 20/09/2014 17:02

Joseph Delaney's "Spooks" series will keep her busy for a while, or try The Strangeling's Tale

TunipTheUnconquerable · 20/09/2014 17:01

Maybe a pointer to some of the brilliant YA review blogs written by teens? I'm not really sure why you need to get her things when she's old enough to be finding her own?
