Just been reading one of these to 6 year old DD. She's quite enjoying it, but I'm put off by the choppy, disjointed sentences and limited vocabulary. I guess they are written in a way that makes them accessible for developing readers, but they seem to me to be really badly written. Has anyone else noticed this?

I think that the first ten or so have been rewritten for the English market and over-simplified. The later, American, editions are more stretching and use a wider vocabulary, although they do have American spelling - my DS took that in his stride and was interested in the differences in spelling.

I'm not a big fan either - but all my children loved them, especially at age 6. There's a new series with a similar concept that my DD aged 7 now really enjoys and has far more complex sentences called Nina and the Travelling Spice Shed, which you can soon move onto...
