Hidden Gruffalos...

We love how there is a Gruffalo hiding somewhere in most of Julia Donaldson and Axel Schaffer's books. We have spotted him in Stickman, Highway Rat, Zog, tiddler and snail and the whale but it's driving me mad I can't find one in Room on the Broom. Has anyone else spotted one?!

Axel Schaeffler started adding them in after he became a Dad. IIRC there isn't one in room on the broom, Charlie Cook, the snail and the whale or squash and a squeeze.

I asked an inside source.

Look again, there is one in the snail and the whale. Plus I found a stickman in tabby mctat

colinowen · 21/07/2022 07:09

There is one in Snail & the Whale

Dinneronmybfpillow · 20/07/2022 19:11

We don't have that one... shall invest before Christmas. I do love them, so much more calming than short episodes of shite on tv <glares at DH for introducing DD to Peppa Fucking Pig>

Snail and the Whale is beautiful and the best - will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Not related at all at all, but I thought for a moment you were talking about the Gruffalo Trail at Bedgebury Pinetum and it's a good opportunity to remind those with gruffalo fans of the great day out to be had (though you do have to pay for parking) just off the A21 in Kent.

I can't wait for Tabby McTat! We were hoping it would be this year but love Smeds and Smoos too. Also agree about Scarecrow's Wedding - the only one I'm not much of a fan of

DesignerRecliner · 20/07/2022 18:55

@Dinneronmybfpillow it's Smeds and the Smoos this year! Announced in May I think

bogoblin · 20/07/2022 18:50

It's the Smeds and the Smoos this year at Christmas!

Dinneronmybfpillow · 20/07/2022 18:48

Only slightly related... but is anyone invested in what one they do at Christmas? Notable absence of Tabby McTat which we think would be lovely. Super worm was 'meh'. Scarecrow's wedding is a bit horrible Confused

Marmite27 · 20/07/2022 18:44

He’s in Zog and the flying doctors too.

There definitely is a Gruffalo in the snail and the whale and Charlie Cook. I’ve seen them and I’ll tell you where they are if you want a spoiler 😊

I’ve never seen the one in the snail and the whale, but have just found it!

He's in the Scarecrow Wedding and Tiddler

Ok Axels site he says there is a gruff all hidden in every book he has done with Julia, after snail in the whale...

And in Charlie Cooks Favourite Book

colinowen · 06/01/2021 19:17

Also in the Smeds and the Smoos

colinowen · 06/01/2021 19:05

Definitely in Snail & the Whale! I’m sorry, but your inside source is wrong.

Look on the page with the kids at school, one of the kids has drawn the Gruffalo in the sand.

Kez2323 · 23/03/2017 19:44

When you start to see the cross references they are in every book. Gruffalo pops up twice in. Charlie cook but so does other characters from gruffalo.

alimak · 21/01/2014 09:56

Hi everyone
my son loves books from Julia Donaldson and we absolutely mad about finding image of graffalo in her books. We have found it in most of them, but we are straggling with 2 books. The Smartest Giant in Town and Room on the broom.
We have found it in
Stick Man
Tabby McTat
Zog
Tiddler
The Snail and the Whale
Superworm

The rest of her books are still missing in our book shell.

So can you please help and give us some clue.

mewkins · 24/10/2013 21:25

I assumed stickman follows the gruffalo...that it was thought up so that stickman has a character all of his own. I like to think that stickman is only temporarily used by the gruffalo's child (before he is found and used as an arm for a snowman)... I have thought a lot about this!

Vickisuli · 07/10/2013 21:52

Squash and a squeeze was their first ever collaboration so definitely pre-dates Gruffalo. I'd spotted him in Stickman and Tabby McTat.

Also did the Gruffalo's child come before Stickman and therefore Stickman was based on her toy stick, or did Stickman come first and her holding him was a nod to Stickman?

Carriepreston · 16/09/2013 12:52

I had no idea the Gruffalo was hidden in the other books

I'll be looking out for them at DC's bedtime tonight

Lady84 · 15/09/2013 08:08

No can't find it in Smartest Giant, although we like to spot all the other fairy tale characters! I think Room on the Broom is one of the older ones but don't think it predates the GRuffalo - ah well, just wanted to check no one else could spot one either!!

BlueChampagne · 14/09/2013 18:42

They're in Tiddler and The Highway Rat too

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa · 14/09/2013 12:52

Does room on the broom predate the gruffalo?
