I have fallen in love with Dr Seuss books! What's your favourite?

Never really saw any as a child although I was aware of them, but last year we all adored the Lorax film and gave DD the book of it (well, Father Christmas did :o), and I've been getting loads out of the library since then as they are just so brilliant.

I love reading them aloud, the rhyme and rhythm just make it a real pleasure. I just gave DD Horton Hears a Who for her 6th birthday which was equally brilliant, and a particular favourite of those we've borrowed is One Fish Two Fish - DD read this and some others herself and really enjoyed reading the made up creature names (Mr Gump's Seven Hump Wump, anyone? :o). She also liked Wacky Wednesday although the illustrations aren't by Seuss. I really liked Gerald McBoingBoing too (we used to watch it on Milkshake!).

What are your/your children's favourites?

Ha! I didn't see your post mum - I gave my son a copy to take off to uni with him. He looked at me like this > Hmm Confused but hopefully he'll get it one day. Grin

TheRealFellatio · 26/06/2013 18:34

Oh the places you will go.

It's genius. it's perfect. Every child should be given a copy. It should be the law.

shockers · 26/06/2013 16:05

My son, now aged 26, can still recite the whole of Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose... as can I Grin.

here the book people have a set of 20 books for £20.

timtam23 · 25/06/2013 23:28

My favourites are two of the more obscure ones

Hand Hand Fingers Thumb

The Foot Book

They are both very funny and have a great rhythm for reading to small children

ihatesonic · 25/06/2013 23:12

CAT IN THE HAT! or one fish, two fish.

I

BooCanary · 25/06/2013 23:07

Oh and yy to the places you will go

BooCanary · 25/06/2013 23:00

My favourites:
Mr Brown Can Moo
Fox in Socks
Wocket in My Pocket

DCs currently love Horton hears a Who, the Lorax and the Grinch.

Dr Seuss is fab!

SkivingAgain · 25/06/2013 22:55

We have the book 10 tall tales, which is fab. The Star Belly Sneeches, Too Many Daves, Yurtle the Turtle, Gertrude McFuzz, the Big Brag, The Empty Pants all fantastic and with a moral to the tale. Both my DCs and me loved them for years.

Oh, the places you'll go! Makes me cry too PP.

muminthecity · 25/06/2013 22:54

I love 'Oh the Places You Will Go,' so does DD. I also get a bit choked reading it. When my best friend graduated uni last year I made her a card with a few lines from that book in it (?You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...?) She cried her eyes out!

Also love 'Happy Birthday.' (Today you are you, that is truer than true, there is noone alive who is you-er than you!)

Cakebitch · 25/06/2013 22:52

Love them. most children's books i find tedious to read, but i love Dr seuss, so much.

fuzzpig · 25/06/2013 22:46

I do have The Works in my local mall! I will check that out.

The book people don't have a set at the moment - if only I'd known last year how lovely they were! They currently have a few individual stories quite cheap on there - Horton was a few quid.

I love Dr Seuss books they got my dd reading on her own.

She was getting nowhere with Biffer and Chip and the tedious gang and was struggling to get to grips with reading. But from the minute she picked up Dr Seuss she was off and has never looked back.

melliebobs · 25/06/2013 21:50

Dd is 15 months n I loooove reading dr suess to her. We like 'I can read with my eyes shut' and 'to think that I saw it on mulberry street'

I don't like green eggs n soddin ham

You know you've read too much dr suess when you start to read your own book to that kind of rhythm

johnnycomelurky · 25/06/2013 21:48

I also love Oh, the places you will go - also makes me choke up. I grew up on Dr Seuss and like most of them but One Fish, Two Fish gets on my wick, is DS's favourire as takes so long to read and he gets to stay up later!

xTillyx · 25/06/2013 21:48

I love There's a Wocket in My Pocket. If you have The Works near you, my sis got us some that were meant to be 99p each for 30p each last week. They're small ones like Ladbybird book size if you remember them.

WorkingtoohardMama · 25/06/2013 21:46

I love green eggs and ham and fox in socks, they are such fun to read. With green eggs and ham, ds reads Sam I am and I read the other part (has he got a name, can't think of it!) I think it's brilliant for getting into character.

I also love oh the places you'll go, not so keen on the thinks you can think; but I do love the sleep book.

Like a lot of dr seuss books it is a bit too odd in the middle, but all comes together in the end.

I also get a bit tearful at the places you'll go, it's such a lovely message!

RedlipsAndSlippers · 25/06/2013 21:45

Loved Robert the rose horse, my Nana used to read it to us all the time. Think it may be time for me to invest in a set...for DD of course...

DramaAlpaca · 25/06/2013 21:39

I didn't think I'd like them & didn't read them with DS1 & DS2, but DS3 got a present of a set of them & absolutely loved them, and I was converted too.

His favourite was Hop on Pop, mine was The Cat in the Hat. We also loved One Fish Two Fish. I'm sure they helped him learn to read & encouraged his love of books.

ballroomblitz · 25/06/2013 21:39

Check out The Book People fuzzpig. I got a set of twelve for about a tenner I think, maybe less. Was Christmas time so not sure if it would be the same now

Meglet · 25/06/2013 21:37

Mr Brown can Moo! ('he can even make a noise like a goldfish kiss!')

There's a Wocket in my pocket.

SorrelForbes · 25/06/2013 21:37

I can highly recommend There's a Wocket in my Pocket. It's still one of mine and my sister's favourite books. She reads our copy to her three DDs.
