Favourite Enid Blyton stories (I would appreciate it hugely if not all were MT, FF etc!)

Every thread about Enid Blyton seems to be about St Clare's or the Famous Five, with maybe a Faraway Tree slipped in if you're lucky!

Didn't anybody else read some of the other books and enjoy them?

I used to love the Green Goblin Stories, and had some of the holiday books (my mum's) which I loved and read over and over again.

I think my favourite short stories were The Humpy Goblin's Kettle and The Flyaway House Smile.

Did someone mention Six Bad Boys? I vaguely remember having that, though I can't for the life of me remember what it was about. I was also more into The Secret Seven while my sister like The Famous Five. All I remember of The Secret Seven was when someone was stealing the neighbourhood dogs, and when the sheepdog of an old man they knew went missing, I remember the final scene when they find and release him and the story described how he ran miles over the hills in the snow to get back to his master, etc, etc. Still brings a tear to my eye. :)

Terrier, I was going to say the cheap sweets one too! 'A bag of nasty pink sweets, a bag of nasty green sweets and a bag of nasty yellow sweets'. It was in one of the story compilations and I'm forever trying to find it again - I'd actually started to think I'd dreamt it until I saw your post!

The Land of Far Beyond. A children's version of Pilgrim's Progress with beautiful (albeit a little scary) illustrations.

I liked The Boy Next Door, too.

waitingtobeamummy · 04/04/2012 17:41

Naughty Amelia Jane! She was fab!

nickelhasababy · 04/04/2012 17:39

I loved the Mystery of the Pantomime Cat and the Mystery of Banshee Towers.
and all the naughtiest girl.
and the faraway tree.

but hated the Famous Five

PerditaMcLeod · 04/04/2012 17:36

And 'Holiday House'! It's all come flooding back!!!

PerditaMcLeod · 04/04/2012 17:34

I loved 'The Boy Next Door'. Had some extremely amusing stereotypical American 'baddies' as I recall!

ANd Cherry tree farm

GeorginaWorsley · 02/04/2012 19:07

I loved the nazi submarine story too!

puffylovett · 02/04/2012 18:53

Definitely the five find outers here. Ds1 are currently reading The Mystery of the Secret Bundle :)

CalicoCathy · 02/04/2012 18:23

My favourite was the adventurous 4 - 4 children sail off to an island and get shipwrecked or something, and then swim to another island and discover a secret base of nazi submarines. Wish I still had it.
But the second one, the Adventurous 4 Again, was not as good, as far as I recall.

I also liked the Mistletoe farm ones, and the secret seven (the one where the thief tries to escape by pretending he is a guy on a bonfire was my fave)

Six Cousins again
Six cousins at Mistletoe Farm
The adventurous Four

The Story Party

BerryLellow · 01/04/2012 18:38

Plot not slot

BerryLellow · 01/04/2012 18:37

I loved the circus ones, also wishing chair and faraway tree. I read the secret seven books rather than famous five but they haven't made any impression on me as I can't remember a single slot or character :o

Was a bit more into my pony books tbh

SecretNutellaFix · 01/04/2012 18:21

Did no one else ever read Shadow the Sheepdog?

sairygamp · 01/04/2012 18:18

The Six Bad Boys is fabulous - I cry every time I read it Sad Also loved the 'secret' ones with Little Prince Paul, Jack, nora, Peggy and Mike. Especially the Secret Mountain- all those red haired wierdos in the mountain. Ooooh - shiver Grin

...Off to get a life....

singingmum · 01/04/2012 18:14

I wish my dc's would read enid blyton as although yes they are twee and have lots of messages about manners and behaviour. I hate some books these days the children are arrogant naughty and rude in a lot of books and the mummy's and daddys spoil them and don't correct them I hate that but I told most old fairy tales with goldilocks etc getting in trouble for their crimes

GetOrfMoiiLand · 01/04/2012 17:52

I loved the adventure stories when I was a child, but they were a bit off colour then, and I think I would find them ghastly with their racist and classist undertones if I read them now.

The Castle of Adventure (where the ornithologist kid hid with his parrot in the bushes to watch eagles, and came upon a band of ruffians WHAT ARE THE CHANCES) is one - they befriend a dirty little gyspy kid and make her wear plimsolls and wash in carbolic soap or something.

I loved Willow Farm though.

I always wanted to brain Anne in Famous Five with her bloody dolls.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/04/2012 17:50

Yes, the five findoutters. Loved them!

Lillyreader · 01/04/2012 17:49

Oops - just saw your post Leeds2. Loved The Wishing Chair series. Many's the time I wished for one of those to whisk me off to Fairyland whenever I wanted. :)
