Nanny accessing internet to view inappropriate content

Just discovered that our nanny was viewing sites related to sexually transmitted disease and to order condoms whilst supposed to be looking after my young boys. Am v disappointed, nanny is loved by the boys and generally good so I am reluctant to find another nanny but on other hand think this is a major a breach of trust (as well as breach of contract). I am even more shocked that she would consider it to be appropriate to search on sites like this in daytime when boys are at home and might view the computer. (Eldest boy told me they were playing in garden whilst she was on the internet - which makes it even worse...). Has anybody else had similar situation - what did you do?

Jesus wept.

Thank Christ I am not a nanny for this woman.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/07/2009 12:44

thebody · 17/07/2009 12:43

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/07/2009 12:37

the body - same here with my dh

GypsyMoth · 17/07/2009 12:30

Op disappeared??

thebody · 17/07/2009 12:23

solid.. my sad dh actually tried to access the juicy bum site and was a little dissapointed when he didnt find it..

sazzerbear lots of people use the internet at work.. the children were in the garden and not near the computer and she wasnt accessing anything illegal or even distasteful..
I am 'at work' and my mindees are all napping.. I dont think I am being unprofessional by accessing the internet.

HarrietTheSpy · 17/07/2009 10:26

Is she a live in nanny?

Is she allowed to use the computer?

If both - shouldn't have been looking at it during work time but if she needed the info, she needed it. Not realistic to think that she should wander off to increasingly non existent internet cafe etc to check. I would probably be a bit worried she actually needed proper medical advice frankly rather than something from the internet! That's where my delimma would be - if she has a problem is she getting the best advice?!

If she's live out and doing it during work time, sorry but that is weird and seems like very strange judgement. Under those circumstances - bizarre to be ordering condoms off the web. I can't even begin to imagine our nanny doing that. Save it for later.

hobbgoblin · 17/07/2009 07:43

blueshoes, the selection in chemists is

Her DP could have a ginormous member or summink, which is probably also a sackabkle offence.

PixiNanny · 17/07/2009 00:34

Oh, and sazzerbear, it could well be relevant to her job if she has older charges. My 12yo charge asks me questions about sex and STDs on occasion and after speaking to MB about it she's said to be honest with him unless it involves something thats personal or if I'm uncomfortable talking about it.

PixiNanny · 17/07/2009 00:29

Er.. Just for your info Mummy369, I keep myself up to date on sexual health issues, including STD information constantly, I do not think that I have any STDs thank you very much! However I'd rather be in the know about STDs than be ignorant! That doesn't mean that I sleep around either. Not that it would be anybody's business but my own if I did, as with the nanny's!

And in response to OP, unless you forbade internet usage whilst working then I see no reason why she shouldn't have been using those sites. I'd be mortified if my host family found out that I was using them. And also, how do you know that it wasn't your DH using the sites? It could well have been.

blueshoes · 16/07/2009 22:28

Why does anyone have to order condoms off the internet? Doesn't everyone just pick them up at the supermarket or chemists?

Maybe nanny is shy, rather than sexually experienced.

hobbgoblin · 16/07/2009 21:27

Everyone workign with kids must be Asexual, is the rules.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/07/2009 21:08

can i have that other web site please

obv will look at it on my lappy and not mb's

seriously though, i honestly dont see the problem, maybe she had an itch/rash etc and wanted to check before seeing gp/ask at chemist etc

obv a nanny is meant to look after and care for her charges, but remember that many nannys dont get lunchbreaks and work 11/12hrs so surely spending time on the laptop isnt a huge sin (if charges are safe) - as sure many on here use their work computers to go on sites

sazzerbear · 16/07/2009 20:46

Whatever!

SolidGoldBrass · 16/07/2009 20:40

I note the OP hasn't been back. Because I did wonder exactly how she found out what the nanny was looking at and when, and I wonder how old the DC are etc.
Because I rather suspect the OP might have been a semi-troll to see how many sexually-dysfunctional bucketheads there are on here.

sazzerbear · 16/07/2009 20:37

She's not working in a job where she has to look up such stuff, she's a nanny and should be looking after the kids. Maybe if she is allowed to look at pc, stricter rules should be imposed on what she looks at and when?

SolidGoldBrass · 16/07/2009 20:29

Sazzerbear: actually, that's rubbish. Sexual health information sites would not be picked up by that many porn filters, and don't forget that ther are plenty of jobs in which looking at such stuff would be relevant to work anyway.

sazzerbear · 16/07/2009 19:51

It's also very naive of the nanny to think she could get away with it!

slyandgobbo · 16/07/2009 19:48

It depends how old the children are, whether they require constant supervision and how long she was on the internet for. We had a nanny who was on the internet for hours whilst allegedly caring for toddlers. She was also looking at pictures of penises but that wasn't the aspectwhich bothered me. We asked her not to use the PC after that.

sazzerbear · 16/07/2009 19:45

You wouldn't be allowed to look up such stuff at work, so why should it be any different for a nanny who's AT WORK?!

morningpaper · 16/07/2009 19:42

Ahhh what everyone else has said.

But can I say that I am quite shocked that many of you think that only bad girls get STDs. While you keep giving out this sort of message it will be hard for you to teach your children about this sort of thing. ANYONE can get an STD.

You don't really say what your problem is with the nanny doing this. Does her contract state that she mustn't use the internet during work time? (Does it also state that you reserve the right to view her internet history and intercept her internet use?)

TDiddyIsaMan · 16/07/2009 19:36

think you are over reacting. And i think that it might be theoretically possible to contract STD from some lower risks acts? Even so, it sounds as though she is actimg responsibly by dealing with it? Also were we all saints as youngsters?

SolidGoldBrass · 16/07/2009 19:26

Erm, actually I made that sitename up (though there may be something of that name).
I can offer a similar site title with some, er, entertaining content if you like...

thebody · 16/07/2009 17:48

still havnt got over the fuckmyjuicybum.com.. lol. seriously though I dont think it is any of your business, she wasnt accessing porn sites, which wouldnt be very mary poppins ,but an information site.. the children were in the garden and

not affected.. are you checking up on her?

mummy369 I dont think the op needs support I think she needs to get a grip..

how is she going to explain to her dss, when needed, about sexual health when she seems so uptight herself... and what do you mean by 'putting her own health and welfare at risk' using concoms is just what that isnt doing...

spicemonster · 16/07/2009 17:41

nickelbabe - I have a very proper job at a massive company (15,000 employees in the UK alone) and I am allowed to use my computer to look at any website I choose (as long as it's not illegal) and buy anything I choose over the internet. Same story at every other place I've ever worked.
