AIBU to be annoyed that my nanny's phone was off all day so DS was not collected from school when he was sick

I was on night shift last night it was really busy so i was looking forward a nice bath and sleep when i got back. On the way home school called to say could he be picked up ? I then called nanny-no answear so assumed she was driving so sent a text.Thinking that she would pick it up and go and get him. She called me at 330 to say she had just got the message and had I got him ? Was and to think he had been ill at school all day.

ok, so it's really odd that you didn't just go and get your son, but I assume that's because Nanny was working and being paid for the day?
If that's the case I'd probably be giving written warnings for not being available during working hours.
but still think it's odd you didn't just go and get him.

She left phone at home this morning. I have previously sent her texts she dosen't always reply but usually she just sort of gets on with it. TBH I thought by the time I could get there she would be at school anyway. But yes should have checked am surprised school didn't call.Apparently he slept most of the afternoon.

i think YABU. To rely on a text and not even to check with the school that he had been picked up? TBH, I don't really understand why you didn't go and get him yourself.

And if you were driving home at the time, how did you not notice that your nanny and your DS hadn't arrived home themselves at some point during the day?

ssd · 11/12/2008 20:45

you're his mum, you should have checked nanny had picked him up or went yourself

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 11/12/2008 20:44

Why do people rely on text for soemthing so important?

i have read a few threads about texts recently - it is just not a reliable form of communication

no, I don't think you should have assumed she had done it

her phone being off IF it should be on in the day is a different issue

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 11/12/2008 20:43

I don't think you should have relied on a text. I'm afraid I think you should have checked as well.

Why was her phone off? Is she expected to have it on during the day?

Well I think YABU and YANBU. Nanny should have been reachable if she was in loco parentis for that time, but, you should have checked that she got the message. I'm surprised the school didn't call you back at any point during the day.

luckylady74 · 11/12/2008 20:40

I think you should have checked - sorry.
