Take nanny on holiday?

My children are 2.5 & 4 months, nanny just started working with us last week for my 4 month old. 2.5 Ye old remaining in nursery. We’ve not discussed holidays and I’d assumed we wouldn’t bring her. But would it be a good thing? Worth the extra expenses? I’m looking at club med and childcare is £365 per child per week. So £730 total. Bringing nanny will cost much more than that…ballpark I reckon £3k (cost of bringing her plus that she’s working rather than on a weeks holiday. ) also she’s not going to have resources or local knowledge etc.
im wondering whether ita probably much more enjoyable for children to be in kids clubs.

How much time were you were planning to put them in childcare whilst on holiday? Interesting that it was your partner suggested taking nanny with you, who also appears to be looking at a holiday that isn’t really suited to spending time with your DC.

We didn’t have any local family support, once DC appeared on the scene the type of holiday we went on changed and was very child focussed (DH rediscovered his joy of building sandcastles!) whilst DC were young. It was our time to have quality fun with DC

As @JanuaryJaguar said / no one is judging for using a nannY

just rang the fact a family holiday is that

to spend with your family - and im saying that as an ex nanny of 20yrs

many a time I’ve had kids at work in their family place and routine and parents gone away for sun or skiing break for 4/5 days

but a family holiday is that. You enjoy being in the pool with your kids

if you had said taking parents it’s slightly diff - they won’t be on call and with kids all day

as a paid nanny. Many friends who have done it have the kids most of the day or few hours daytime then evening and parents go out but they are working 10/12hrs a day

it is not a holiday for the nanny and that’s fair enough. They are being paid

equally on holiday the kids want their parents. Not the nanny and means they are sometimes a third leg and a costly one at that !

as I said before you will pay for everything plus an inconvenience fee for them being away from their home /friends and family

JanuaryJaguar · 12/01/2025 19:02

No one is judging you for having a nanny. They are judging you for not wanting to spend time with your children on holiday. For me this was a time to play in the pool or on the beach together. With both parents not working this should be a lovely relaxed time together.

2025willbemytime · 12/01/2025 19:02

When I was a nanny I went on holiday with them to a ski resort. I think I had one afternoon off in the week and the baby slept in my room too. I didn't really get a choice in the matter about going, I was a live in nanny, so I recommend you ask if it is something she would be interested in? I think an uplift in her pay too for the time you're away is necessary.

I really don’t see the funny side of such a pretentious post. Why would anyone put their two little children, especially a 4 month old into a children’s club. Or hike the nanny on holiday when holidays are meant to be family time. I would leave the kids at home with nanny. It sounds like they are an inconvenience to you.

I’ve cosleep with my daughter since she was born. Nursery is Monday-Friday 8:30-5:30 - I parent the rest of the time. Leaving them to go on holiday would be wild and not something I’d ever do. But I know people who have, in fact most of my friends have stayed overnight away from their children It’s probably not something I’ll ever do but I don’t judge them for it.

There are a lot of hours in the day to fill and it’s nice to be able to have a little break now and then. It’s not pretentious- lots of holidays offer childcare.

Jez I’m so sleep deprived and busy you know parenting because it’s the weekend and nanny not here so sorry I’ve not found time to return yet 🤣

i didn’t have a nanny before, she’s only just started and in previous holidays we’ve used kids clubs for eldest. But my DP suggested we ask nanny so I was wondering what others did. It will cost ALOT more and I probably it was more the ultra wealthy who take their Nannie’s on holiday with them. But I was interested in hearing from people who do. I don’t think any of that’s strange.

crumblingschools · 12/01/2025 18:52

How much parenting does DP do? Is the split 80/20 when you are not on maternity leave?

ChampagneLassie · 12/01/2025 18:48

LoafofSellotape · 12/01/2025 18:40

Is it in the contract you have with your nanny as you can't just spring it on her?

Not in contract and not discussed. My DP just suggested it…hence it got me wondering. I don’t imagine our nanny would want to come, but I don’t know (and I’m sure if I paid her extra / made it attractive enough). It’s also that my DP would rather do a more adventurous holiday ie not a big resort with childcare so having nanny would allow us to do something more like that more easily.

I really did forget I posted, for some reason my notifications don’t pop up. It’s only been 24 hrs!
I really didn’t imagine this being so…inflammatory. We’ve done numerous Neilson holidays were the childcare is from 3 or 4 months and i didn’t see anyone judging other parents for using it!
im planning a holiday for September when my kids will be 3.5 & 13 months. We’ve had numerous holidays with my eldest and used childcare and she’s loved it. We have no family help and like most majority of childcare/household/life admin falls to me probably a 80/20 split. If I didn’t have childcare I’d never get any sort of break & frankly I don’t think I’d manage. Why martyr myself. If I said my parents were coming to help I bet you wouldn’t judge. My toddler is very demanding and sleeps very little. Typically 8pm-6am and wakes in night to climb into bed with me where she cuddles and sleep takes and grabs my breasts. I’ve had 2 nights away from her in her life- in hospital with my 2nd birth. we’re with her 6am-8:30 at nursery and pickup 5/530-8pm she gets LOTS of time and attention. I honestly don’t have the energy to look after her 24/7. My baby is lovely and easy but I need time to do all of the regular life stuff like go to the dentist, get my hair cut, have physio, do batch cooking and prep for returning to work in a couple of months. My baby is exclusive BF and I’m at home majority of time with nanny and baby. My partner has a very full on job and does as much as he can.

I’m posting this whilst my baby sleeps on me which is currently the only place she will sleep. I’m a bit shocked at how much judgement. I deserve a holiday and break now and then & I’m not going to feel guilty about that. I know LOTS of other parents who have family help and way more time away from their kids than I do.

swordpen · 12/01/2025 18:34

I wouldn't want a nanny on my vacation personally.

BookGoblin · 12/01/2025 18:33

@ChampagneLassie

Your last post totally confirms it 😂

Never mind, school tomorrow!

ChampagneLassie · 12/01/2025 18:23

BookGoblin · 11/01/2025 19:21

Because of the way it's written, it's an inflammatory tone and because the baby is 4 months old, an extra detail to make everyone horrified

Oh and because the OP hasn't been back

And because if they had a 2.5 year old they'd have figured out their arrangements in previous holidays

Jez I’m so sleep deprived and busy you know parenting because it’s the weekend and nanny not here so sorry I’ve not found time to return yet 🤣

We holidayed with our young kids recently and I would have killed for a tiny bit of time to ourselves. Of course not the whole holiday but maybe kids club now and again.
We don't get much respite at home though and I often solo parent with little family help.
I would not judge anyone at all contemplating some childcare on holiday too!
It's all about what you're used to. If you're used to the help, then going without will obviously seem hard.
If I was in your situation OP it sounds like the childcare there is much cheaper so is there a particular reason you'd prefer your nanny? If so, and you can afford it and nanny is agreeable, go ahead and ask her, otherwise go with the childcare included.
Just because you're on holiday as a family it doesn't mean you can't have some quality alone time if the opportunity is there, in addition to the time spent as a family.
I get the hate on here, but I guarantee not one person on this thread would pass up some child free holiday time if offered! Especially at those ages.

Thanks x

Anything else aside unless the Nanny has a legal right to work in the country where you are holidaying they would be breaking the rules of a tourist visa by working.

😂😂😂😂

This is amazing questing for rules. You're incorrect, but I admire your spirit

This reminds me of the time I went away with my mum, stepdad and sister who was 3. I was 19. A few families we spoke to round the pool thought I was the nanny 🤣

@LuckySantangelo35 not sure the 4 month old will play with other children!

Club Med do provide kids club from 4 months old so that is lucky for OP

Why would you need childcare on a family holiday? Isn't the idea to spend time with your children?

Agreed .... Surely you want a family holiday to be a time spent with family?

Give your nanny a paid week off

Or perhaps they'd like to see you rather than be in childcare again? That was certainly the case for my under 5s. Absolutely no interest in being left with strangers to play with other unknown children. I would only take a nanny if it's a working holiday.

Iloveeverycat · 12/01/2025 10:42

It's a family holiday that is so sad that you don't want to spend time with your own children. I feel sorry for your kids. Are you going to ship them off to boarding school too.
