Would you have an objection to a lesbian aupair?

Just curious

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 12:56

Hercules1, your question to me has me thinking... the only thing that is NOT par for the course nowadays is a little old-fashioned prudishness.

If I WERE lucky enough to have an au pair and if I were keeping private from my children my sexual relationships, I would want my au pair to do the same....

WanderingTrolley · 06/04/2008 12:49

Dotty I think I was one of the people who offended you (and probably others) with my defence of the title question. I'm really sorry about that - I honestly didn't mean any offence and am embarrassed to have upset you or anyone else. Huge apologies

I think it is an odd question tbh(Would you object to a lesbian au pair), hence I thought there might be more to the story.

What I find oddest about this thread is imananny's friend: why on earth would anyone mention their sexuality in a job interview? Sorry if I'm missing an obvious point there.

chamaeleon · 06/04/2008 12:37

dotty if i have offended you i apologise.

but i would say i would object to a black/jewish/heterosexual au pair if they were in your face about it. as i said in my first post i dont like people being in your face about anything, and i assumed that au pair = teenager which can often mean in your face about whatever their identity is. and you often find teenagers assume an identity because they feel it is controversial and makes them different (just look at all the teenygoths in town!) and so can moan about how misunderstood they are. and in my youth i knew several people who pushed their 'alternative' sexuality in your face just to get a reaction

i hadnt assumed mishmash was guessing i thought the subject had been brought up (and i didnt know if mishmash was the au pair or employer) and it would just seem strange that someone would mention that in a job interview as it nothing to do with the job

I don't have an au pair by the way. God it only!!!

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 12:16

Well actually yes I do! I'm a single mother and if and when I meet somebody, I'll definitely choose to hide it from them for a good while. I have been on dates and not even mentioned it to my elder dc.

If the au pair wants to sleep with a rugby team or a netball team or both then that's their choice, but I'd rather my children were unaware of it all.

I might crack open a bottle of wine with the au pair and force her to tell me everything though

hercules1 · 06/04/2008 12:06

Madame - do you hide your sexual relationships from you children?

girlfrommars · 06/04/2008 12:05

What a silly question.

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 11:52

I think Disenchanted's post was excellent too. I grew up Ireland where 95% of people were catholic and sometimes, people 'tolerated' me. And thought they were only fabulous. I must say though that the Ireland I went back to is a different country from the one I left 15 yrs ago! Nobdoy cares if you have two heads now. Hard to believe how much a place can change in 15 yrs.

To the OP, I'd say that if you're left guessing about your au pair's sexuality then she is very discreet. Which is what I'd want from an au pair. I may be blasted for this, but I'd like my au pair to hide her sexual relationships from my children.

BetteNoir · 06/04/2008 11:42

Dottydot, I'm sorry this thread has upset you

It must be so disappointing and frustrating having to deal with all this crap.

allegrageller · 06/04/2008 11:35

I would love a lesbian au pair. If she was good with my kids!!

And guess what, I would also be OK with a straight one too!!

But then I am one of THEM, so you can't rely on my opinion

Disenchanted - excellent post at 10.41

I totally agree. Sorry DottyDot that people feel it reasonable to post such pointless and crass questions.

blueshoes · 06/04/2008 11:33

threadworm, snap!

Threadworm · 06/04/2008 11:31

I would welcome a lesbian aupair, of course.

lilymolly- are you for real?

You really feel the op is a reasonable and appropriate subject for discussion?

Substitute "black", "Jewish" "Muslim"

or as Lulmama says- "some of my best friends "...

hecate · 06/04/2008 11:05

I didn't assume that and don't see that everyone else did. What gave you that impression oops?

it makes a change from the male nursery nurse being 'odd' argument i suppose

just so disingenous

charliegal · 06/04/2008 10:56

thank you lulumama, exactly. Strangely, i come too mumsnet for support, not to have my sexuality debated by the 'tolerant'-

TotalChaos · 06/04/2008 10:54

lillymolly - yeah but with the inbuilt assumption that people would as a matter of routine see an ap being gay as some sort of "issue"

NYC6723 · 06/04/2008 10:52

Not at all but although I have a ds and his dad lives in another country I would never get a male childminder
