Just curious

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Lulumama · 06/04/2008 10:48

lillymolly,i take it that you have never been on the receiveing end of racism, or homophobia, e.g been called an insulting name, and then eben told , 'oh, you're being oversensitive', or 'some of my best freinds are gay/black etc...

it is ridicolous that in 2008 people still thikn that it is a question worth asking....

i thikn you are confusing high horse with zero tolerance of homophobia

harleyd · 06/04/2008 10:47

is it not illegal to discrimate against someone for a job because of their sexuality

why does it matter to anybody, it isnt anybodys business

Disenchanted · 06/04/2008 10:46

No worries Its something I feel very strongly about actully.

Dottydot · 06/04/2008 10:44

And Hecate - i agree. I've been on MN for over 6 years now and I've joined in on many, many threads on lesbian/gay issues - I put forward my point of view, I listen to others'.

Just sometimes I get pissed off that it still needs debating and talking through.

Obviously it does - I do it every single day of my life by showing those around me that we are not a freakoid family with 2 mums and 2 children. We're utterly, boringly normal. But sometimes it just gets too much. And today's one of those days...

lilymolly · 06/04/2008 10:43

good god ladies, can we not have a mature dicussion without anyone getting on ones high horse.

Noone has been remotely sexist, homophobic etc on this thread and yet people are getting upset and angry by it.
OP was only asking a question ffs

Dottydot · 06/04/2008 10:41

Disenchanted - I heart you!

Exactly. You said what I've been struggling to put in words sat here for the past few minutes.

Disenchanted · 06/04/2008 10:41

I think the point is comments like 'Oh I donn't mind as long as they don't ....'

But why should you mind?! Why is it your buisness.

Noone would start a thread saying ' would you object to a heterosexual aupair'

if she had a boyfriend would they?

They wouldnn't say 'oh I don't mind shes straight as long as she doesn't bring her boyfriend round'

Its just pointing out something that doesn't need to be pointed out.

Her sexuality obviously IS an issue because if she was attracted to men then the thread would never have been started.

People SAY they are tolerant, people actlike 'they don't mind' but to make the statement in the first place means that lesbianism is a separate, different rules, something thats STILL socially segregated even after all this time!

Not even sure if that makes any sense on screen, it did in my head though!

hecate · 06/04/2008 10:40

When you come across a sensitive or difficult topic, you have choices - you can attempt to eductate people, change opinion etc, or you can say nobody must ever talk about this, get rid of it, lets pretend it never happened . I think it's better to discuss than to delete. Attitudes don't change by magic. They change by debate, discussion and being challenged.

TotalChaos · 06/04/2008 10:33

IMHO the thread title is a bit disingenuous (?sp). All faux innocent so that whichever way the pitchforks come out the OP can disclaim all responsibility if the tone of posts doesn't go the way they like.

harleyd · 06/04/2008 10:33

is this for real?

captainmummy · 06/04/2008 10:32

Dot - I dont understand. There hasn#t been anyone one here saying that they would judge a lesbian au pair. Everyone has said exactly the opposite, havent they?
Why are you so angry?

charliegal · 06/04/2008 10:28

agree...stepping away. Hope there are no more of these kind of threads.

yorkishbirdy · 06/04/2008 10:27

DD, isn't the road to acceptance discussion and education? I mean, if people hadn't had these bigotted discussions about blacks/jews/whatever else then things would never have changed would they? It is easy to think that everyone should be a certain way but htat doesn't mean they are and often discussion can open people up to a different way of thinking can't it?

Disenchanted · 06/04/2008 10:27

Dotty,

Im sorry you have to read shit like this.

charliegal · 06/04/2008 10:25

making my point exactly tigermoth. Do you honestly think that people give you extra leeway because you're a lesbian, I mean come on!

Dottydot · 06/04/2008 10:23

OK, I'm stepping away from the thread. It's got my blood boiling and there's no sodding point.

I can't believe people are posting what they think are rational responses to the OP...

Seriously. Look at what you're writing and swap 'lesbian' for 'black'. You just wouldn't write it.

charliegal · 06/04/2008 10:22

yes dottydot, i hate the assumption that you basically have an audience of straight women and it's totally ok to raise this kind of 'question'.it reminds me of the women snogging on the bus thread.sort of ruins my day when i see this kind of 'debate'
Especially when there is always a 'as long as they dont shove it down your throat' response from someone.
How liberal-

tigermoth · 06/04/2008 10:20

As long as they did their job well and were nice to live with, no problem with any au pair's sexuality. But likewise, I would not tolerate more or give them more leeway just because they were lesbian.

yorkishbirdy · 06/04/2008 10:17

Well I thought it was offensive at first but actually the discussion here has been interesting - and eye opening for me. I really thought that that kind of thinking went out with the ark - even my (very conservative) father has realised that sexual choice does not have anything to do with anything other than the person you choose to go to bed with!

ScienceTeacher · 06/04/2008 10:16

As for me and my house...

Disenchanted · 06/04/2008 10:15

Ah I see, you are holier than thou.

That Ok then

I agree with dottydot, its an awful title.

Dottydot · 06/04/2008 10:14

good god yes - lesbian au pairs - what is the world coming to....

What a ridiculous title. And don't start with the 'I didn't mean it to be offensive' or I'll start a challenge for the most unintentionally offensive offensive thread titles.

Swap 'lesbian' for black/jewish/disabled/muslim and you'd have had a riot on your hands...

It's not often I get pissed off, but the fact that people on the thread were sympathetic to your crap title also irks me.

ScienceTeacher · 06/04/2008 10:12

I would really prefer that none of my aupairs are sexually active, tbh.

So the person looking after your children shouldn't be able to have sex?!

Surely then, by that rule, after your first child you stopped having sex completly and therefore will never/ did never have a 2nd child?!

MrsMattie · 06/04/2008 10:08

Of course not.
