I understand the dad is upset by the injuries, but surely accidents happen?

Thoughts on this? It's not unusual for children to fall and hurt themselves. OK, this looks a bad one, but to say the nursery was negligent seems a bit of a stretch?

Dad pulls daughter out of nursery after accident leaves her with eye injury

Neil said the family had been left "very traumatised" and his daughter was tearful, in pain, and not sleeping well.

The first time my son ended up at a&e I accepted accidents happen. The second time when his head had to be glued I gave notice and asked for a full investigation. 1 month later OFSTED rated the nursery inadequate and a big point was children’s safety and supervision levels.
I went with my gut and I was right.

As a one-off, accidents happen and sometimes have serious consequences.

As a pattern of injuries at the same nursery, I would be very unimpressed that they couldn't even tell me what had happened and "found her like that".

Yes, nursery staff turn their backs and are doing other stuff, but normally they have a sense of where the children are and what they are doing so most accidents are prevented (because they can see it heading that way, for example a child waving a heavy wooden toy about) or, at the very least, they have a good idea of how the accident happened even if they didn't actually see it (banged into the play kitchen, fell over a toy car etc.).

buckingmad · 22/05/2023 12:05

My daughter tripped in front of my eyes and fell tooth first on the ONLY toy in the room and chipped her tooth. That was with 1-1 supervision.

Accidents happen, toddlers/young children are notoriously clumsy. The Dad sounds like he's attention seeking.

Kanaloa · 22/05/2023 12:00

The staff have no clue how it happened and ‘found her lying on the floor.’ He also says she has had other injuries. I suppose we don’t know the full situation, if she has had more injuries which can’t be explained by the staff being paid to care for her, this might just be the last straw.

JenniferBarkley · 22/05/2023 11:53

Both of mine have gone through particularly clumsy periods at that age when they've had a growth spurt or we haven't noticed they need new shoes (Blush).

DD1 memorably fell on one side of her forehead at nursery and then did the other side when out with us a few days later creating a perfect mirror of the bump and cut on the other side. At about that time they used to get her to go on the bikes so she'd put a helmet on and then leave it on her Blush

I haven't read the article, but it looks like the kind of injury that can happen very easily with little ones, and in a split second too.

Ariela · 22/05/2023 11:42

My DD tripped over her own feet and fell on a toy and did a similar injury. I was stood right next to her and had NO idea she was going to do it. It was glued and healed fine.

Nodancingshoes · 22/05/2023 11:21

That looks nasty. I don't doubt the parents were upset and worried. My child had a similar injury that he did at home with me one to one supervision. These things do happen. Nursery not really knowing how she did it is the sticking point though. Unfortunate incident all round - hope it gets sorted without too much bad feeling

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/05/2023 09:03

The nursery don't know how this happened

So was the child alone ?

No cameras in the rooms ? That's rare for nurseries

Blomonje · 21/05/2023 11:14

That’s a bad injury and will result in permanent scarring. I would have removed my child too.

jannier · 21/05/2023 11:12

He did say she is a very clumsy child maybe that's what needs looking at...
Looks like she tripped and banged the edge of a chair or a toy

Sunnylassie · 20/05/2023 20:12

And just to mention, my daughter gashed her eye at preschool as she tripped and fell Ono a child’s chair. It just happened and was no one’s faukt 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sunnylassie · 20/05/2023 20:10

Accidents happen though, especially with ones so young. The nursery say they aren’t sure on what happened but that doesn’t mean there was inadequate supervision. The staff may have been turned away from the little girl whilst helping another child. I know with my own children, an accident has happened and I’m not quite sure what because I didn’t witness it. I had to go on what my kids could tell me. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t with them or supervising, more that I wasn’t looking in their direction at that moment in time. My daughter was a nightmare as she was, and still is, so clumsy.

Children suffer injuries when at nursery or preschool just as they would at home. Just because they are under someone else’s care doesn’t mean they suddenly develop a magic bubble that protects them. With the best will in he world, these things can’t always be avoided.

Ran to the papers? Pathetic.

Or the papers picked it up from Facebook or Twitter or ?

Newnamenewname109870 · 20/05/2023 17:48

I haven’t read the article but that picture scared the bajeezes out of me. Nursery should be much much safer than how you are with your own kid. No way should that happen.

itsrainin · 20/05/2023 17:47

It looks like a bruise on her forehead, cuts in the hairline, gash above eye. if the nursery had a reasonable explanation eg she fell over, than fair enough. But the nursery here has no idea how that happened- so how long was she left unattended for? The parents aren’t unreasonable. Tbh I’m not sure what could have caused that ASIDE from negligence as the placement of the injuries is hardly akin to a knee graze.

Qilin · 20/05/2023 17:28

CabernetSauvignon · 20/05/2023 15:37

That's a nasty injury, and it's pretty worrying that the nursery seems to have no idea how the child got it. It suggests inadequate supervision.

With the best will in the world you can't see every child every second of each day.
We can't as parents, let alone in a childcare setting where one member of staff will be responsible for more than 2 or 3 children.

Accidents happen in seconds.

Wrongsideofpennines · 20/05/2023 17:27

My child sustained a laceration to her head at childcare. I had to take them to A&E and have it glued. They were covered in blood and it looked horrendous and has scarred.
Was I upset? Yes. Was sitting in A&E for hours into the evening awful? Yes. Was it the childcare settings fault? No. They tripped and fell just like they could have done at home/grandparents/with friends etc. Unless there is anything to show from the investigation about neglect it seems premature to tell the papers about it.

pictoosh · 20/05/2023 17:23

It is pathetic. It's about him, not the kid, who is bloody fine.

Towelie · 20/05/2023 17:22

ReleasetheCrackHen · 20/05/2023 17:21

I would have pulled my child from that nursery too. I don’t see what the parents have done wrong?

Ran to the papers? Pathetic.

pictoosh · 20/05/2023 17:21

You can tell by his heartstring-tugging photography complete with tears.
It's a small cut where people often bang their brow.

pictoosh · 20/05/2023 17:18

Looks like a simple, common accident, with the dad being a self-important, audience-seeking, trouble-making twatbag.

marshmallowmatcha · 20/05/2023 17:10

Impossible to say how I feel without hearing the outcome of the nurseries investigation.

Hugasauras · 20/05/2023 17:02

But children fall over, and some are 'clumsier' than others. Was there a suggestion that the previous incident was because another child had hurt her or something? You can't stop a 3yo falling over. You can try to make the environment as safe as possible, but other than turning nursery into a soft play with padded walls, and not letting them do any of the important risk-taking play in the garden area etc, that's just part of it.

How bad was a previous injury that she had to take time off nursery for it?! It sounds like it was pretty bad but they don't really mention it in the article. DD1 .has had a few falls at nursery over the years, just like at home, but she's never sustained any injuries that would require her being kept off nursery. A bumped head, a bruised knee, a gash ...

'Neil admitted his daughter had been 'clumsy' in the past.' The fact he's saying this in the article suggests it might be a bit of an understatement!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/05/2023 16:29

@Badbudgeter that does change it slightly. I couldn't actually read the whole article because of pop ups
