id like dd to go to someone that can be as loving to dd as i am.so that the cm can be then next best thing to mummy, and for the cm be able to cuddle my dd to sleep if that what she needs or wants etc

are the workers in the nurserys allowed to cuddle the children, i can just have visions of the workers being told by the bosses "to stop cuddling the children and act professional" although i have no idea where i get these lkind of ideas from ive probably totally made that up

My ds loves his cuggles from nursery. I did the same as VS for the first few months and it didn't matter when i turned up he was always in someones arms. He still in now and he's been there for 21 months now

Sunshinemummy · 19/02/2008 16:41

DS, at nursery, gets lots and lots of cuddles. He is always giving cuddles out as well to the staff, other children and even other parents. It's a big cuddle-fest

mcfee · 19/02/2008 16:38

I remember my dd's first day at nursery age 9 months which she coped with a lot better than me. I was so annoyed when I picked her up because she smelt of some one else's scent / perfume but then I realised that it meant she had been cuddled in with them!

justnally · 19/02/2008 16:33

shoshe - i think he would look at me like i was a lunatic and phone for a straightjacket!

coastalmum · 19/02/2008 14:43

I work in a nursery, we love giving and receiving cuddles its the best bit of our work.

I visit the baby room during my break for extra cuddles .

VictorianSqualor · 19/02/2008 14:39

When DS was 8months old he had to go into nursery as I went back to work and he was always in someones arms when I turned up to pick him up. (I came at different times as well, so I know it wasn't 'ah bobbys mum is coming, quick pick him up )

madamez · 19/02/2008 14:30

DS gets plenty of cuddles at nursery - well slightly fewer now that he is 3 and he is less inclined for cuddles than before. I think the idea of nursery staff not being allowed to cuddle children is a bit of an urban myth: two parts peedaful-panic and two parts have-a-go-at-WOHMs (your child will be deprived of CUDDLES you heartless bitch).

Flibbertyjibbet · 19/02/2008 14:27

My two go to nursery, ds2 has always been known as a cuddly baby and I see in his notes that he likes a cuddle.
Now that he is in the tweenie room and learning to talk he walks up to staff, puts his arms up and says 'guggle'.
If the tweenie room staff are busy he just goes and puts his arms out over the picket fence into the baby room, makes the same request, and they lift him over for a cuddle. Awwwwwww.
DS1 only comes for a cuddle if he's not feeling well

shoshe · 19/02/2008 14:24

Justnally why not

(I used to threaten to cuddle my 10 year old boy mindee, God could he run)

Bewilderbeast · 19/02/2008 14:09

my son gets loads of cuddles at nursery, he loves his key workers and they him they are always affectionate and he never wants to leave them to come home.

justnally · 19/02/2008 14:07

little ones are so cute. how could anyone not cuddle them? i wouldn't cuddle my 11 yr old mindee though

GColdtimer · 19/02/2008 14:05

When I was looking for a nursery, one of my friend's said to me "oohh, you need a childminder, they are not allowed to cuddle them at nursery" - I wonder if you have the same friend

DD has lots of cuddles at nursery and whenever I pick her up, there is always some baby or toddler getting a cuddle from the staff. I asked them about it when I looked round, in fact it was one of the most important thing to me. You will get a sense of the type of environment it is when you look around - and don't be afraid to ask.

alibubbles · 19/02/2008 13:57

I only take a new baby on if I know that I am going to have lots and lots of time to be able to cuddle all day if needed.

I have just cuddled a 14 month old to sleep and put her on the sofa, she twiddles my hair while going off to sleep and I love it!

It is the best part of the job, little hands round your neck and snotty kisses!

dylsmum1998 · 18/02/2008 21:19

whether at a cm or nursery your child should be able to have cuddles if they want them- it is in the birth to 3 matters framework that they are important for children especially babies.
as a childminder and a mum that was best part of the job when they come up for a cuddle. also best way of helping a fractious child to settle in!

MrsMattie · 18/02/2008 16:25

One of the things I loved about my son's old nursery was that whenever I arrived unexpectedly - a bit early or whatever - he was always on someone's knee or in someone's arms being cuddled and cooed at. i've been to some nurseries where the babies seem to be left idling on a playmat for long periods of time, which is upsetting.

mamadoc · 18/02/2008 16:23

My DD is used to a lot of cuddling and carrying and I was worried whether anyone else would do that for her but my childminder didn't mind at all and when I go to pick her up she is usually sitting on someone's knee. She gets rocked to sleep for her naps too and they have never complained about doing this.

southernbelle77 · 18/02/2008 16:14

I love giving my mindees cuddles! One of them literally jumps on my lap for cuddles all the time!! It is a lovely part of the job and makes you know that they feel really at home.
When dd went to nursery they were allowed to give cuddles, but they never gave her that many.

looneytune · 18/02/2008 14:54

Haven't read the whole thread but I'm a CM and cuddles is my favourite thing . I can't imagine NOT cuddling tbh, would feel rather odd. I've had babies start from 5 weeks old and they get cuddles, kisses on head, strokes on face etc etc, I'd never think of not doing this, it's just the natural thing to do

RubySlippers · 18/02/2008 14:02

plenty of cuddles and kisses at DS's nursery

in fact, it is unusual if i collect him and he isn't being cuddled or sitting on someone's knee

blueshoes · 18/02/2008 14:01

Oh god, my dcs get so many cuddles at nursery, from all the carers in the room, young or old.

If there was one reason I CHOSE the nursery, it was simply because they were free with cuddles, which my children love and need at the age they were going in (one year old). I chose cuddles and physical affection over everything else.

With ds, he was tricky to get to sleep. One carer would rock him in her arms, and HOLD HIM throughout his nap, which could go on for an hour or more. They did slowly try to ease him down onto a cushion, which he eventually allowed after a few months. Now he just sleeps in in a cot with patting and shushing.

One day, one of the ladies was telling me happily how ds would go to each carer in turn and stretch out his hands to ask for cuddles.

TigerFeet · 18/02/2008 13:59

dd has been at nursery since she was 6mo

She has had no end of cuddles on a daily basis and at 3.7 still gets plenty. I fear for her reception teacher tbh as she will still be demanding cuddles and expecting to get them when she goes to school

Cuddles are a most important part of a child's day aren't they? It was made very clear to me that they were very much encouraged amongst nursery staff when I first looked round. Whenever she has moved up a room all the carers say they will miss her cuddles. Some of her carers from the baby room still seek her out for them

bossybritches · 18/02/2008 13:53

Yep- loads of cuddles at our nursery,I always warn the parents when they look round, we are NOT PC we cuddle the children, sing "Ba Ba Black Sheep" and occasionally have chocolate or sweets as a treat.

How OFSTED have let us stay open I shall never know

fedupwasherwoman · 18/02/2008 13:48

Just a personal experience anecdote to add really but I've found that the older nursery staff, those who've already had their own kids, are more likely to be cuddle givers.

Seriously, they seem or understand from their own experience or know more about the huge importance of a simple cuddle to a baby or toddler, or even a pre-school child.

My oldest ds is at school but if he's with me when we pick up the youngest ds he still enjoys a hug with a couple of the ladies in the pre-school part of the nursery. Apparently at school the teachers don't cuddle but can clasp upset children to their side in a sort of sideways hug if necessary.

I loooove cuddles, its possibly the best bit of being a parent.

FairyMum · 18/02/2008 13:28

My children were cuddled in nursery. Of course nursery workers are allowed to cuddle children. Why would other restrictions apply than for CM's? My ds1 was used to being cuddled to sleep and nursery did this in the beginning and then eased him into a routine of not needing cuddles to sleep which worked fine.

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 13:25

Oh god, its the BEST bit of my job! I love it when they just wake up and they're all snuggly and warm and just want to sit and squidge for a bit! Am CM btw, not nursery worker!
