I am can't help feeling slightly gutted that I didn't even get a card. I think it's worse that some years I have been given gifts, some years nothing. It makes me feel like it's performance related or something. Maybe I was shit this year😁

I had a similar thing happen last year, have always had really (overly) generous employers until last year when I got absolutely nothing from my new ish family. I arrived at their door with a bottle of wine for the parents, toys for the kids and a card, they didn’t even seem embarrassed that they hadn’t gotten me anything. I don’t think it’s anything to do with performance though, some people are just lazy or not very thoughtful. This family loved me and sang my praises. They also got me nothing when they moved away in the summer, again I got the kids going away gifts but got nothing in return. I think it is rude tbh but then again I’ve also worked for awful employers and spoilt kids who were generous with gifts but I dreaded my job everyday.

Excited101 · 04/02/2021 11:18

That’s awful op! Even at their least generous I’ve had better presents from bosses than that! This year was the best- I had a weeks salary, bottle of champagne, and a few other bits as well as homemade cards etc.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2021 13:08

@Happyhappyday

We always do 1-2 weeks salary + really nice bottle of fizz. Likewise for the cleaner do half months rate + fizz/nice lotion etc. also furloughed cleaner on regular rate. We’ve depressingly benefitted substantially from the pandemic and it feels unreasonable not to maintain our commitments to people who make our lives easier.
You sound lovely

Out of curiosity when have you benefitted substantially

MessAllOver · 22/01/2021 05:07

Really poor on their part. Why would you not give a gift to someone who is so important to your children?

@eurochick I would be over-the-moon if my employers did that!
I felt quite sad about my lack of appreciation to start with and like I had done something wrong, but now I'm over it.
There is no way to fathom why people behave the way they do and I will try not to take it to heart.

We always do a week's salary and a modest gift - a bottle of fizz or something we think she would use. Ours has been a huge help through the home schooling shit show of 2020 and we wanted to show our appreciation.

Darklylookingdeeply · 07/01/2021 22:52

God, I think I've been working for the wrong people! You are all so generous! I did have one job where the gifts were amazing. They were bloody awful though! I have never felt more like 'staff' anywhere I've worked, if you know what I mean.
@NannyR I have had this too. 'Shit, give her that bottle of wine!' because they clearly forgot. To invite you to a 'present exchange' and still not think to buy anything is exceptional though!

How thoughtless of them. I've never had a nanny but always gave my Childminder nice gifts.

Atalune · 07/01/2021 22:25

I have “furloughed” my cleaner on full pay this last year, she popped over near Christmas to drop the kids a gift, and we gave her a nice scarf and put £200 in the bank for her.

caringcarer · 07/01/2021 22:19

@Darklylookingdeeply, the French house is empty a lot of the time. I let All of my family and friends and cleaner who only has adult children and do often goes at end of June or beginning of July. I don't let it out do it would be just sitting there empty. It doesn't cost me anything to share.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 07/01/2021 21:37

Ah, thanks for the update, @Darklylookingdeeply .

They do sound thoughtless: it's really important to show people they they're valued, and even more so when you are operating as part of daily family life.

I'd be feeling unappreciated in your shoes.

NannyR · 07/01/2021 21:32

I got a nice coffee mug and a couple of books about things that really interest me - nothing mega expensive, but the fact that they'd thought about what I would like meant a lot.
I've never had a big cash present or Christmas bonus in any of the jobs I've had.

The worst present I had was one Christmas, the family were going away for Christmas so the parents were giving the children their presents beforehand and they asked if I would like to stay for a drink and "exchange presents", I gave the children presents from me and the mum and dad sort of looked at each other as if to say 'were we supposed to buy a present for her?' then they handed me a box of chocolates from the sideboard, no wrapping paper, no card. They were actually quite nice chocolates but it was the idea that I wasn't appreciated enough to have had a gift bought or even a hand made card from the kids.
Money wasn't an issue - there were lots of expensive, beautifully wrapped gifts under the tree for family and friends.

Darklylookingdeeply · 07/01/2021 21:13

@Blondeshavemorefun No, not a thing. @caringcarer Wow! You sound lovely and very generous!
@june2007 I don't expect 'stuff'. I'm talking about a card or a drawing from the kids. Nannying is a very personal job. I have worked in nurseries and there isn't a comparison.
@MyGazeboisLeaking thank you for asking. I am OK, but was pissed off that there was no thank you for my gifts either. I have let it go though. Life is too short to get bitter about it. I think they are just a bit thoughtless and forgetful.

Hi OP,

Just saw this is my 'I'm on' threads and wondered how you're getting on?

Imissmoominmama · 04/01/2021 13:35

@caringcarer- do you need another cleaner? Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/01/2021 13:31

Nursery is very diff from working for one family and 1-2-3 same children day in and out

june2007 · 03/01/2021 23:42

Yes it,s nice to get stuff. But to expect stuff I think is wrong I mean it,s not like your their for free. i work in a nursery some parents give stuff some don,t I don,t jusdge those that donb,t. Were not doing them a favour were paid to do a job.

caringcarer · 03/01/2021 23:37

I don't.have a nanny but I have a very good and loyal cleaner who I appreciate very much. We gave her a week in our holiday home in France of her choosing and as it has 7 bedrooms she can take her whole family. A gift voucher for a local restaurant I know she likes for her and her DH and a good bottle of wine from our son who does not keep his bedroom very tidy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2021 23:00

@Darklylookingdeeply. That’s crap. 5yrs

If back tomorow I hope they have got you something

Darklylookingdeeply · 03/01/2021 22:45

@Blondeshavemorefun I've been there 5 years. I have never had another family do that. Nevermind, I am over it. Maybe I'll get something next Christmas if I can hang on that long😁

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2021 09:59

Bless the kids

How long had you been there .

I’m a mn now but as a nanny fir 20yrs I always got a cash bonus of weeks wages plus small pressie chosen by kids

As a mn past ten years always had a small pressie minus one family at Xmas

My clients where I’ve been for 6w were lovely to me. Cash bonus - never had that as a mn

Plus candle chocolates smellies and they also included a pressie for my almost 4yr

No one had ever done that before

Sorry yours were crap

A card is a must but nice to give the person looking after your most precious a gift is nice

Darklylookingdeeply · 29/12/2020 19:44

Thank you all. It's interesting to hear all your perspectives. Seems like I'm not unreasonable to be feeling a bit put out.
@SandysMam I am making plans to leave eventually, not because of this, but because of several other things that I can't seem to resolve with them. It' s a shame really.

OP posts:
SandysMam · 29/12/2020 13:15

I would be looking for another job OP, it is rude and disrespectful, a cash bonus or a lovely box of chocolates or smellies would require very little effort from them. Even a card telling you how much you are appreciated would be better than nothing!! Nannies are in demand, don’t settle for being treated badly!

Stinkyjellycat · 29/12/2020 13:08

It’s appalling OP! I gave my cleaner and my child’s nursery key worker gifts (cash and vouchers respectively). I appreciate and value their work and know they make my life much easier and it’s important to show them that.
