Coronavirus- can nanny still work?

Hi, hope I’m not duplicating a thread but I couldn’t find one.

I have a lovely nanny who comes 2 days a week. Where do we stand regarding isolation etc? Can she refuse to come to work when we’re all well? At what point would she be able to not come to work, e.g. what level of official lockdown etc.

Want to be totally fair to her and follow the rules, but equally if I don’t have childcare I can’t work and earn money to pay her. Thanks, it’s so difficult to navigate

@Mildred01 if you don’t want to work then fine, just surely don’t expect to be paid?!

Bringonspring · 14/05/2020 22:55

Yes it would be unfair for you to not to return to your job, unless you are in a high risk category.

Our nanny returned a few weeks ago and everything is going well, she doesn’t take public transport and both our families are otherwise self-isolating and limiting shopping trips etc. I’m not sure how we would have managed without her as I’m extremely busy at work pulling long, very busy days with lots of conference calls. DP also busy and has a lot of calls. I’m very grateful to her. I also think it would seriously have affected our relationship if she hadn’t returned as it would have caused so much hardship for us and it is so low risk for her to work.

I am a nanny to a 5 and 8yr old. I haven’t gone back yet. They haven’t mentioned it BUT I am doing school work over Skype with the kids every day which is working well. Personally I feel very strongly that if I am still not allowed to see my family then I shouldn’t be going to work

nannynick · 14/05/2020 20:51

I went back to a nanny role where parents are non-keyworker's in week commencing 4th May following the FAQ that GovUk published. GovUk have since removed mention of nannies from that FAQ.

So now are referring to Annex A in the Our Plan To Rebuild document that was published 11th May.

Are you able to travel safely to/from your employer's home?

Mildred01 · 14/05/2020 20:41

Hi, I hope this is appropriate to post here but have any nannies returned to work yet? My employer is ready for me to go back as she’s desperate but I still don’t feel comfortable. Would it be unfair of me to say this?

@Pidgythe2nd why has it made you reassess things? You have to feel full trust with your nanny..

2kool4skool · 02/05/2020 17:40

@Pidgythe2nd it’s a very fragile relationship and any bad feeling or resentment makes it unworkable in my view. Very difficult.

Pidgythe2nd · 02/05/2020 16:25

No, haven’t let her go, but if she didn’t agree to return this week we would have had to.
We’ve furloughed her (and topped up) but cannot continue to struggle through each working day as we have been. We would have looked for either a temporary nanny or a new permanent one.
Honestly though, I’m not sure how I feel about her now. It’s made me reassess a few things.

2kool4skool · 28/04/2020 21:31

Has anyone decided to let theirs go?

Hugglespuffed · 27/04/2020 23:28

Fantastic news that nanny employers have started receiving their furlough money today.

Childcarehelp · 20/04/2020 22:57

*needing not beefing!

Thanks @Childcarehelp that’s great! Phew

Childcarehelp · 20/04/2020 09:59

The tax treatment language is still there, see here: www.gov.uk/guidance/work-out-80-of-your-employees-wages-to-claim-through-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme @2kool4skool

Childcarehelp · 20/04/2020 09:56

We did furlough but nanny now returning to work as it’s been really hard for us and quite unhealthy for kids (beefing to use tv as childcare etc). The risks are very minimal, especially now after a few weeks of strict lockdown which our family and hers have been following. She only works for us and will travel back and forth by car.

2kool4skool · 20/04/2020 09:54

Looks like they took the tax part off the website. I hope that’s not a sign they’ve changed their minds

Hugglespuffed · 20/04/2020 08:29

pidgy sorry it won't let me tag you.
Does your nanny only work for you?
I've continued to work for at least one family (I'm leaving it up to the families) and another will restart up this week. I think now that lockdown has been for 4 weeks, hopefully your nanny may feel the risks are minimal now? As you've all been pretty much inside for a while.

Pidgythe2nd · 20/04/2020 07:55

I’m happy with all the clarifications (we won’t have to pay tax on the grant and despite the role not being redundant we can claim) as had decided to risk it and furlough our nanny. We would have taken the hit if we couldn’t claim.

But, if we employ a temporary nanny we will stop furlough.
Wish my employer would furlough me!! Looks like they could under ‘child care’ needs.
If I ask, that’s probably the nail in the coffin for my career there though! Confused
