Hello,

I am looking for a nanny to help care for my boy. I interviewed a lovely nanny two weeks ago, who in considering giving the job too. But I don't know... when I look at her... I'm worried she takes drugs.

Should I ask for a background check. She does not have an enhanced DBS and I told her that I will need a clear DBS before she can work with my son. Is there anything else I need to check ?

I thought I'd give an update since I keep receiving email notifications that someone has replied on this thread.

Long story short. We decided to hire the nanny Smile. We did a very long trial, while we were waiting for references and paperwork. All came back fine and she is fantastic ! We did a thoroughNo concerns about drugs whatsoever (I admit I was being judgmental and super paranoid).

Shosa1 We've had about three nanny's but to be fair, we were using a company that hired out nannies to parents on an Adhoc basis. Most of the nannies we had were students and all were in their final years of study, so it wasn't going to be long term anyway. This worked out ok as we were finding it difficult to find nannies for after school care but I didn't like the changing of nannies towards the end... so I decided to write a personal ad to find someone long term...

This thread is from February, hopefully it’s all sorted now.

Hollyhobbi · 07/04/2020 12:01

Should you be meeting up with all these potential nannies with Covid 19 restrictions anyway?

ritishkhanna · 07/04/2020 11:23

testing

penisbeakers · 07/04/2020 07:58

Wow. So she has skin you don't approve of and you think she's on drugs?

Are YOU on drugs?

Binterested · 07/04/2020 07:50

For whatever reason your gut says no. So say no.

Shosha1 · 07/04/2020 07:46

How many nannies have you had? Are they all for the one child?
I would be more concerned that you cant keep a nanny.

ritishkhanna · 07/04/2020 07:16

caretaker nanny

CannotGoOn · 22/03/2020 00:39

I'm a nanny (I'm off sick currently)

Any family I've worked for have always asked to see my qualifications, my dbs check and also checked up on my references.
I know that my previous employment would have me back in a heart beat - they said they just knew I was the one for them when they met me.
Aside from what you think about her looks; you are clearly uneasy in your gut which is never a good thing when leaving your child with someone who is essentially a stranger in your home.
Continue looking around or you will never feel confident with your nanny

Excited101 · 22/03/2020 00:24

I’ve got bad skin too, and very blue under my eyes. I do what I can with make up but some days it’s still bad- especially later on in the day. I’ve never done any drugs though, not even smoked a cigarette!

underneaththeash · 09/02/2020 08:46

Well you can't hire her until she has an enhanced DBS anyway and that can take weeks.

Sometimes you have to go by gut instinct and there is clearly something you're uneasy about with her.

I would look around for someone else.

Iloveicedtea · 07/02/2020 15:48

Oh I don't know now. A few parents on the school run were asking me questions about her and was making sure that I got the right person. She does look a bit punk-ish but that doesn't bother me.

I don't knooooow Sad

what a weird thread , you think she nay be on drugs as pale and hubby looks old, which is now is

get a dbs

trust your gut insticts

and yes refs would help

why does she want a nanny career/chnage careers?

SwishSwishSheesh · 07/02/2020 10:41

@turnandfacethenamechange I know, me too! The OP comes across as a sort of person who'd think tattoos = drug user Grin

bobstersmum · 06/02/2020 19:52

You need to not be judging people by the way they look op. She's just proved why.

HollowTalk · 06/02/2020 19:36

You need good references, that's what you need!

Iloveicedtea · 06/02/2020 19:25

Ok, so I met with the nanny today (as she is currently on a trial) before I offer her a role or not. I think I've been judgmental. When we were alone, she was showing me pictures of her husband, again, and she said he was in his 50's ! No wonder ! So he looks quite old in the pictures. She was telling me about her life and said she suffers from a skin condition and finds it hard to put on weight (she is very skinny)..... I think I need a slap on the face.

Lightsabre · 06/02/2020 14:58

Trust your instincts. I wouldn't hire her.

turnandfacethenamechange · 06/02/2020 14:52

Do you even know much about drugs or what different drug users look like? Why do you think her husband is a druggie? Does he have tattoos or something?

This thread is making me howl.

turnandfacethenamechange · 06/02/2020 14:51

You sound insane 🤣

dellacucina · 06/02/2020 14:50

If you have a bad feeling, don't hire her to look after your child.

Blazerdilema · 06/02/2020 14:45

They have a company policy to not provide specific references and say (if an old manager at her work place were to provide a reference) he would breaking their company policy.

We also say that. We can hardly say we're only doing it in that instance. The reality is we ignore that for good people as we want to give tv em glowing references.

squizzles · 06/02/2020 14:19

She might be unwell

Wouldn't you want a fit and healthy person looking after your child?

squizzles · 06/02/2020 14:18

Just go with someone else. You have a bad feeling about her, that's a valid reason not to hire her.
