nanny/maid not treated right

Hi i am not really sure what i am after by posting here but i think i just need to vent. i work as a holiday nanny so i either go on holiday with a family to look after the children or i look after children that come on holiday to london.

The family that i have just started working for also have a maid/ nanny.
The maid has 5 child back in her home country and she was purchased by the family so she is not employed. She told me she is not paid at all and is on call 24/7 even has the youngest children sleep in her bed plus she has to keep the house tidy. I feel really bad for her :/ I have been working with her for a little while and she gets really happy if i do small things such as buy her a drink/ some lunch. She says that i am the kindest person she has ever met. Even the children treat her like dirt. (i am trying to fix that while i am with them) I really don't know what to do or even if there is anything i can do. just wanted to let it out and see if anyone had any ideas

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

If you got this postion through an agency make sure that they will not place other nannies with the family again.

I've worked for many Middle eastern families that do pay their maids so hopefully people don't think all ME families treat their staff like crap.

Also make sure you are fully packed and can leave quickly. Maybe have someone you can check in with or a secret word if you are in danger.

NotKissingTipsy · 18/07/2015 16:04

Did you manage to get her there OP?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/07/2015 15:46

Sorry, "for a year"

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/07/2015 15:46

You have given her enough money to set her up at home for life?

I do hope she (and you) are genuine.

SleepShake · 18/07/2015 15:42

OP, as long as this is what the maid wants and you haven't pushed her in to, what you are doing is amazing.

Why did they employ you though? Surely if she looks after all the kids in Saudi, they don't need your help in London?

Penfold007 · 18/07/2015 15:33

Good luck Nannyuk hope your friend gets the help she needs.

lilacblossomtime · 18/07/2015 13:08

I am glad you are doing this but please be careful.

Good God. Is there anything we can do to support you OP?

MarinaCoyle · 18/07/2015 12:56

Nannyuk you are absolutely right to help her. And so incredibly generous to help fund her return home. This is so horrendous. Please, please take care.

trufflehunterthebadger · 18/07/2015 12:52

Well done OP. Make sure you protect yourself as well, can't imagine this will end well for the family so take care

answersonapostcardplease · 18/07/2015 12:49

Christ almighty. You must help her.

cashewnutty · 18/07/2015 12:45

Lolimax · 18/07/2015 12:43

I think what you're doing is amazing. Good luck and I'm thinking of you both. Please let us know how you get on?

sj73 · 18/07/2015 12:37

Wow nanny. That's horrific. You really are brilliant. Wishing you all lots of luck. I'm in London and if I can help in anyway please pm me.

OTheHugeManatee · 18/07/2015 12:03

Hope you can get this poor woman some help.

Lots of Saudi Arabia basically runs on slavery. It's disgusting.

Tummyrumbled · 18/07/2015 11:58

There is a big Filipino gathering happening this weekend.

If you are both going to go ahead this plan- now is the best time.

Goodluck, OP. My eyes are welling up because of your courage and conviction. UnMumsnet hug

TattieHowkerz · 18/07/2015 11:40

larant · 18/07/2015 11:27

And afterwards, please do make an official complaint about the initial police response.

TattieHowkerz · 18/07/2015 11:22

The embassy is closed at weekends. Maybe phone ahead? Or call one of the helplines? Good for you, great that you are helping her and have a plan.

nannyuk · 18/07/2015 11:19

She wants to go home to her family. i Will be alone with her and the children in about half hour so i will go straight to the embassy I have taken enough money out of the bank to set her up in her home country for about a year so i hope that is enough and she gets home
