Hey folks, long time since I was last here but I was rather hoping you brilliant people could help me out as Ofsted as ever, are useless don't seem sure.

I am a childminder, working alongside another childminder and have been for 3 years nearly. We employ an assitant and have 1 day off each week alternatively. So well clued up on running a business and employing 1 person.

We have been totally full for the last 3 years and each year we have more people that we have to turn away. I was thinking about setting up as a nursery but wanted to do some research, mainy on costs and also about who can actually run a nursery. I quite like the idea of having a manager to do it so I can still play, not sure how feasible that is.

Anyway, any advice would be brilliant; the main things I am struggling with are:

Costs involved with Ofsted
Costs involved in running a business from a home that isn't your own, like are there council bax discounts or similar
Are ratios different?

Anything else really you want to add, I would love to hear. Hope you're all good x

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Qualification wise NVQ3 is acceptable for supervisor. If you have a qualified teacher during 8am and 4pm your ratio is different. Sorry popping off again but feel free to message me for any further info.

Brilliant, thank you everyone.

BALd - I know, long time no speak, I just don't have the time sadly! How you keeping my lovely?

LM thanks for all the brilliant links, I will have a good read. Sadly nearly everything I have read so far which ok, was only 2 things before I asked here! was out of date and the stuff Ofsted sent me was broken links!

nbee84, I know it goes quick doesn't it! I've technically only been doing it from my house for about 2 years 2 months, and that is when I was on here the most, so it's not quite 3 years yet Wink

Katy you're a star, no rush at all, I will see you on Sat x

Nick - brilliant as ever!

Thankyou everyone, no doubt I will be back over the next couple of days, might reignite my addiction!

Business Rates are a big cost to take into account.

A friend of mine who has changed from being a childminder to being a nursery has had hassle with regard to policies & procedures. Can't just use the childminder ones, need to spend a lot of time rewriting the lot. Though maybe it was just that the Ofsted inspector had a bad day!

Staff ratios - you need to get that right and it can be tricky especially if you are having a mix of ages in the same room.
