I'd be really interested to know, to see if my childminder is as competitively priced as I think she is.....

£5.50 per hour for a childminder - 8.45am - 5.45pm for DS2
£7.50 per hour for an after school childminder 3 - 6pm for DS1

I'm still not quite sure why my after school childminder gets to charge more though. Meals are included with for with both.

I live in London.

childminder we pay £3.50 an hr and he does a 9hr day and that includes all meals - he is there breakfast and lunch however i provide lunch and his dinner as he is just 10mths and still has mashed food and his dinner at 3.30pm and she does sandwiches/pasta etc for lunch and he has few bits of these as well for finger foods.

Nursery (which he will start sept) is £45 a day although he will only go 9hr its open 7.30-6 and thats what you pay for.

Here nurseries were from £30-£50 a day for 7.30/8-6pm and

childminders £2.50-£4.50 an hr and some provided food and others didnt

£35 a day for our excellent CM in Eastbourne.

Our London CM was £70 a day however.
We could afford because we qualified for tax credits. She was brilliant and had an outstanding Ofsted rating.

FloweryBoots · 28/06/2011 18:24

DS is starting at a CM in a few weeks. £55 a day 8am - 6pm (and even though I'll be picking him up at 5pm we pay the full day fee). Less then full days she charges £6 per hour. We have to pay when she is on holiday too, and up to 5 days a year if she is ill, and bank holidays even though she is shut. But at least it is only a couple of minutes round the corner, and she seems great. And it's average round here (North London). Still going to be worse off back at work then I was on maternity pay!

ohanotherone · 28/06/2011 18:07

£24 per day, Childminder 7.30-6.30pm although does not usually stay that long. Meals included.

£5 drop off before school or £5 pick up after school, breakfast and tea included if DS is hungry (he usually insists on breakfast before going).

Live in rural area though, not in south east.

Curlyfrizzball · 28/06/2011 17:56

Our childminder charges £4 per hour (south east). This is about average here for a childminder - nursery is more. Friends about 10-15 miles away pay £6 for a childminder though - very much depends on your area.

Don't know we would afford more than one child - wouldn't be financially worth working then, but we also can't pay the bills on just one salary.

Having said that, our childminder is brilliant and worth a lot more than what we pay!

BootyMum · 27/06/2011 13:35

We have just arranged CM for DS1 & 2. She charges £40 per child per day [0730 - 6pm]. So when I back to work for 2 days a week it will cost me £160.

We are in Sth East London. I believe the local nurseries are all around £50 - £60 per day.

bibbitybobbityhat · 27/06/2011 13:29

Yabu.

slipperandpjsmum · 27/06/2011 13:23

£50 net per day for someone to come to our home. We provide food for ds and for the person who cares for him and anything they do in the day together.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/06/2011 11:30

The only reason I manage is that my mother and MIL have DD one day a week each so she's only in nursery for 1 day a week. My dad worked out that, after childcare, travel etc I commute 2.5 hours per day into London for £3000 pa.

And there's no long game here unfortunately, she starts school in Sept '12 and I'll have to give it up. It's madness!

pantsandpup · 27/06/2011 11:29

I'm in Hampshire and my wonderful childminder is one of the cheapest in the area at £3.00 an hour. I work two p/t days and 2 f/t, and my parents have dd one afternoon a week. I pay £20.00 a week during term time and £80.00 a week during holidays.

Becaroooo · 27/06/2011 11:26

Oh lula how difficult for you.

Some of my female friends have - maybe - £40 a month left from their salary after childcare costs...and these women are working F/T!

Must be soul destroying Sad

London suburbs, £4.50 per hour for our CM not including food/nappies - have 2 DCs so £9 per hour. We pay £2 per meal per child. This is pretty standard where we are, some charge £5 per hr inc meals. My CM is wonderful and does loads of craft/baking/activities with them. Any additional outings we pay for but she always checks that we are happy with them first.

This is still cheaper than a nanny (which we had previously). Although she was cheaper per hour at £8 net, once you add on tax/NI/expenses she worked out a lot more expensive.

Becaroooo · 27/06/2011 11:16

£60 per day????

God, how do parents who work outside the home manage????

Becaroooo · 27/06/2011 11:14

Ds2 starts pre school in sept and its £8.50 per session...i.e. £17 for a full day (meals not included).

He is ony doing 2 mornings to start with then building up to 5 by the time he starts reception.

(I am in derbyshire)

TheThingUpstairs · 27/06/2011 11:11

£35 for a day at nursery, this includes snacks but not lunch. Childminders here vary from about £3-5 (in Yorkshire).

VeronicaCake · 27/06/2011 11:07

£2.80 per hour for our childminder in the East Midlands. We pay £28 for a ten hour day though usually pick up early so she is only there 9hrs. And £1.50 a day for food.

It is ludicrously cheap IMO but she wouldn't accept more, and she does have four children there so she earns £11.20 an hour.

Nursery would have cost £35 a day inc meals.

Surrey btw

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/06/2011 11:03

£60 per day for nursery (before free funding kicked in). That's for 9am - 5.30pm

MrsKravitz · 27/06/2011 11:03

Sorry, north west.
